FEATURED BVD MEMBER
SARAH BARNES
Sarah and Remember Me
I've been a member of Boulder Valley Dressage for several years, ever since I began participating in dressage shows in our area. I'm actually primarily an eventer and active in the Boulder Valley Eventing Association. While not many of my fellow eventers also compete in straight dressage, I've found the cross-training to be incredibly helpful. Nothing improves a horse's abilities in stadium and cross-country like the balanced gaits and adjustability encouraged by correct dressage training.
I also really enjoy the people I've gotten to know through my involvement with the dressage community here - they are a very friendly and supportive group. Plus we are so blessed to have wonderful show facilities like Autumn Hill and Somerset within such easy reach - it would be a shame not to take advantage of these great opportunities!

I came to dressage somewhat late in my riding career. Like many of us, I rode as a child (hunter/jumpers) but then moved on to other things during college and young adulthood. Most of my twenties and thirties were spent earning a Ph.D. in History and starting a family. But when we moved to Colorado in 1999 and my daughters reached the age when they could start riding, I knew it was time to get back into horses. That's when I discovered both dressage and eventing. Although initially most of my time went toward academic pursuits, before long, I was also teaching riding on the side. Then, about five years ago, I decided to give up academia entirely and concentrate on the horses. I haven't looked back.
My happiest moments are when one of my students breaks into a big smile because she's just discovered that elusive aid. Because I love to teach and because I've had to work hard to improve my own abilities in the saddle, I really enjoy helping others. I am now one of the trainers and barn managers at Windy Creek Ranch in Longmont. In addition to instructing and competing, I bring in several clinicians each year, including James Shaw (Tai Chi for Equestrians), and Eric Smiley (Irish Olympic eventer), as well as volunteering with BVD and BVEA.
Over the years I've had several equine partners of many different breeds, including a thoroughbred, a Swedish warmblood, a draft cross, and a Trakehner. My current competition partner is my daughter's Morgan mare, Remember Me. Although she is not very big, she is all heart and such a pro at her job, whether in the dressage ring or on the cross-country course. My new project is an unstarted four-year old Oldenburg mare named Tio. I can't wait to see how she is going to turn out. I plan to give her a solid dressage foundation and then go from there. Look for Tio & I at the shows next year!

Volunteer Spotlight:
MELISSA MULLIN
Melissa and Orlando
 | Photo: Paul Chinowsky |
"I have been a member of BVD for approximately 8 years and am hoping to show 3rd level by the end of summer, after many years of showing Training and First level. For the first few years I didn't feel like I was "qualified" to volunteer and felt very much a newbie to our sport. But then I realized that everyone is capable of volunteering. For the last several years I have helped with scribing and scoring and even got my husband Paul helping with setup, parking and warm up arena, and our two daughters Sydney and Emily helping with running. I've really enjoyed getting to meet other BVD members while volunteering at shows."
On behalf of BVD and RMDS,
Thank you Melissa!

BVD WEBSITE UPDATE COMING!
We're excited to say that we've hired website development company dottedi.biz to take Boulder Valley Dressage's website to the next level. And we've just purchased the more descriptive, findable domain name: BoulderValleyDressage.org. Development is underway and you can expect to see it operational before the end of summer.
We want to thank Lori Oakley from the bottom of our hearts for building and maintaining the current Boulder Valley Dressage website. Lori developed and continually updated the website as a gift to Boulder Valley Dressage. Lori, we are all very grateful for you and your intent to make Boulder Valley Dressage work for our members.
