Helium Shortage to be Addressed at the IBA State of the Industry Breakfast
IBA will host the State of the Industry Breakfast on Monday, March 17, 2008, Rm 304/305, in the Sands Expo & Convention Center, Las Vegas, NV. This meeting is designed to accommodate members of the balloon and party goods industry while attending the Halloween, Costume and Party Show, March 16-19th.
Our featured speaker, Phil Kornbluth, is acknowledged as one of the world's leading experts in the helium business. Phil is currently employed by Matheson Tri-Gas, Inc. as Executive Vice President, Global Helium, based in Basking Ridge, NJ. In this role, he has responsibility for managing the global helium business of Taiyo Nippon Sanso Corporation (TNSC), the leading Japanese industrial gas supplier and one of only six companies worldwide who controls its own helium sources. Prior to joining TNSC, Phil was employed by The BOC Group, plc for over 25 years. At BOC, Phil worked in BOC's helium business for 23 years and had management responsibility for BOC's global helium business for approximately eight years before joining Matheson Tri-Gas. BOC was the co-leader in the worldwide helium market prior to its acquisition by Linde AG in 2006. Phil has a BS in Economics from the Wharton School of the University of PA and an MBA from Rider University.
Phil's presentation will cover these questions:
- Where does helium come from?
- What caused the shortage of supply?
- What is the helium industry doing about the shortage?
- When is the helium shortage expected to end?
Phil will be on hand for Questions and Discussion following his presentation.

Where the Winners Meet: Why Happier, More Successful People Gravitate Toward Associations
A January 2008 report to the William E. Smith Institute for Association Research reveals that on average, association members are more successful than non-members. Using new national survey data, associations are found to provide a critical venue for successful people in a profession or industry to access resources, identify themselves, network with their peers, and form mutually beneficial communities. The data show that associations are where the winners meet.
