Sarah's Note: Feeding Back

Married to a sound engineer as I am and working in a sometime music venue as I do, I probably think about "feedback" more than most. I imagine, though, I'm not the only one who feels thatthat the word is overused. From advertisers saying they'd love your "feedback", to your friends giving you "feedback" on your outfit, it's a word that can mask all sorts of things under the guise of being helpful

But as it turns out, the word is not just overused, but misunderstood.
The defining characteristic of feedback is not the giving of one's opinion, but the behavior/process modification that results:

feedˇback/ˈfēdˌbak/  The return of a portion of the output of a process or system to the input, especially when used to maintain performance or to control a system or process.

Imagine what could happen if every time we gave or received feedback, we actually stuck to the true definition of the word-only gave responses desgined to be constructive, and really took what we heard and integrated it practically into our work.

I, for one, am going to try.

Sarah

"Put us in a blender and you get a . . .
 Girlyman."
Even with Girlyman's roster of superstar friends and supporters, including Emily Saliers and Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls, and Dar Williams, and great reviews ( The Village Voice calls their lyric-driven folk-pop and complex harmonies "really good, really unexpected, and really different."), the group's path has not been easy, as Doris Muramatsu, a founding member of the band, was diagnosed with leukemia in late 2010. Their most recent album, Supernova, is a tribute to this experience. "It turns out that while [a supernova] is a dying star, it also gives birth to new stars."

The band's name is a signifier for their "annoyance with traditional gender roles" and is a celebration of their personal and collective uniqueness.

We can't wait to see them in all their unique glory on our stage. Check out this clip--one warning: once you start listening, you won't want to stop!

New program for teens coming soon!
We are really excited about a new program we have in development with acting teacher and coach Rachel Barrer Weitner right now. Part theater institute, part peer mentorship, and part creative exploration, this program will be a wholly unlike anything else around! More to come!

Some of our recent feedback!
Check out this great review we got on Loosecubes, a really cool site that connects individual workers with co-working spaces.

"I have to say that for me for style, size, amenities and cool factor this place is beyond awesome.

One of the founders of The Purple Crayon, Adel, was kind and attentive and clearly is so vested in the space. I was in awe of what he is trying to accomplish for telecommuting and co-working. It's beyond just office space, The Purple Crayon is trying to make itself into an livable, multi-use, think-tank space. They have versatile types of spaces to work and meet in.

This co-working space is about 18 minutes from NYC (Harlem) or 25 minutes from Grand Central Station taking the Metro North. It's a short walk from the train to the Purple Crayon. Additionally it's situated in the quaint town of Hastings on the Hudson. Well worth the small and different upstate-ish commute. Lots of cute shops and places to eat.

Here is the shocker, they currently have "hot spots" slots for monthly (desk) rental at $40 dollars. Yep $40 dollars. Check them out. Try it, trust me, you will love it."

And remember The Master Juggler Retreat in last month's newsletter? Here's what they had to say:

"Holding our Master Juggler retreat for foundation executive directors at The Purple Crayon was just ideal.  Only a half hour from New York City, our participants felt like they were truly at a retreat-away from it all-and the beautiful and inspiring space added a great deal to the experience.  The facility offered everything we needed, from comfortable break-out space to nearby hikes to personal recommendations for great local caterers. Our participants loved it, and so did we!"
