Technical Assistance Grants Announced
NSC is pleased to once again serve as the review team for MFH's Technical Assistance Grants Program.  The RFP for Cycle One 2008 Technical Assistance Grants is now on our website

The Missouri Foundation for Health (MFH) has a strong commitment to assisting health and health-related nonprofits and exempt government entities develop and implement programming that contributes to the overall health status and well-being of Missouri's citizens.  The MFH Technical Assistance Grants Program is one such program that is focused on the provision of funding support to specific, discrete, short-term interventions that will help an organization (or coalition of organizations) be more efficient in its mode of operating and effective in accomplishing its mission objectives.
Not Your Daddy's Board Basics
Nonprofit Presidents Council
On February 14, NSC and the Nonprofit Presidents Council hosted Ms. Ruth McCambridge, editor-in-chief of The Nonprofit Quarterly presenting on "Basic Board Responsibilities" at the first installment in the 2008 quarterly series.  [See Series Calendar]

McCambridge first noted that in her travels and to her knowledge she has not found an affinity group or other national association specifically tailored for nonprofit board presidents.  She commended the effort being put forth by NSC and the President's Council in establishing the group and offering an opportunity for board presidents to network and learn more about governance functions.  She also encouraged those present to invite their colleagues to join them at future presentations.

As the presentation got started McCambridge was quick to point out that perhaps a better title for the presentation would have been "Not Your Daddy's Board Basics".  She explained that many of the suggestions and theories she would present are not the typical basics normally presented or expected as "basics".

McCambridge stated that the "typical" prescriptions for boards are not yielding the results they intended (i.e. well functioning boards that are integrated into the work of the organization).   Read more...
Women's Executive Director Leadership Forum 2008
Cedar Creek Conference Center
New Haven, Missouri
June 5 & 6, 2008

Last year's Women's Executive Director Forum gave women from various parts of Missouri and Southern Illinois a chance to meet, celebrate, and learn from other each other through peer panels and group discussions on leadership styles, balancing life, and other unique aspects of being a female executive director
.  What we heard from those in attendance:
From start to finish, it was a wonderful time of training, networking, learning, and dreaming.  The only deficit was that it ended too quickly.

Just a short "e-note" to let you know that the retreat was exceptional!

The hard work, excellence and dedication to empowerment were evident throughout the event.  Thanks, to everyone, who made it a practical and renewing event.
I think we are blessed to work and serve in the nonprofit sector.  From the first two days, it appears that we have begun an experience that will help us better understand and facilitate the business we lead.

Registrations will be open within the next few weeks.  Don't miss out on this opportunity to meet and retreat!  Be sure to watch the NSC website for more information!

Five Recommendation to Ease the Sting of Possible Recession
Nonprofit Finance Fund (NFF) Outlines Five Recommendations to Prepare for Economic Downturn
Nonprofits, funders and donors facing a possible recession would do well to draw lessons from the challenging economic period that the sector went through in 2001, made worse by 9-11, according to Nonprofit Finance Fund President and CEO Clara Miller. The NFF head outlined five recommendations for what nonprofits can do now to ease the sting of any current and future recessions.
  1. Nonprofits heading into recession need to avoid "strong, silent behavior" and sustained spending, which has been a hallmark of the industry for more than a decade, and continues to make nonprofits weaker, not stronger.
  2. Nonprofits should engage with board members and funders in contingency planning on what is likely to happen to clients and funders during a recession.
  3. Nonprofits should avoid large investments in fixed assets and infrastructure (i.e., a building purchase, new hires or expansion of services), and if change (growth or retrenchment) is likely, then nonprofits need to work with funders and board to build a cushion to allow flexibility and course corrections.
  4. Nonprofits need to get a firm handle now on their revenue patterns.
  5. If they offer services (e.g., job retraining, food kitchens and housing services) that will lessen the negative impact of an economic downturn, nonprofits should approach government funders more aggressively.
A Few Good Accounting Packages
by Idealware

As tax season approaches, take a moment to reflect on last year's process. Did your tax preparations involve stress, chaos, and panic?  Or was it relatively trouble free? Could you create the reports you needed? Track restricted funds? Access your accounting software without worrying about causing a fatal system error?

The difference between a painful and an easy tax season can be as simple as your accounting software package -- or lack thereof. If you're struggling to create reports, track expenses, and complete necessary tasks, it may be time for a new system. And while we can't prepare your taxes for you, we can suggest a few tools that might help.
