NSC IS MOVING!
Just two floors up -
1015 Locust Street, Suite 801
Same phone, same fax, same helpful smiles if you come visit!
Greetings!
How are you handling the economic downturn?  Yes, it's hitting us all rather hard.  This newsletter is dedicated to weathering this current economy and what we can do to survive - or even thrive - through the next few years.

We saw in the study, Philanthropic Giving Index, by the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University that a majority of nonprofits reported the current economy is having a negative impact on their bottom line.    They also report that nonprofits are less optimistic about their current and future fundraising climates than they were just six to eight months ago.

NSC found that to be true because it was just eight months ago that NSC discovered the results of our study, Missouri Nonprofits: Building Capacity in the 21st Century which told a different story.  This benchmark study conducted for the years 2004 - 2006 - prior to the current economic downturn - suggests that Missouri nonprofits are adept at managing the constant challenges posed by uncertain and restricted income but are challenged to grow their programs without additional resources.

What can you do to help your organization work through this present economy?  Well to start, take a look at the two articles in this newsletter from the Grassroots Fundraising Journal  (grassrootsfundraising.org) to help you and your organization through these tough times.

The first article, "How to Prepare Your Nonprofit for an Economic Recession" by Richard Male offers 10 tips to help your organization prepare for a not-so-certain future.

The second article by Kim Klein, founder of Grassroots Fundraising Journal and national nonprofit thought leader, "How to Raise $50,000 in Six Weeks" teaches us how to use urgency to our advantage.

Kim Klein to present
Fundraising in Times of Crisis
NSC is excited and priviledged to announce an afternoon with Kim Klein presenting on Fundraising in Times of Crisis on November 11, 2008 at COCA, 524 Trinity [directions], 12:00 PM - 3:00 PM, [register now].

Klein will discuss what staff need to do to take advantage of these times, and avoid common pitfalls.  She will then give organizations a chance to reflect on their own situation and get advice from other participants and from her.  This highly interactive learning session will let participants leave with some very specific ideas for weathering, and even perhaps thriving, over the next few years.  Klein will ask everyone what their biggest fundraising challenge is right now and discover if there are any opportunities their organization should be taking advantage of.

Cost is $15 for this exceptional workshop and all registrants attending the program will receive a one-year subscription to Grassroots Fundraising Journal (a $38 value).  Register soon, space is limited to allow for interactive participation.

Nonprofit President Council Breakfast Series
on November 11, 8:00 AM - 9:30 AM at the Engineers Club will offer board chairs and members an opportunity to hear first hand from Kim Klein on What Board Presidents Need to Know on Fundraising in Times of Crisis.  [Register now]

There is so much more... happy reading.
How to Prepare Your Nonprofit for an Economic Recession
RichardMaleby Richard Male for Grassroots Fundraising Journal

During the past several months a sense of panic has settled in about the economy, led by the issues of housing foreclosures, the loss of value in the international and national stock exchanges, and the federal government's economic stimulus package. Most  economists are saying we are either close to or already in a recession that could last more than a year. For nonprofits, these economic worries bring an additional challenge to raising funds. Individual giving is 85 percent of total philanthropic dollars; whether and how much someone gives away depends a great deal on how the individual who is giving the money feels about the economy. Private foundations, too, are feeling the pinch, as most are invested in a decreasing stock market.  Read the complete article...
How to Raise $50,000 in Six Weeks
by Kim Klein
Using Urgency to Your Advantage
KimKleinOne stratgy that many organizations can experience with is ... the kind of intensive short-term campaign that allows an organization to bring people in who are not going to volunteer year round or who may not be appropriate as board members, but who will participate in a time-limited effort.  Read the entire article...
Rural America Faces Diverse Challenges, Report Finds
In a nation whose urban needs influence federal policy and whose rural policy is dominated by agriculture, rural areas that have more urban-style woes can fall through the cracks, USA Today reports.

According to Place Matters: Challenges and Opportunities in Four Rural Americas (36 pages, PDF), rural America is home to 17 percent of the nation's population. But rather than being predominantly farmland, it consists of at least four distinct regions facing different problems. Issued by the Carsey Institute at the University of New Hampshire, the report found that areas such as Aspen, Colorado, or the Appalachian region around Asheville, North Carolina, are amenity-rich and draw tourists and retirees but face challenges such as affordable housing for workers and long-time residents as well as sprawl that threatens the local environment.

Universities Facing More Pressure to Use Endowment Funds
According to an article in Financial Times, measures to require U.S. colleges to spend more of their endowments on helping poor students gained momentum this week after  two members of Congress announced that they will hold high-level discussions on the matter.

Members of Congress have questioned why some universities have increased tuition fees faster than the rate of inflation, even as the value of their endowments has soared. According to a study conducted by the National Association of College and University Business Officers, the median one-year return among colleges with endowments greater than $1 billion was 21 percent in 2007. For all colleges, the median return was 17.2 percent, the highest since 1998.  Read the entire article
