DOES YOUR CONTRACT SECURITY GUARD PROVIDER HAVE EXCESSIVE TURNOVER ISSUES???

 

If there seems to be too much turnover among a company's contract guards, maybe it's because guard services are treated as commodities, by the customer and by the provider. Customers often use low-cost providers, because they feel there is no difference in security officers from one firm to the next. When guard companies have this same attitude, employees have little reason to stay.

Some companies have successfully combated turnover issues. The difference is their ability to show employees that they are valued. Firms such as Atlas Security Services believe in quality over quantity. "It's more than just hiring the right people, it's keeping those same people," says Matt Ventura, President of Atlas Security Services.

 

Some of the steps we have taken to reduce our turnover include:

  • Higher wages

    Hourly wage is often what determines if an applicant accepts a job. Offering a wage that is only slightly more than minimum and barely covers expenses, doesn't help develop loyalty. A relatively small increase in hourly wage will convince a guard to switch employers or stay put.                                                                                                

  • Supplemental benefits

    Offering access to a supplemental insurance plan or 401k has as a direct impact on a person's willingness to stay with an organization and creates a win-win situation for employees, clients and the company.                                                                                                          

  • Training                                                                                                                Raises employee job satisfaction and customer service by developing skills. Every new officer at Atlas is put through our training program. The course includes not only client and site specific training, but also customer service skills.  These skills include conflict resolution and problem solving and this training continues throughout the employee's tenure.                                                                                                                           
  • Career advancement

    Employees at Atlas, know that the company rewards job performance with promotions and choice assignments. A great percentage of our managers and supervisors began their careers as guards. Many of these individuals have been with our organization for a decade or more.

  • Recognition                                                                                                                At  Atlas, every month we  make the effort to recognize a different outstanding employee and reward that person through featuring them in in our publications, newsletters and on our web-site.  Each recipient is also presented with a plaque and gift certificate.  While this is a small gesture, it goes a long way in demonstrating that each employee is appreciated.

Through these efforts, our officers have a more  professional outlook and our clients  gain the benefit of a Security Officer who is doing a job they like, and not just "going through the motions."
