Greetings!
Last Summer, returning to the United States from Uganda, Africa, I knew I would be going back the following year to the country I had fallen in love with. I never imagined that I would be leading the team. Since November of 2010, Africa 2011 has been in the making. A small, yet determined team made up of four others: Ali Garrett, Hayden Paulsen, Chris Baum, and Mikki Proffitt- our adult chaperone. We will be embarking on this exciting journey to Jinja, Uganda on July 18th and returning August 1st.

Africa 2011 Team

This past weekend was our first real "team" experience as, Mikki, flew from Oregon to visit the four youth she will be working with in Uganda and for all of us to have a team fundraiser. Making $1,000 our yard sale/car wash was a total success! As the trip is quickly approaching, last minute details are being settled, nerves, excitement, and a sense of adventure is setting in on all of us.
We will be offering our assistance mainly at Rock of Ages but will also be visiting hospitals, a boys home, orphanages, and all of the people I was so blessed to develop relationships with during my trip last year. As the pile of aid items and gifts for others continues to grow in the ever present clump that has been in the corner of my room since last year, the joy and anticipation in my heart is beginning to overflow. There is nothing I look forward to more than the hugs and laughter of the children whose hands have come to cradle my heart and the fullness of knowing we are making a difference in their lives.
Below, in thier own words are some thoughts from the rest of the team.
Ali Garrett "I've always had a passion for helping others but after seeing Ariane go to Uganda, it really inspired me and helped me push towards my goal of going as well. Through this trip I would like to strengthen my relationship with God and make a difference in someone else's life." Hayden Paulsen "I want to go to Uganda to experience the true scale of poverty. Sure, you can watch movies and can hear stories, but that doesn't do it justice. I want to experience the world, not just my cushy life. I hope to change my "take it for granted, buy all the time" lifestyle. Really, do I need a yearly refresh of my Apple products?" Chris Baum "Everyone loves a good adventure. Though the reason I wanted to go to Uganda is more than just for the adventure but the lifelong lessons I may learn, not to mention the experiences I will have that will affect me the rest of my life and that I will be able to share with others. Other than learning for myself I also want to be a part of the experience of helping in a big way and making a difference in the world by putting a smile in the hearts of people one at a time. The world is full of lessons just waiting to be explored." Mikki Proffitt "As a counselor for over 15 years, I have walked with "at risk" youth and their families. Believing wholeheartedly that I have been called and purposed to creatively facilitate opportunities of change, understanding that it truly is in the journey that change does occur. Two years ago I created a group of 5 "at risk" teenage girls, we called our team Hands of Hope. Our vision and goal was to raise enough money to travel to Jinja, Uganda and join Next Generation Ministries in service to the people of Uganda. Today I have been asked to join another group of amazing teens, this time as part of Hands4Uganda. What an honor this is as we prepare to return to Jinja. With each trip I am seeing with more clarity that part of my purpose and calling is to come alongside the youth of today and simply support them as they step into their own destiny."

Shoes!
As the Africa 2011 team heads to Uganda in July, the team is

taking one pair of shoes for each child at Rock of Ages School. Last year Ariane Drake made collecting shoes for the Africa 2010 team to take to the children of ROA, her main priority. Hands4Uganda is committed to keeping this tradition going and we are helping Ariane and the Africa 2011 team collect shoes for this year's trip. To get the community involved and to ensure a fitted pair of shoes for each child Hands4Uganda has organized "Shoe Trees" at various church locations. The idea of a "Shoe Tree" is very similar to that of the Christmas "Angle Tree". Each child from ROA will have their picture and shoe size placed on a card. These cards will then be tied to a tree in the front foyer of the participating churches. Those willing to help can pick the child of their choice and hit the shoe store! If you are currently sponsoring a child and would like to participate in the shoe tree, please email syd@hands4uganda.org for your sponsored child's correct shoe size.
For more information, and to donate money in lieu of shoes click here to go to our web site.

Child of the Month - Fahad Mwebe
Ok...anyone who was on the Africa 2010 team knows what a character this boy is! He kept the team laughing with his antics and bravado! His smile alone is infectious!
Recently, Fahad, who lives with his parents, broke his hand after falling out of a mango tree. His younger brother, who was with him, got scared and left for home. Fearing a spanking, he didn't tell his parents about Fahad. After several hours went by, and Fahad failed to turn up, the whole village went on a search for him. He was found crying under the tree.
Fahad is now back in school after being out for two months. His hand is healing but but he needs treatment that is only available in Kampala, A 2-3 hour drive away and the money is not available. The cost for the treatments is about $100.
Fahad is not yet sponsored. You can sponsor him for just $20 a month. Learn how by going to our Hands4Uganda Website now.
In you are unable to sponsor Fahad, please consider a gift to help cover his medical costs!
Please contact Syd if you are interested in sponsoring another Rock of Ages Child.
FYI....Queen Kulunzizi, the child we highlighted last month is still awaiting a sponsor.

Teacher Highlight
Story by Abdu Wasswa Irene Kauma is 20 years old. She is the class teacher for primary 2. Her dad died when she was in primary 7 and shortly after her mom got married to another man. Her mom decided to send her kids, including Irene, to live with grandparents because her step dad didn't like them and it was her grandfather who was paying school fees. After only a year, her grandfather died and Irene lost hope of continuing with her education. At this time life was really hard for her. Fortunately, one her Aunts took her in and she started attending another school. In 2008 her Aunt's husband, who was helping with school fees also died. But luckily she had just finished her high school and she was attending a college to train as a teacher. With no-one helping her with school fees, she started a small business of buying tomatoes, cabbages, onions and selling them in the market during holidays, which is how she manged to complete her training. Now her vision is to continue her education and obtain a degree. You can help support the Rock of Ages teachers but clicking here and going to our web site to make a donation. Specify that your donation is to be used for the teachers or a particular teacher. |

Send a gift to your child!
The highlight of ALL our outreach efforts is hand delivery of packages to the kids from their sponsors. In July, a group from Idaho will be going to Uganda, and we are planning to send with them, a one gallon zip lock bag filled with goodies for each child attending Rock of Ages.
Sponsors, this an opportunity to make a personal connection with your child! Since not all the children are sponsored, others are invited to help as well. Please, only one bag per child and keep it as light as possible. See the delight in the faces of the kids who received gifts from thier sponsors last June!

You can send the bags to our address (H4U, 3550 Johnny Crk Rd, Pocatello, ID 83204) or contact syd@hands4uganda.org to arrange drop off pick up. We need to have them by July 12. See below for items that can and cannot be sent.
