Greetings!
Summertime. And at CAC the livin' is busy. Our Nutrition Services staff (assisted by ExxonMobil-funded interns) completed another successful Summer Food Service Program. And, children enrolled in year-round programs joined with their parents and CAC staff to march in Fiesta and Independence Day parades. And, with the beginning of the new school year upon us, teaching staff are in pre-service mode with trainings and classroom preparations. And, there's always another grant proposal to be analyzed, or an audit to be closed out cleanly, or an emergency preparedness plan to be reviewed and updated. And, I'm proud to announce our new mission statement. All that, plus the stories in this issue that you are about to read. Yes, it's been a busy--and exciting--summer at CAC.

South Coast Task Force on Youth Gangs
CAC's Saul Serrano, interim coordinator of the South Coast Task Force on Youth Gangs, gave two excellent presentations recently in front of the Santa Barbara and Goleta city councils. Serrano's reports resulted in positive news coverage from KEYT, The Independent and Noozhawk. Many of the council members from the two cities remarked that they were impressed with the work of the Task Force and the progress it has made since its formation in 2009. (Read more.)

Garden Court Cookie Sale
Residents of Garden Court, an affordable housing community for Santa Barbara seniors, generously donated to CAC's Nutrition Services program the proceeds from two separate cookie sale events. Peanut butter, chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin cookies were baked right in Garden Court's own kitchen. Seniors formed an assembly line and bagged the cookies themselves, fresh from the oven. Ice-cold drinks were also available. With Garden Court's beautiful flowers and foliage in the background, it made a memorable summer moment.

Just as we were about to press the Send button on this newsletter, sad news reached our offices about the death of Al Walker, longtime Lompoc resident and civic leader. Al received CAC's Community Action Champion award in 2011 for his significant history of service to the community. His contributions to the betterment of Lompoc and its residents will be enduring. Al Walker was truly a champion for Lompoc and all of Santa Barbara County. He will be missed.
Sincerely, |

Fran Forman, Executive Director
