Meet Cottingham Farm!
 | |
Cleo Braver
|
We welcome Cottingham Farm to Bethesda Central Farm Market this year. Cottingham Farm is located in Talbot County, Maryland. The original land was settled in 1658 by Isaac Abraham who arrived from England to farm tobacco on fifty acres. Today Cottingham encompasses hundreds of acres on Maryland's Eastern Shore which lies in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
We had the pleasure of visiting Cottingham Farm recently and saw first-hand how owner Cleo Braver and her team are working hard to have a positive impact on the people who eat their food, on the Goldsborough Creek, and the Chesapeake Bay. Cottingham has adopted a number of environmental practices such as using certified organic seeds, growing heirloom vegetables in order to preserve varieties, installing over fifty acres of Conservation Reserve practices including an eighteen acre wetland which is a habitat for teal, black duck and other disappearing native waterfowl and reducing the average food-miles traveled in this country, not selling foods more than one hundred miles for the farm. We toured the farm, learned about the farming methods and watched as they picked fresh carrots for us.
Stop by Cottingham Farms stand and say hi to Cleo to find out more about the farm and organic farming. read more DID YOU KNOW THAT?
They love Courgettes that grow during the summers in the UK? We love them too, but we call them Zucchinis. Zucchinis have a high water content, are low in calories and are a great source of folate, potassium, and vitamins A and C!
