topDear Neighbor,

In April, we proudly entered a new era in history with the announcement that SPI: The Plastics Industry Trade Association will host NPE2015 at the Orange County Convention Center. NPE, the International Plastics Showcase, is the largest plastics technology and manufacturing exposition in the world and one of the biggest trade shows in the United States.

With assistance from Visit Orlando, the Orange County Convention Center played an integral role in negotiating the return of this international triennial event and the extraordinary success of NPE2012.

The estimated economic impact of this four-day global conference is pegged at $114 million. It's a game-changer for our convention facility and our region's trade show sector.

With 1,900 companies represented and 55,359 registered attendees, Orange County's event in April experienced a 26 percent uptick in attendance compared to the 5 day show in 2009. The conference was previously based in Chicago's McCormick Place for 40 years.

NPE2012 was certainly one of the largest and most expansive trade shows ever hosted at the Orange County Convention Center. I wish to thank the executive leadership at the Orange County Convention Center, Visit Orlando and our Board of County Commissioners for their assistance in making this event a phenomenal success.

In this issue, I focus on the significant contributions that our trade shows have in maintaining Orange County's economic sustainability. I also discuss the groundbreaking of Fire Station 84 in Christmas and the impact of our show exploring Women's Issues on Orange County LIVE!

But before all that, I will tell you about a very special man who has meant so much to our community.

As always, I thank you for your continued support and for staying connected with your local government.

Sincerely,

Visit Orlando President and CEO Gary Sain leaves distinguished legacy

He was a devoted family man whose passion for making Orlando the No. 1 worldwide tourism destination equaled his charitable undertakings in Central Florida.

Gary Sain, President and CEO of Visit Orlando, passed away last week after delivering the opening remarks at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida's Celebrate the Children fundraiser.

I will remember his leadership, boundless energy and, most of all, his friendship. From Gary's professional commitment to the tourism industry to his dedication to charitable community organizations - whenever you'd call on him, whatever you needed, Gary would step up to the plate.

Gary was a giant in every aspect of life and leaves behind a remarkable legacy as our community's brand ambassador. His passion, foresight and intellect made Gary a champion for the entire travel and tourism industry. Gary took over our tourism bureau in 2007 and renamed the organization Visit Orlando.

Under Gary's leadership, Orlando-Orange County reached a record 51.5 million visitors in 2010. This year, we are projected to draw more than 55 million tourists and business travelers - once again propelling our region as the world's top travel destination.

Not many know that Gary was introduced to work early in life delivering the Chicago Tribune for $25 a month when he was about 10-years-old. As a high-school football player, he worked at a local supermarket stocking shelves and eventually saved enough money to buy his first car, a yellow 1965 Chevy Malibu.

After graduating from Davis & Elkins College, he took a job at the Conrad Hilton in downtown Chicago. Gary would eventually follow in his father's footsteps, Frank Sain, who was president and chief executive officer of the Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau, Inc. and the executive director of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. Frank passed earlier this year.

Gary was extremely close to his wife Pam and his two daughters, Vanessa and Olivia. While business and promoting Orlando-Orange County and the County Convention Center was important, his emphasis and priority was always his family.

In his eulogy to his father, Gary said, "we all come into this world ordinary and it's how we live our lives, how we serve those we are responsible for and how we love others that determines if we leave this world extraordinary."

Gary Sain was extraordinary.

SPI: The Plastics Industry Trade Association brings $114 million in economic impact to Orange County

In April, the Orange County Convention Center featured some of the newest plastics manufacturing technologies during NPE2012, the International Plastics Showcase.

This year's theme, "Breaking the Mold: Reshape the Future of Plastics," focused on a range of future plastics innovations for processors, designers, suppliers and manufacturers.

SPI President and CEO William R. (Bill) Carteaux, Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs, and President and CEO of Visit Orlando Gary Sain at the official opening of NPE2012.

Plastics manufacturing exhibitors and buyers filled both sides of our bustling 2.1 million-square-foot convention center. Hundreds of contract workers and industrial equipment experts assisted in the set up and tear down of almost 20 million pounds of heavy manufacturing machinery - machines that were shipped and transported to Orange County prior to the event.

According to the Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI) Inc., attendance for NPE2012 reached 55,359, whereas registration peaked at 43,000 when the show was held in Chicago.

According to SPI, 40 percent of the exhibiting companies at NPE2012 were international firms. The largest group was from China, with a little over 300, or 16 percent, of all exhibitors. The 28 exhibitors from Mexico and South America represented the largest contingent ever from Latin America.

Orange County Update - NPE2012 held at the Orange County Convention Center.
For the first time, the convention featured a Medical Products Pavilion, which showcased new and emerging technologies for improving and developing medical products.  Conventioneers also got a sneak peek at demonstrations of injection molding machines and the newest molding and packaging for pharmaceutical containers.

The hallmark of our success culminated in SPI announcing it will bring NPE's triennial event back to Orange County in 2015. Our warm hospitality, exemplary customer service, world-class facilities and accommodations were all factors in SPI's final venue decision.

Orange County looks forward to hosting NPE2015, scheduled for March 23-26, 2015.

Orange County Global Trade Series builds more economic development opportunities

Left to right: Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce Executive Vice President Edgardo Bigas, Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce Board Member Orlando Montaez Surez, Orange County - Puerto Rico Trade and Commerce Workgroup Chair Lui Damiani, Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs, Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce Immediate Past Chair Raul Gay, Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Orlando President Ramon Ojeda, Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce Board Member Manuel Cidre.

In April, I hosted the fourth session in a series of economic development forums that focused on promoting global trade in Central Florida. The seminar, organized by the Orange County Puerto Rico Trade and Commerce Workgroup, featured a panel discussion at the National Entrepreneur Center and highlighted the experiences of successful business owners who have entered the Puerto Rican market.

I found new and exciting opportunities brewing as the result of our 3 day trade mission to Puerto Rico last summer with local business owners. I felt it was important to share their experiences and knowledge with other businesses in Central Florida.

Event partners included the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Orlando and the Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce of Central Florida.

I look forward to building more opportunities for economic development between Central Florida and Puerto Rico through the work of our Orange County Puerto Rico Trade and Commerce Workgroup.

Fire Station 84 groundbreaking held in Christmas

Fire Station 84 groundbreaking in Christmas.

Last month, I joined several local community leaders in Christmas to celebrate the groundbreaking of Orange County's brand new, permanent Fire Station #84.

For the past 20 years, fire crews stationed in Christmas have been housed in a manufactured home. Fortunately, we were able to use some savings in last year's budget to fund the fire station and other infrastructure projects that had to be postponed due to the recession.

When completed in a few months, the new Christmas fire station will feature a commercial kitchen, dining area, three dorm rooms with two beds each, locker and storage facilities and an indoor gym. The building will also be strong enough to withstand hurricane strength winds.

Orange TV broadcasts the program in real time from its studios in front of a live studio audience. The goal is to create a dialogue with Orange County citizens through social media platforms and mobile phone applications.

In April, Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD), Orange County's Office for a Drug Free Community and other community agencies sat down for a serious discussion on underage drinking and illegal prescription drug use.

Star Wars descends on administration building

Members of the 501st Legion, a Star Wars costuming organization, visited Orange County in April.

Members of the 501st Legion, the Florida Garrison, recently visited Orange County's Administration Center to film a public service announcement (PSA) for Star Wars Celebration VI, scheduled for August 23-26, 2012, at the Orange County Convention Center.

Orange County leaders and businesses are extremely excited about hosting this popular convention again at the Orange County Convention Center, our center of hospitality. In 2010, Star Wars Celebration V had an estimated economic impact of $36 million when approximately 35,000 Star Wars fans converged on our region.

From manufacturing and plastics technologies to home building and Star Wars, the Orange County Convention Center continues to host a variety of exhibitions, solidifying its standing as the leading global destination for large scale tradeshows, attracting more than 200 domestic and international events annually. In fact, our convention center was voted No. 1 in the nation by Business Review USA in April.

As the second largest convention facility in America, roughly 1.4 million attendees contribute approximately $1.9 billion to the area's economy each year.
