July Quarterly Meeting
 (
update)

At the last Quarterly meeting on Wednesday, July 18 2012, members had an opportunity to participate in a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) exercise. With the help of graduate students from UCSB, great facilitation and participation from members helped to generate information and insights regarding our current efforts as well as directions on areas we can improve.

A survey was sent to members asking to prioritize the list that was generated through the SWOT at the July meeting. The feedback generated will help the steering committee develop the mission and goals for the South Coast Task Force which will be shared at the October quarterly meeting for consideration to be adopted as the work of the SCTFYG.

Presentations

In the past months, presentation updates have been done for the cities of Carpinteria, Goleta and Santa Barbara. One presentation is scheduled with the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors on September 18th in the South County Board of Supervisors Meeting Room.

Service Provider Summit

On Friday, August 24, a Service Provider Summit was held at the Chumash Casino for agencies serving youth in gangs and their families within Santa Barbara County. The event was made possible by a tri-counties grant which focuses on improving coordination within San Luis Obispo County, Santa Barbara County, and Ventura County as well as co-sponsorship by the Lompoc Police Department, the South Coast Task Force on Youth Gangs, and Community Action Commission. The one-day summit was held from 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The agenda featured an opening by the South Coast Task Force on Youth Gangs co-chair Salud Carbajal and a keynote address by Jerry Tello, renowned and nationally recognized for his work in fatherhood and family

Parent services panel (l-r):    Lino Cielo, Isis Castaneda, Marcus Lopez, Jose Moctezuma, Alejandro Vasquez.

development from a culturally appropriate perspective.  The agenda also featured three panel presentations. The panel themes were law enforcement, drug and alcohol treatment, and parent services. During the lunch hour, the Los Prietos Boys Camp Drama Kings group performed their stories and had an opportunity for Q & A with the audience.

The attendees and presenters were able to share important, up-to-date information with each other as well as network throughout the day. The day's evaluation gave us great insight to future topics that we can address in future summits. Overall the day was educational and motivating for the 150 people in attendance.

A law enforcement summit is being planned for September and we will have more information on that summit once it is available.
