Community Outreach Update

September 2012

Message from the CEO

RandyZila

The digital divide - commonly thought of as a divide between those who have access to high-speed broadband Internet and those who do not - has become redefined throughout the past decade.   Today, the digital divide can be thought of as an issue about bandwidth and usage rather than just computer hardware and access.  It is a gap that must be bridged in order for all Americans to prosper, and we at EAGLE-Net are working to bridge that gap for the state of Colorado.

As technology continues to advance, many broadband services are emerging, such as online medicine, educational Internet classrooms, and video on demand.  These services require reliable, high-speed, broadband connections.

While a number of unserved and underserved communities have limited Internet access, they typically do not have the necessary speed and data requirements needed to fully take advantage of what is now available.  This sentiment is especially true for many of the more remote and rural school districts throughout the state, which makes even communication between school districts complicated.

As quoted in a recent Denver Post article, Randy Boyer, executive director of the San Juan Board of Cooperative Educational Services, says, "The speed is what melts down. We've been able to manage in some schools.  But it varies from district to district."

To learn more about the digital divide, please see our sources:

EAGLE-Net Alliance will help bridge the digital divide throughout Colorado by delivering secure, high-speed broadband connections to 170 communities.  We are building a network that will offer long-term benefits to many school districts as well as numerous other public institutions such as libraries, health care facilities and city, county, state and federal entities.

We thank you for your support and interest in this project, and look forward to connecting communities across Colorado this year and next.

Have a great September and enjoy the cooler fall weather to come.

Sincerely,

Dr. Randy Zila

CEO

Progress Report

Our crews are busy throughout the state and we're making progress in the Northeast, Western Slope, San Luis valley and the I-25 corridor.  We currently have over 1000 miles of network construction and installation in progress across the state. When the construction is complete, it will bring the EAGLE-Net network to slightly over 3,000 miles of infrastructure.

Are we coming to your town?  Please check our website for current and future construction dates and locations!

Did You Know?

Did you Know? An IRU (Indefeasible Right of Use) is essentially a long term lease of two or more strands of fiber optic cable within an existing cable.  This agreement grants the recipient exclusive rights to use these specific fiber optic strands for their network.  Typically, these agreements are for the depreciable life of the fiber optic installation, and are commonly executed for 20 years.

Community Outreach

Government Roadshow:

The EAGLE-Net government roadshow continues and is now in its second round.  Team members from communications and business development are currently traveling the state meeting with various local, state and federal officials, as well as other organizations, agencies, and administrations to share information about the project and its progress.

Thus far we have met with representatives from the offices of Senator Udall, Senator Bennet, Representative DeGette, Representative Coffman, Representative Gardner, Representative Perlmutter, Representative Tipton and Representative Polis.  The EAGLE-Net team has also visited DoLA, various city councils, Local Technology Planning Teams, and other community organizations such at economic development groups.  As you are reading this update, we are finishing our regional tour of the southwest part of the state.

All of these relationships are essential to the continued growth and completion of our project.  We are happy to share the EAGLE-Net mission which states that we are "...a Colorado intergovernmental entity which operates a cost-sharing cooperative that delivers a carrier quality broadband network to 170 communities across the state.  With this sustainable network, EAGLE-Net will be able to better connect education, libraries, government and health care facilities using middle mile services which also provide access to advanced research and education networks."

The roadshow continues to be a success and we are glad to have met so many wonderful people working to better Colorado, and look forward to visiting other regions in the weeks and months ahead.

Website:

The EAGLE-Net website is a great tool to follow the progress of our project.  We have a dedicated staff who maintains the site and adds new information on a daily basis.  As our company evolves, we also continue to update all of our community outreach materials, so everyone has access to the latest information.  Here are a few of the latest updates available online:

  • Check out our August Snapshot for information on how EAGLE-Net is providing communities access to an affordable broadband network, staying on track and budget to meet our NTIA spend requirements, and the latest jobs created by our efforts.
  • We have also provided an updated Fact Sheet to better explain our statewide network and the BTOP grant itself.
  • Our latest FAQ sheet helps to answer many of the questions surrounding EAGLE-Net, and gives more in depth information about the services we provide and our sustainability after the grant is over in August 2013.

Silverton School District Grand Re-Opening

The Silverton School District is celebrating the re-opening of their newly restored school and gym on Friday, September 21, from 10:00-2:00.  The $11.8 million project, which has included funding from BEST, DOLA, the State Historic Fund, and local mil levy support, has successfully merged the historic restoration of a century old school building with modern technology, flexible learning spaces, and energy efficiency structures, and state of the art 21st Century Classrooms.

The two year restoration project brings the K-12 school fully into the 21st Century with a strong focus on technology and 21st Century Learning.  In anticipation of the Summer 2013 Fiber Optic Build to Silverton, through the EAGLE-Net Grant, the 101 year old school has been fully wired and equipped to support high speed fiber optic access throughout the school. The planned activities on September 21 include student led tours, a community picnic, and a short ceremony to celebrate the new spaces.  All activities will be held at 1160 Snowden Street in Silverton.  The public is invited to attend.
