News from The Billfish Foundation
Hasta luego Elliott Stark! Elliott has taken a position with the West Coast Fishing Club in Panama! Congratulations Elliott. We wish you the best of luck. Andrew Cox will continue to work closely with the Club in Elliott's place. Andrew has worked with the Club over the last few months facilitating the Socioeconomic Importance of Sportfishing in the Gulf of Mexico Survey.
Survey Results - Socioeconomic Importance of Sportfishing in the Gulf of Mexico. The primary focus of the study was to estimate the willingness of anglers to pay to "raise" billfish in the Gulf of Mexico and in return use these values as a means to put a dollar sign on the prized resource. Utilizing a socioeconomic model, it was determined that members of the Club were willing to pay $2,900 to raise a blue marlin, $1,060 to raise a sailfish and $645 to raise a white marlin in non-tournament situations. The values generated in this study demonstrate the significance of a healthy billfish fishery in the Gulf of Mexico and further demonstrate to fisheries managers and government officials that billfish sportfishing is very important for the economies of coastal communities in the Gulf. Visit www.billfish.org to keep up to date with other TBF activities.
Update: National Marine Fisheries Service In-Season Actions on Bluefin Tuna - On April 7, 2012, the NMFS is taking two actions regarding the recreational Atlantic Bluefin Tuna (BFT) Angling category fishery: (1) There will be a closure of the southern area trophy BFT fishery until December 31, 2012. The northern fishery will remain open to one large, medium or giant BFT per vessel in the angling category. (2) There is also an adjustment of the daily retention limit that applies to the HMS Charter/Headboat Category when fishing recreationally. For full details, Click Here.
