Health Interventions in Non-Traditional Settings (HINTS)
Faith-based organizations and small secular organizations serve an important role in the life of many communities as part of their ministry or service.  Such organizations often are also involved in health-related activities, both preventative and clinical, and comprise a non-traditional resource for addressing health needs and issues in their respective communities.   In recognition of those efforts, Missouri Foundation for Health developed "Health Interventions in Non-Traditional Settings" (HINTS) which provides funding to eligible nonprofits not typically considered "traditional" health organizations.  [Read more on MFH HINTS funding.]

NSC is proud to announce new programming specifically for faith-based, or "non-traditional," organizations providing health services to their communities.  In partnership with the MFH, NSC will be offering a free workshop, "Building a 'Fundable' Faith-Based Organization" in April presented by Sherrye Willis, founder of the Faith & Philanthropy Institute.

Ready to Lead CoverNext Generation Leaders Speak Out
A National Study Produced in Partnership by CompassPoint Nonprofit Services, The Annie E. Casey Foundation, the Meyer Foundation and Idealist.org.

A skilled, committed, and diverse pool of next generation leaders would like to be nonprofit executive directors in the future, according to a new national survey of nearly 6,000 next generation leaders. However, a recent survey by the Meyer Foundation, The Annie E. Casey Foundation, CompassPoint and Idealist.org, also finds that there are significant barriers: work-life balance, insufficient life-long earning potential, lack of mentorship and overwhelming fundraising responsibilities which may prevent many younger nonprofit staff from becoming executives.

The survey, Ready to Lead? Next Generation Leaders Speak Out, is the largest national survey to date of emerging nonprofit leaders.  Download [pdf]

What do you think?
We want to know your thoughts!  Is this survey on target?  Do we face the same/similar situation here in St. Louis?   As a young nonprofit professional, will you particpiate in the recently formed St. Louis chapter of the Young Nonprofit Professional Network?  Email carmen@nonprofitservices.org with your thoughts.
The Voice of Nonprofit Talent
"Nonprofit Jobseekers Say to Employers: 'We Want Change Now'."

Many nonprofit jobseekers are eager to build long-term careers in the social sector but believe that nonprofit employers are not doing enough to address the obstacles they face, a new report from Commongood Careers finds.  Based on data from a recent survey of 1,750 nonprofit jobseekers, the report, The Voice of Nonprofit Talent in 2008 (8 pages, PDF), finds that 63 percent of respondents plan to stay in the sector for a least ten years and that 82 percent hope to hold an executive level position.  However, many respondents believe that the relative absence of career ladders, mentors, and professional development, as well as concerns about salary levels and a healthy work-life balance, may limit their ability to remain in the sector.  Read more.

Bill Gates uses Social Networking
According to the Philanthropy News Digest, Bill Gates will use LinkedIn, the popular professional networking site, to ask how technology can be better used to support his charitable causes, Network World reports.

The Microsoft chairman, who officially becomes a part-time employee of the company in July, will post the question to nineteen million users of LinkedIn via its question feature. The feature allows a question to be posed to the entire LinkedIn network, which, according to a LinkedIn spokesperson, includes top executives at all Fortune 500 companies. Members of the network will be able to post answers to Gates' question in real time. According to LinkedIn, Gates will use the responses to further his philanthropic work at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Last year, Gates' attempt to establish a profile on social networking site Facebook ran into trouble when he was overwhelmed with "friends" requests, forcing him to close the profile. In October 2007, Microsoft invested $240 million in Facebook.
