Fall 2010
Letter from the Executive Director

Summer acupressure point

Dear Friends,

Fall reminds me of crisp juicy apples, crunchy nuts, and comforting roasted root veggies--an abundance of good food. However, as the holidays approach, eating for health can go by the wayside. And when our food habits decline, so does our digestion.

Digestion is key to creating the energy and wellbeing that allows you to do the things that make life worthwhile--love, play, and contribute to the world. When digestion suffers, your energy to do the things you love suffers as well.

Did you know that your digestive tract is the biggest barrier between you and the outside world? It's been suggested that stretched out, it would cover the area of two tennis courts. That's big! And the job of the digestive tract is big as well--every time you eat, cells that line the mouth, all the way through the stomach and intestines are making decisions about what to allow into your body, and what to keep out.

How Your Support Helps

After coming to Pathways, at the recommendation of her physical therapist, for a shoulder injury, Ruth began receiving acupuncture treatments and Chinese herbs to help with her allergies and symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Now, Ruth no longer relies on Western medicines for relief from her allergies and no longer gets bronchitis every year. "The treatments have boosted my immune system so I hardly ever get colds anymore." And, her IBS symptoms have been alleviated to the point where she no longer has to be careful about what she eats--apples and onions are no longer a problem for her.

Ask the Acupuncturists

Q.Can acupuncture be effective for digestive problems such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

A.
Yes, acupuncture can be very helpful for many types of digestive disorders. In acupuncture theory, illness is viewed as disruption in the body's energy pathways and organs. While the Stomach is responsible for the ingestion of food, it's the Spleen that transforms it into useable nutrition. When absorption of nutrients is impaired, the health of the whole body is at risk.

Digestion becomes disturbed when the Spleen energy is compromised by weakness or obstruction. This can be caused by poor or inappropriate diet, lack of sleep, and overwork. Stress is another major factor.
