Artist Mentor Grant Program Informational Meeting  

Feb. 21 from 5:30 - 7 p.m.

 

R2AC will host an informational meeting about the Artist Mentor Grant program for interested 8-12 graders, their parents, and local artists at Headwaters School of Music and the Arts, 519 Minnesota Avenue NW, Bemidji.

 

Artist mentors and student grant recipients will speak candidly about the application process and the mentoring experience. There will be time for questions.

R2AC Color Logo Feb. 2 & 16    R2AC Presents Professional Development Workshop Series: E-Commerce for Artists with Adeel Ahmed and Ryan Pesch from the University of Minnesota Extension.

 

Social Media Marketing        5:30-8:30 p.m. Feb. 2

Participants explore basic fundamentals of social networking sites and discuss the potential benefits of engaging in social media marketing.

 

Marketing your Website      5:30-8:30 p.m. Feb. 16 Participants learn new ways to improve traffic to their websites.

 

All workshops are in the Bemidji High School Math Computer Lab. Note: The e-Commerce for Artists workshops are currently full. Call or email R2AC if you'd like to be placed on the waiting list.  

 

R2AC Color Logo Feb. 3, 4 & 11     Painting with Yarn - Introduction to Tapestry Weaving with local fabric artist Kristin Majkrzak. Students will be provided a basic frame loom and yarn for weaving and will learn basic weaving techniques such as how to use color, create shapes, and finishing methods for a piece. The workshop will take place at the Headwaters School of Music and the Arts.  To register, send a check in the amount of $75 payable to Headwaters School of Music and the Arts, P.O. The workshop will take participants through the creative process from conception to implementation, emphasizing painting, problem-solving and self-expression, culminating in a May exhibition at the Wild Hare Bistro and Coffeehouse in Bemidji. Feb. 12     Bemidji Symphony Orchestra performs History Meets Music at 3 p.m. in the Bemidji High School Auditorium with Dr. Beverly Everett conducting. Historical re-enactor Clay Jenkinson invites us into the mind and heart of American physicist Robert Oppenheimer. Featuring music connected to Oppenheimer's life and times, including music of Stravinsky, Britten, Tchaikovsky, and Beethoven. Tickets available at Brigid's, Lueken's North, at the door and online. Legacy Logo Feb. 14 - March 15   Mni Sota: Reflections in Time and Place Exhibition will be at The Katherine E. Nash Gallery in Minneapolis. Mni Sota: Reflections of Time and Place showcases the innovative nature of Native American artists whose ingenuity promotes cultural continuity. The works span a wide range of practices from the very old to the very new.

 

legacysmallFeb. 16       Arts Downtown Park Rapids (3rd Thursdays) invites audiences to see and hear visual artists, musicians, writers and other artists in businesses in downtown Park Rapids on the Third Thursday of the month. Hours are generally 5-7 p.m. Events are free and open to the public with a free will donation to the artists encouraged. Artists interested in participating, email or call LuAnn Hurd-Lof 218-652-4081. This year, Arts Downtown participants are eligible to receive a $50 honorarium. Arts Downtown PR is a Legacy grant funded event, sponsored by  PRLAAC.  

 

Feb. 18    Poetry Out Loud Regional Competition 

Winners from regional schools participating in the Poetry Out Loud competition will meet to compete at 1 p.m. at Fosston's Art Center, 405 N. Foss Ave. The winners of this recitation competition will advance to state finals at the Fitzgerald Theatre in St. Paul on March 19.  Poetry Out Loud is sponsored by the Minnesota State Arts Board in partnership with The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation.  The regional and state Poetry Out Loud competitions are open to the public.

   

Feb. 18, 19 & 20     The Mask and Rose Women's Theater Collective presents Ajax in Iraq performed at the Wild Rose Theater. Past and present collide in Ellen McLaughlin's mash-up of Sophocles' classic tragedy Ajax with the modern-day war in Iraq. Features Kathryn Lavelle as AJ and Ivan Smith as Ajax and directed by Cate Belleveau. This is a dinner theater with Iraqi food prepared by the Wild Hare Bistro.

Feb. 19: 12:30 p.m. dinner with play to follow

Feb. 20: 7 p.m. (no dinner)

 

Cost for meal and play: $30

R2AC Color LogoFeb. 26      The Baudette Depot presents Timeless Traditions, an ensemble that blends the Native American Flute and Celtic Folk Harp in classic, ethnic and contemporary music in original settings. This public performance begins at 3 p.m. Cost: free will donation. 

 

Feb. 29      Arts Advocacy Day. Join Region 2 Arts Council staff and hundreds of other Minnesotans to educate our legislators about the importance of state funding support for the arts in Minnesota on Arts Advocacy day.

Nemeth Art Center Director Application: Feb. 15

The Nemeth Art Center in Park Rapids is seeking applicants for the position of Director. This is a part-time position requiring some weekend and evening hours in addition to some weekdays. Talking Stick Volume 21 Deadline: Feb. 20

Submissions accepted from Minnesota writers of poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction for Talking Stick Volume 21. Works are to be unpublished. Monetary prizes will be awarded in each category.  See guidelines for more information.  


 

COMPAS Call for Artists Deadline: Feb. 24

COMPAS is looking for new artists to add to their Artist Roster for work beginning in July 2012. Artists will do performances, workshops, residencies and professional development at schools, libraries, senior care centers and other community sites. See more details or to apply.  

 

Our Town Grant Application Deadline: March 1

Subject to the availability of funding, the National Endowment for the Arts will provide a limited number of Our Town grants, ranging from $25,000 to $150,000, for creative placemaking projects that contribute toward the livability of communities and help transform them into lively, beautiful, and sustainable places with the arts at their core.
