Community Outreach Update

June 2012

Message from the CEO

RandyZila

As summer begins, and you enjoy warm weather and family vacations, we are taking advantage of the summer season to ramp up construction efforts throughout the state in order to meet our established goals.  As we work to connect over 230 community anchor institutions, it continues to amaze me that the Internet and its users continue to grow at a rapid pace.

A recent article by Cisco states that there are currently around 10.3 billion Internet Protocol connections worldwide, and this number will increase to 18.9 billion by 2016.  That is the equivalent of 2.5 network connections for each person on the earth.  This increase is due largely to the greater use of tablets, mobile phones, and other smart devices, and it showcases the important need for increased connectivity.

Growing even faster than network connections, total IP traffic is likely to increase almost fourfold by 2016 to approximately 110 exabytes per month (1 exabyte equals 1,000,000,000 gigabytes).  Mobile Internet traffic is forecasted to increase 18-fold by 2016 as well, with approximately 10.8 exabytes per month.  Read the entire article...

These statistics solidify my sense of pride that EAGLE-Net is part of such an important and relevant industry, and while Colorado may be small in scale to the worldwide Internet community, I am happy to be a part of this growth in such a great place.

Please feel free to contact us at any time and check the Cone Zone! box on the homepage to follow our construction progress and see the scheduled area builds.

Thank you again for your continued support and interest in EAGLE-Net.  Wishing you a wonderful and safe summer!

Dr. Randy Zila

Progress Report

As our construction season swings into full speed, we are making great strides across Colorado in building the EAGLE-Net network.

In May, we broke ground and started construction on the first leg of our Highway 160 fiber build from Walsenburg to Durango.  We also broke ground on lateral fiber builds connecting community anchor locations in Southwest Colorado and Colorado Springs.  Construction of lateral fiber builds will start soon in Northeast Colorado and Denver.  On our I-25 North build (from 120th & I-25 to Cheyenne, Wy.), we have several boring crews and a plowing crew that are currently installing conduit.

Crews are being added to the project every week and we anticipate there will be 25-35 crews in the field at the height of the construction season this summer.  We currently have over 800 miles of fiber construction under contract and plan to award another 200 miles of construction soon.  When the current construction is complete, it will bring the EAGLE-Net network to slightly over 3,000 miles of infrastructure.

We also continue to work on designs, procurements, permits, and plans for construction for additional locations throughout the State.  Stay tuned to the EAGLE-Net website for construction updates.

Community Outreach

At EAGLE-Net, we continue to increase our public relations, brand awareness and business development through community outreach efforts.

Government Roadshow:

The mission of our government roadshow is to educate and inform elected officials at all levels from federal offices to local communities about the BTOP grant and the EAGLE-Net project status.  As this is a mighty undertaking, we have broken it up into phases to monitor our progress and measure our success.

Phase I of the government roadshow is complete with visits to all federal delegation offices.  In May, EAGLE-Net met with the offices of Representative Mike Coffman and Representative Doug Lamborn, and completed a tour of the Southern Colorado Congressional offices of Representative Scott Tipton, Senator Michael Bennet, and Senator Mark Udall.

Phase II currently continues as we meet with Colorado elected officials at the state level along with organizations, agencies and administrations that represent state, county and municipal groups. To date, we have met with State Senator Gail Schwartz, State Senator Mike Johnston, and State Senator Greg Brophy and plan to reach other elected officials this summer and fall.  Visits have also been made to the Colorado Department of Local Affairs (DOLA), Colorado Counties Inc. (CCI), and the Special District Associations (SDA).

Phase III is set to begin this summer with a focus on regional government tours.  With EAGLE-Net management accompanying our Regional Community Representatives in these areas, we look forward to building and extending relationships throughout the state.

The work doesn't stop after the initial visit!  All relationships are being maintained through outgoing communication and one-on-one interactions, including a monthly phone call for all state and federal officials.  EAGLE-Net is excited that the government roadshow continues to be a success and we have enjoyed meeting many of the key stakeholders in the State of Colorado.
