Nonprofits to the Rescue
Lester Salamon recently wrote an op-ed piece in the Chronicle of Philanthropy on his ideas to bolster the economy.  We thought it was interesting and hope you do too.  Please tell us what you think.  Here's an exerpt:

As President-elect Obama and members of Congress get to work on what promises to be the mother of all economic-recovery programs, much of the talk has focused on an expected vast infusion of cash into state and local governments for a variety of long-delayed public-works projects.

Largely overlooked in those discussions, however, is a far more direct way to provide assistance and stimulate recovery, one that can also foster a sense of citizen involvement and national purpose. That mechanism is the more than one million nonprofit organizations with their 11 million paid employees and countless more volunteers firmly rooted in urban, suburban, and rural communities across this country.

Balancing Mission and Money During an Economic Downturn
An Effectiveness In... Financial Leadership Workshop
with Steve Zimmerman

Independent Living Resource Center (ILRC) [map it]
3260 West Truman Blvd., Jefferson City, MO 65109

This session is tailored to senior level management staff.

With funding decreasing and demand for services increasing nonprofits are facing an even tighter balance between mission and money.  This session discusses the Executive Director's role as the financial leader of the organization and provides the skills necessary to better understand your finances and how the organization's activities work together to both accomplish the mission and create financial viability.  We'll also cover the questions you should be asking of and how to monitor and communicate all this information with your board of directors.   [Register Now]
Study Finds Nonprofits Benefit from More Operating Assistance
In a new national study on foundations' philanthropic practices (sponsored by Grantmakers for Effective Organizations), three priorities surfaced:
  1. Nonprofits benefit from more operating assistance,
  2. multiyear grants, and
  3. a more supportive working relationship.

Coordinate your needs with your funder.  Download a copy of the study (registration will be required.)

BoardLinkStL Success Story - Edgewood Children's Center

John Munich fufills his career and life goals with the help of BoardLinkStL
From when I completed the BoardLinkStL worshop to when I had a sit-down meeting at Edgewood Children's Center, it was probably about a year.  I believe I contacted Edgewood first.  I met with a member of the nominating committee and then had a second meeting with additional board members.

Without BoardLinkStL, I never would have been able to identify so readily with boards that were seeking new members and with boards that were looking for someone with my set of skills/background.  I would have been reduced to asking around and happenstance.  The most useful thing was the ability to conduct searches of openings and the ability to put together a pretty tightly defined profile so I did not waste time looking at board openings for which I was not suited.

With my career and life goals, BoardLinkStL has allowed me to give back to the community and to begin to have an effect on the lives of people less fortunate than me.  Those were two personal goals I set for myself a couple of years ago.

Does your organization have a board position it needs to fill?  Find out how you too can find the right board member by going to BoardLinkStL today!
