The National Helium Shortage

The US helium shortage is of critical importance to the balloon industry. The shortage in the US is due to increased demand worldwide while supply remains stagnant.  According to the Bureau of Land Management, America's largest "landlord," private sector helium exports have increased over 50 percent since 2002. Exports in 2007 are expected to approach a 12 percent increase over 2006. Worldwide demand has risen about 7 percent a year in the past three years while US reserves are depleting at a rate of 6-7 percent per year. Until the overseas helium production increases, the US will continue to experience a helium shortage.

Where does this leave the balloon industry?

  • With demand increasing and supply decreasing, everyone can expect to pay higher prices for helium.
  • Alternatives to helium (such as air-filled decor) must be cultivated in order to meet the public demand for balloons.
  • New ways to conserve helium will need to be addressed. It is in our best interest to ackowledge the need to conserve and collaborate on alternatives to using pure helium.

As an industry we must unite and let the helium suppliers hear our voice! We serve an important public service and expect to continue to receive helium!

The helium shortage is a fact we must all live with - how we deal with it now will impact our future. The IBA is actively working with US helium producers to protect our future. Please join us in this effort.
