January 2010

Welcome to Venturity News and Notes, our bi-monthly e-newsletter sharing insights into the services of our clients and service partners - with the goal of providing you with quality resources you can call on to assist your organization, or the organization of someone you know.

This month, our Client Spotlight focuses on Powter Insurance Agency. With over 15 years of experience under his belt, John Powter leads a team that focuses on providing a full service solution to its clients. Powter focuses on the smaller end of the hospitality, high tech, retail and manufacturing industries, targeting companies with less than 250 employees.

Our Partner Spotlight shines on Jennifer Chin and her firm SourceCorp Professional Services. SourceCorp, based in Fort Worth, is the nation’s leading provider of specialized business tax services. In her role as Director of Business Development, Jennifer works with CPA firms and bankers to help their clients maximize state and federal tax incentives.

As we begin 2010 and look ahead to what the new year holds, we look forward to continuing to develop our client and partner relationships right here at home in the Dallas/Fort Worth market as well as forming new relationships with our recent expansion into the San Antonio market.

Powter Insurance Agency Inc.
Right combination of choice, coverage
benefits businesses
- - - - - - - - - -

John Powter believes insurance agents don’t provide enough choices for small to medium-sized businesses.

So 15 years ago he created Powter Insurance Agency Inc. to improve the options by shopping dozens of carriers with a single keystroke. Powter agency’s management software system can search 20 to 30 carriers and find business operators the right property casualty and group benefits insurance.

“Our philosophy is it’s not just about the premium,” he said. “The real art is how can we lower your total costs of risk by lowering deductibles, increasing coverage and decreasing premiums. That’s what we strive for.”

The McKinney company is probably best known for insuring more than 600 Domino’s pizza franchises, but its “sweet spot” is working with companies in the hospitality, high tech, retail and manufacturing industries that have five to 250 employees. These industry sectors are underserved because they are smaller and typically involve more risk.

Powter knows plenty about risk, and wasn’t willing to take chances with his company’s complex accounting needs. Through a comprehensive service offering provided by its strategic finance partner, StratiFi, and its day to day transaction partner, Venturity, Powter has all of his bases covered as it relates to the company’s finance and accounting needs.

“Insurance accounting is different than any other accounting,” he said. “It’s difficult to maintain. We got into an area where our accounting picture wasn’t as clear as it should be. Venturity cleaned it up and improved our forecasting and ability to plan going forward. Most importantly, they learned our systems. They’ve done a great job. They helped us with two acquisitions, so far, which has allowed us to scale and take it to the next level. We went from scrambling to scaling.”

SourceCorp Professional
Services

Services help companies reduce
taxes, save money
- - - - - - - - - -

Few of us have the time - or the inclination - to try to stay abreast of the ever-changing tax laws.

SourceCorp Professional Services does the legwork for businesses, helping them pay less tax through its specialized tax solutions, including:
Research & Development (R&D) Tax Credit;
Cost Segregation Studies;
Inventory Tax Strategies; and
Energy Efficient Commercial Building Tax Deductions.
The Fort Worth-based company offers all of these services under one roof, making it a one-stop shop for certified public accountants and individual businesses alike.

“The tax laws change regularly and it’s very difficult for clients to keep abreast of that,” said Jennifer Chin, Director of Business Development. “Many of the tax changes are to their advantage, but clients just don’t know about it.”

The company has similar roots as Venturity, which founded its business on relationships with bankers and CPAs.

“I have built my business through CPAs,” Chin said of her 27-year-old company. “Venturity and SourceCorp play in the same space. Being in accounting services, we both tend to work through CPAs for obvious reasons. We complement one another.”

Venturity Managing Partner Chris McKee said that SourceCorp is keenly focused on maximizing state and federal tax incentives, increasing cash flow, minimizing tax payments and increasing return on investment. That’s a great service for any of our clients.
