Greetings!

Summer is here, but that doesn't mean a time of rest for NSC.  We have highlighted several programs in this newsletter to help build your organization's or your individual capacity!

The 2008/2009 Academy for Women Executive Directors is now forming.  NSC is inviting female executive directors to join the 2008/2009 Class within either the Executive Directors Serving Underserved Communities or the Executive Directors of Color track.  But don't wait too long to apply for this popular program - space is limited and deadline is on July 31, 2008.

The President's Council will offer its third breakfast workshop of the year on August 14 at the  Engineers Club in St. Louis.   Dr. Leslie Schuler will discuss the importance of evaluation in attracting and sustaining program funding.  Please encourage your board president/chair to attend this informative and beneficial peer network.  Register for the event through the NSC website.

And, you don't want to miss the Fall Cycle of the MFH Capacity Building Technical Assistance Grants.  Fall Cycle will open on July 8, 2008!  So watch our website for more information and a downloadable application.  Descriptions of previously funded grants can be found on the NSC website as well.

We've also included the first of many research papers offered by NSC that will focus on a variety of segments of the nonprofit sector in Missouri.  We believe this research will help in forming a better understanding of the sector and inform all stakeholders with a vested interest in the sector as a whole.

As always, we have included several informative articles and grant opportunities to help you with your day to day work.

We hope to see you at one of the upcoming programs very soon.

Until then, happy reading...
Saying Goodbye to Clarence
Clarence Hauer, NSC's long time Senior Director of Strategy and Organizational Impact left NSC as of June 30.  He will be moving to Boston to take a senior position at a large local hospital.

Clarence has been with NSC since 2000 and helped form NSC with great vision and purpose.  He had a tremendous knowledge of the impact capacity building makes on nonprofit organizations and had a keen understanding of capacity building's impact on transformation and positive social change.

Clarence, your friends at NSC will miss you and your wisdom and passion for the nonprofit sector in Missouri.  We wish you luck in your new endeavor.  Bye, Clarence!

Missouri Reporting Public Charities: A Snapshot
NSC is proud to present a snapshot focused on a central segment of the nonprofit sector in the state of Missouri - public charities, providing answers to basic questions regarding the size, structure and impact of this group of nonprofits.   The report summary, Missouri Reporting Public Charities: A Snapshot (14 pages, PDF) contains information that will hopefully serve as a useful tool in guiding decisions regarding planning, strategic development, and investment by various stakeholders who have a vested interest in the well-being of Missouri's nonprofit sector.

The nonprofit sector is an important and vital aspect of American society, providing numerous programs, services, and resources that enhance the quality of life in communities throughout the nation. NSC partnered with RegionWise, an applied research services organization at Saint Louis University to create this document.

Most Corporations Not Maximizing Their Philanthropy, Report Finds
Although the majority of CEOs believe corporate philanthropy is an effective way to meet evolving expectations for their companies' social behavior, only a small percentage of companies are truly efficient in their philanthropy, a new report from the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy finds.

Based on a survey of more than seven hundred C-suite executives, personal interviews with twenty-four CECP CEO members, and a two-hour roundtable discussion involving forty CEOs and chairpersons, the report, Business's Social Contract: Capturing the Corporate Philanthropy Opportunity (28 pages, PDF), found that 84 percent of executives recognize that expectations for their companies' social behavior have increased, while 75 percent believe corporate philanthropy is an effective way of meeting those expectations. Due to a number of complex challenges, however, only 11 percent of companies are truly efficient in their philanthropy, maximizing both the business and social impact of their efforts.
Best Practices for a Good Job Fit
Finding the right fit in a nonprofit organization can be challenging for job seekers in general, but that can be especially true for "bridgers," individuals transitioning from the private sector to the nonprofit sector, according to the June issue of "Leadership Matters."

Published by Bridgestar, a nonprofit initiative of the Bridgespan Group dedicated to attracting, connecting, and supporting leadership for the sector, the June issue of "Leadership Matters" presents best practices that consistently increase the chances of finding the right job fit. These practices can be applied in two categories: learning about yourself and learning about your potential employer. The insights are based on Bridgestar's recruiting expertise and a series of interviews that the organization conducted with senior nonprofit leaders.
