| Greetings! |
Spring has sprung and NSC has sprung into action. We have a lot of announcements and great programming of interest. [NSC Program and Services brochure]
Thank you to everyone who has shared your success stories with us. We have been hearing from several of past program participants about the success they have had from what they have learned at NSC programs and workshops.
For example, an organization was awarded a $500,000 grant after taking NSC's Grantwriting Workshop. An executive director told us about the awards her organization earned after her board put in to practice information from a Governance Workshop. A board president thanked NSC after attending a Nonprofit President Council breakfast and having an "aha" moment on how to increase the organization's funding.
More and more we hear from our constituents throughout the State. We would love to hear from you too! Please forward your success stories to carmen@nonprofitservices.org.
Do you Twitter? Have you LinkedIn?
You can follow NSC on Twitter (#NSCCarmen), Facebook (become a fan of Nonprofit Services Center) and LinkedIn too. We love having more friends, fans and followers! |
2009 Nonprofit Summit - State Budget Crisis
|

Nonprofit Summit 2009 State Budget Crisis: IMPACT AND RESPONSE
April 20, 2009 | 8:00 AM - 10:00 AM Central Reform Congregation [map] 5020 Waterman Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63108
No cost; space is limited [register now]
NSC, in partnership with Gateway Center for Giving, are providing a public forum for nonprofits and private funders to hear
from a panel of executives from the Missouri departments of Social Services,
Health & Senior Services and Economic Development about the impetus for the
proposed budget cuts and the resulting impact on federal stimulus funds
available to the state.
The Missouri Budget Project estimates that
funding cuts proposed by the Missouri House Budget Committee will result in the
State of Missouri forfeiting $232
million in federal funds that could be used to support critical social services
at a time when more Missourians are in need and more agencies are strapped for
funds to provide services.
NSC has assembled a distinguished panel of executives:
-
Ron
Levy - Director, Department of Social Services
-
Margaret
Donnelly, Director, Department of Health & Senior Services
-
Ann
Perry - Finance Manager, Department of Economic Development
-
Patrick
Dougherty - former Missouri State Senator and current Director of Advocacy for
Catholic Charities
-
Facilitator
- Dr. James Kimmey, President and CEO, Missouri Foundation for Health
Don't miss this important discussion as we learn:
- Implication of budget changes effecting nonprofits' service delivery, what
nonprofits need to think about, and how to prepare for changes;
- How
nonprofits can best work with executive branch departments and legislators; and
- What
can and should our nonprofit community development organizations and local
organizations be doing to educate and influence their stakeholders on how these
changes will affect them?
For questions concerning the Nonprofit Summit please contact Nonprofit Services Center at 314.436.9580 or 866.433.9580. Funding was provided by Wachovia Securities.

- recognize, recruit and retain talented people
- build your leadership bench strength
- learn to encourage and empower leadership skills in others
- lead through the generational divide
and so much more
It has never been so important to shift your thinking to build a strong team.
Cost is $150 that includes all materials, meals and lodging. Registration is available online.
Questions? Please contact Dr. Theresa Mayberry, project director, Leadership Services, theresa@nonprofitservices.org.
"The Women's Academy has removed the feelings of isolation, developed lasting friendships/partnerships, and became a base for networking. These are just some of the highlights. I would not have been able to nor probably created the time to gain what this academy afforded. It is something I would highly recommend to any women ED." Jennifer Strayhorn, Executive Director, HOPEBUILD

| NSC's Effectiveness In...Program Design and Measurement |
Design Your Programs with the End in Mind:What do you want your program to achieve?
Dr. Tullia Hamilton will conduct a highly interactive instructional
workshop built around the question of "what do you want to achieve
rather than what do you want to do." Over the last decade, funders
have placed increased emphasis
on the impact of the programs they fund. This workshop is designed to
help improve the ability of participants think about program
development in new ways...to think about developing programs with "the
end
in mind." Cape Girardeau |

US Senators Push to Create Tax Incentive for Increased Giving by Foundations
|
U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer (D-NY), Carl Levin (D-MI) and Debbie Stabenow
(D-MI) today announced that they have introduced legislation to simplify the tax
code for private foundations, a move that would create a new incentive for
increased charitable giving. The current excise tax imposed on private
foundations punishes them for years in which they increase giving by taxing them
at a higher rate in the subsequent years. The tax code was intended to encourage
giving, but the current two-tiered excise tax system instead has the opposite
effect. Read the press release... |
Serve America Act Approved
|
A move to greatly increase
the number of Americans who participate in national-service programs -
championed by a wide variety of nonprofit groups - cleared its final major
hurdle today, when the Senate adopted the Serve America Act. Senators approved the
legislation - which would more than triple the number of participants in
AmeriCorps and create an array of new volunteer programs for people of all ages
- with a bipartisan vote of 79 to 19. Read more on the bill...

Arts in Crisis: A Kennedy Center Initative
|
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts today announced Arts in Crisis: A Kennedy Center Initiative, a program designed to provide
emergency planning assistance to struggling arts organizations throughout the
United States.
Expanding on previously existing arts management programs at the
Kennedy Center, Arts in Crisis will provide free consulting
from both Kennedy Center President Michael M. Kaiser and members of the Kennedy
Center's executive staff.
Arts in Crisis: A Kennedy Center Initiative is a response to
the emergency facing arts organizations throughout the United States. The
current economic climate has reduced earned and contributed income, decimated
endowments, and has left some organizations struggling for survival. Companies
of all sizes, localities, and performing arts disciplines have been affected.
The program, open to non-profit 501(c)(3) performing arts organizations, will
provide free and confidential counsel in fundraising, building more effective
Boards of Trustees, budgeting, marketing, and other areas pertinent to
maintaining a vital performing arts organization during a troubled economy. Read more...
