Greetings!
It's hard to believe that a new year is around the corner.  NSC is preparing to welcome 2009 with open arms as we have a lot to look forward to in the new year.

NSC proudly welcomes two of our regions preeminent nonprofit leaders to our staff:  Dr. Theresa Mayberry and Ms. Donna McGinnis.

Theresa Mayberry, PhD., [bio] has been named Project Director of NSC's Leadership Services.   Dr. Mayberry will be overseeing our current Leadership Academy Program for Women Executive Directors, as well as the Women's Leadership Forum.  She is also overseeing the development and implementation of a leadership pathway for nonprofit executives. This program - open to all genders - will help strengthen current leadership and identify and cultivate emerging leaders.

Ms. Donna McGinnis, MBA CFRE, [bio] has been named Project Director, Consultant Services - a new line of concentration for NSC.  Donna will be developing and teaching fund development courses for NSC, and assembling a pool of talented consultants to work with nonprofits on a variety of capacity building projects.

Please join us in welcoming such esteemed colleagues to our staff as NSC continues to build the staff and programming you need to succeed.

You can reach Donna and Theresa by calling the NSC office at 314.436.9580 or via email to donna@nonprofitservices.org or theresa@nonprofitservices.org

Watch for more information coming soon on both new program offerings.

We look forward to seeing you at the next NSC program!
Goodbye Kristy
As we prepare to welcome two new colleagues, we are sad to say goodbye to a friend that has seen us through NSC's latest transition.

Kristy Guttman will be leaving NSC at the end of the year.  She will be moving to Milwaukee to join Steve Zimmerman at Spectrum Nonprofit Services.

Kristy has been a great manager and friend to us at NSC.  She helped guide us with new and fresh perspectives and reminded us the importance of determined and strategic thinking.  Her thoughtful manner and innovative ideas will be missed.

We wish her all the best on her new adventure and remind her to bundle up - it's cold up there!

New Members Sought for Southern Illniois ED Roundtable
EDs in Southern Illinois have an opportunity to join the ED Roundtable for 2009!  Don't miss joining this resource that past participants have called the "one meeting I try hard to attend.  I've yet to regret taking time away from all the tasks on my desk."

Since 2005 a total of more than 36 nonprofit executive directors have been meeting in two roundtable groups engaging in peer to peer discussions on such pressing issues as effective team development, leadership, fund raising, volunteer programs, financial management, and board development and recruitment.   These Executive Directors lead agencies that provide a variety of services to communities as far north as Madison County and as far south as Alexander County in Illinois.

Seeking New Members
Both groups are seeking new members to engage in discussion and sharing in a safe, facilitated environment.  Each roundtable is comprised of 12 Illinois nonprofit executives who meet on a regular date and time convenient to all of the members.   The participants choose the topic, set the agenda and the group provides feedback, encouragement and experience through facilitated discussion; thus helping each member gain understanding and perspective of the topic at hand.

Philanthropic Collaborative Launched to Educate Policymakers
With severe economic pressure mounting on all sectors of the economy, a broad-cross section of interests announced today they have formed The Philanthropic Collaborative (TPC). The organization's mission is to educate federal and state policymakers about the critical benefits of philanthropic dollars in communities across the nation, and to work with policymakers to ensure this much-needed source of funding is not restricted by new federal economic policies.

TPC released a study, "The Social and Economic Value of Private and Community Foundations" [executive summary, PDF, 5 pgsprepared by economist Robert Shapiro, a former top Clinton Administration economic official. The study demonstrates that, for every dollar foundations spend, more than $8 is generated in local and national economic benefits.  [Read more
What's Your Idea for Change in America?
President-Elect Obama says he wants to hear ideas from all Americans, so Change.org is taking him up on his offer.  Change.org, a Web site that connects donors with causes, is  asking readers to submit their ideas for how Mr. Obama should change America, and many of the proposals have a nonprofit bent.

The "Top 10 Ideas for America" will be presented to the Obama Administration on Inauguration Day. We will then build a national campaign to advance each idea in Congress, marshaling the resources of Change.org, MySpace, and our dozens of partner organizations and millions of combined members.
20 Emergency Funding Sources for Nonprofits

Revolving Loan Fund for Charities Proposed
Chronicle of Philanthropy announced today that Independent Sector, a coalition of charities and foundations, is working on a proposal for a government revolving-loan fund to help cash-strapped nonprofit groups respond to growing caseloads as the economic crisis takes its toll.

Ms. Aviv told House staff members that her organization planned to hold a meeting on Wednesday with affected charities and others to discuss how to structure such a loan fund. She said some groups are unable to get "bridge loans" from banks as they did in the past to tide them over when expected revenues have not yet arrived.  [Read the article]

A revolving-loan fund sets up a pool of money and as repayments come in, the money is made available to new borrowers.

Ms. Aviv said after the briefing that participants in Wednesday's meeting will explore how the federal government could set up a program, perhaps dubbed an "essential-services revolving-loan fund," looking at questions like which charities would qualify for the money. She said the fund could be set up, for example, in the Health and Human Services Department.
