Go Ahead, Pass the Salt (but not regular table salt)

For years experts have told us to eat less salt, but could they be wrong?  A recent Cochrane Libray analysis of 167 different studies examined the effect of low-salt diets on blood pressure, cholesterol and other markers of health and found that too little salt can be dangerous.  Low-salt diets typically contain no more than 1500-1600 mg of sodium daily.

The study published in the American Journal of Hypertension found that among people with hypertension, salt reduction had only a modest effect on blood pressure, but it raised cholesterol and triglycerides - another blood fat that's dangerous when elevated.  And some studies have found that in people with heart failure or type 1 or 2 diabetes, too little salt can be life threatening.
