"Conservation Update: The Inside Line", written by Sam White, In the Bite Magazine

The Billfish Foundation, founded in 1986 by the late Winthrop Rockefeller and a group of forward-thinking billfish enthusiasts, developed their signature program - billfish tagging - in 1990.  Since that time the program has grown to become the largest international billfish tagging program in the world.  In addition to the tagging, TBF is also active in several areas where fisheries management decisions are made, including ICCAT (the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas, the worldwide body that legislates much of what happens to the stocks of tuna and billfish in the Atlantic Ocean).  According to TBF President Ellen Peel, the organization will fight to maintain the stringent regulations against the commercial landing of marlin species by longliners at the upcoming ICCAT meeting in November.

The National Marine Fisheries Service is attempting to amend the Highly Migratory Species Span to authorize more Fish Aggregating Devices in U.S. waters and the Caribbean Sea.  While on the surface, FADs seem like a good idea; in reality, they congregate gamefish into a very small area allowing commercial boats to wrap up large schools in one set.  TBF is currently working with anglers in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands to resolve these issues.

Atlantic Billfish Recreational Landings Update, 3rd Quarter, 2011

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has compiled the reported number of Atlantic Blue Marlin, White Marlin and Roundscale Spearfish caught as of September 30th.  An estimated 69 fish have been reported caught by anglers and tournament landings and by the Recreational Billfish Survey (RBS), which is well under the maximum of 250 combined fish allowed each year.

Thanks to your contributions, the Houston Big Game Fishing Club was recently recognized at the Billfish Foundation's Annual Awards Banquet for the Club's commitment to conservation!
