Letter from the Executive Director
| Dear Friends, I love the springtime, except for...Achoo! ...the pollen! Allergies may seem like a fact of life, but I've learned some interesting things about them that have given me both hope and relief. There is a difference between "true allergies" and "sensitivities" to environmental factors. Your doctor can give you skin or blood tests to determine what are true allergies, if that is important to you. However, both can lead to the reaction of your immune system to a perceived "intruder" - and set off biochemical reactions that lead to the sneezing, congestion, watery eyes, itchy throat and other symptoms of the season. My own experience is that when environmental allergens are at their height, it pays to soothe my immune system as much as possible, to reduce my reactivity, and reduce my need for allergy medications that can make me drowsy or jittery. A Client's Story
|
Terry (not her real name) was working out three times a week at the gym, giving her grandchildren piggy back rides, and wasn't taking any prescription medications despite being just a year away from her 70th birthday when, suddenly, her health "caved in". Increasing pain, loss of mobility, difficulty walking, and numbness in her left hand drastically affected her daily routine as well as her mental and emotional state. "Everything was a thought process: what can I carry home from the grocery store? Can I open this jar? Tie my shoes? Should I try to do laundry? Even my involvement with my grandchildren was put on hold." Terry's primary care physician diagnosed arthritis and stenosis of the spine. He prescribed pain medications and physical therapy, but the next PT appointment wouldn't be available for 6-8 weeks. Her doctor increased her pain medications, but Terry wasn't getting relief, so she contacted her insurance care manager, who recommended acupuncture. Her doctor recommended Pathways to Wellness. Ask the Acupuncturists
|
Q. Can you give me some advice for dealing with springtime allergies, especially for dealing with sneezing and watery eyes?
A. Although Shakespeare stated that "April hath put a spirit of youth in everything", people with allergies can have a hard time appreciating the beauty of the season! In order to keep these symptoms under control, consider nutrition, self-care, and acupuncture.
Vitamin C, contained in green and red peppers, strawberries, kiwi, oranges, potatoes, and cabbage, is a natural antihistamine. Ginger is also a natural antihistamine; you can add it to your stir-fries or make ginger tea.

The Season's Recipe for Wellness | |
Farmer's Market Pasta
Substitute any combination of fresh market vegetables in this versatile dish!

4 cloves fresh garlic, peeled and thinly sliced
1 pint grape tomatoes
1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus 2 tsp.
1/2 tsp. Kosher salt plus 1 tbsp.
1/4 tsp. freshly ground pepper
1 1/2 cups whole wheat penne pasta
Up to 1 tsp. sugar (optional)
1/2 lb. hot Italian turkey sausage links (can be omitted if you prefer a vegetarian meal)
1 medium-sized zucchini, sliced lengthwise and then cut into half moons
1 bunch asparagus, trimmed and cut into 1-2" pieces
4 artichokes, trimmed to the hearts, cut into quarters* (or one box frozen artichokes, thawed. Do not use marinated artichokes in the jar or can.)
1/3 cup freshly grated Asiago cheese
1/4 bunch fresh basil leaves, sliced thinly
1. Place the garlic and grape tomatoes in a large heavy sauté pan. Drizzle with 1/2 cup olive oil and season with 1/2 tsp. salt and 1/4 tsp. pepper. Cook slowly over low-medium heat, shaking the pan every 10 minutes, until the tomatoes are just about falling apart and their juices have been extracted forming a nice loose sauce, about 35 to 40 minutes. Set aside.

Acupressure Point of the Season
| |
Lung 5
By Edie Snow, ABT
To locate this point put your arm out with thumb side up. Draw a line on the inside arm from the thumb to the elbow crease where your fingertip will fall into the hollow.
Acupressure to this point will clear lung heat and expel phlegm from the lungs, stimulating the descending of lung Qi to help you breathe deeply.
