Letter from the Executive Director
| Dear Friends,
Have you ever thought, "I'd like to try acupuncture, but I don't have
anything wrong"? It occurred to me that a lot of folks think about acupuncture
the same way they think about taking a pill...it's good when you have a complaint...which
is certainly true. But acupuncture, Chinese herbs, and shiatsu are all terrific
as part of your preventive care as well. With the rising costs of health care, we've all been hearing how
important it is for us to take charge of our own health: quit smoking, exercise,
eat right, get good sleep and reduce our stress levels. Your health and
wellbeing are important to us at Pathways, and we can support you in taking
care of your whole self.

Ask the Acupuncturists
| Q. Do you have any recommendations for healthy
practices in summertime?
A.
In traditional Asian
medicine, summer is associated with the heart, which offers us the opportunity
to welcome joy and promote happiness in our lives. Although the concept of the heart encompasses more
than the actual organ, many of the recommendations suggested for the summer are
related to the effects of heat and the environment on our circulatory system.
Summer is an
excellent time to "re-charge our health batteries". Here are some suggestions
for doing this:
· Integrating
activities that make us happy - being outdoors, seeing friends, being more
active· Avoid strain
of over-doing (exercise and over-work), especially when heat and humidity are
uncomfortable |
How Your Support Helps
| Your generous
donations help clients like John (not his real name) a Vietnam vet who for many
years has suffered from the effects of Agent Orange and from post-traumatic
stress disorder (PTSD).
During
John's service in Vietnam he saw combat on a daily basis. 132 men served with
him in his unit--only 18 came back.
John began
receiving weekly free acupuncture treatments at Pathways a little over a year
ago. At that time
he was taking medications for back pain and for PTSD and was dealing with
chronic lung and breathing problems caused by exposure to Agent Orange.

Saluting the Spirit is a Big Success!

together at Exhale Spa for an amazing and inspiring day of yoga.
Together we raised over $30,000 for Pathways and yogaHOPE!
Many
thanks to our wonderful yoga instructors, participants, donors, volunteers and everyone who helped make
Saluting the Spirit a very special day.
All funds raised at Saluting the Spirit will help support Pathways' AIDS Care Project and YogaHope's yoga programs for women in substance abuse, homeless, and domestic violence shelters.

Acupressure Point of the Season
| | Acupoint Heart 7 Shenmen/Mind Door
By Edie Snow, ABT
To locate this
point run your finger over the wrist crease where the hand and arm fold. The
point is at the hollow below and between the fourth and fifth fingers. Acupressure
to this point can promote
good sleep and calm anxiety, and
help to relieve poor memory and itchy skin.
