The mission of NSC is to strengthen our region's nonprofit organizations and the nonprofit sector as a whole by providing programs, services, and resources that inform, promote, and connect nonprofits as they work to improve people's lives.
Greetings!

NSC hasn't needed daylight savings time to spring forward - we've been moving forward for some time with new programs and services.  In fact, the Development Officer's Roundtable was so popular that we have added another cohort opportunity in rural Missouri!

And watch for more programming - NSC is just getting started!

"The Women's Academy has removed the feelings of isolation, developed lasting friendships/partnerships, and became a base for networking.  These are just some of the highlights.  I would not have been able to nor probably created the time to gain what this academy afforded.  It is something I would highly recommend to any women ED."  Jennifer Strayhorn

Study Finds More Funding to Benefit Society Needed

A report from the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy [www.ncrp.org] released this month, offers a series of recommendations and guidelines on how grant makers should improve their giving and management.  It attempts to answer the questions: What differentiates an exemplary foundation from the rest of its peers? What can foundations do to improve its relevance to nonprofits, the economically and socially underserved Americans and society as a whole?

The report, Criteria for Philanthropy at Its Best: Benchmarks to Assess and Enhance Grantmaker Impact [executive summary, 16 pgs, PDF] suggests that grantmakers are not delivering as much social benefit as they could.  It also suggests that foundations should spend at least half of their grant dollars to help poor neighborhoods and minorities.  Read more on the study.
MAC Funding Withheld
The Missouri Arts Council (MAC) received word from Linda Martinez, Director of Economic Development, about their funding for the rest of the fiscal year 2009:

"The budget situation during the current fiscal year (FY09) has presented state government with a number of difficult choices, with many agencies having to withhold substantial amounts of funding to close shortfalls in the overall state budget. The Missouri Arts Council is one of those agencies that is being affected, as the Council is slated for a withholding of $5.562 million.

Despite the withholding, the Missouri Arts Council will still honor all of its current commitments to its grantees that have been approved. The Council will be suspending Monthly Strategic Grants for the remainder of FY09. Any grants already submitted for FY09 that have not been approved will not be funded."

Sincerely,
Linda Martinez
Director
