A Grammy-nominated... Peacekeeper??
Cheick Hamala Diabate is a sought-after lecturer, storyteller and performer of the n'goni, a West African plucked lute that is the long-forgotten ancestor of the American banjo. He was also born into the role of griot, a traditional Malian leader. A griot is a truth-teller and a peacekeeper, so knowledgeable about history that they are uniquely qualified to point the way forward.
But don't let the gravitas mislead you - all that wisdom comes to the stage in the form of a fantastically exciting sound. Nominated for a Grammy in 2007, Cheick Hamala has performed at eminent venues in the United States: The Smithsonian Institute, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Fest. Accompanied by his full band, Cheick Hamala offers an extraordinarily fun and danceable night out!

Dar Williams Brings Beautiful Music, Inspiration, and Good Wishes
The show last month with celebrated singer-songwriter, Dar Williams, was everything we aim for a concert in our space to be: joyful and transcendent, with rich sound and a fabulous audience. And we especially loved the surprise of Dar's reaction to The Inc, our shared workspace - evidently she's been wanting and talking to people about having "something like this" in the town in which she lives.
As she put it on stage that night, "I'm very pleased that [The Purple Crayon] is here. There's a lot of fomenting stuff... I love places like this. They change things." It was a mutual admiration society, as we were completely inspired, as always, by Dar's incredible talent and her passion for social good. Keep checking the Live!@TPC website for amazing new shows, like this one, being added regularly to our concert line-up.

Get on Board!
If you are excited about the live concerts, workshops, and opportunities The Purple Crayon is offering, and are proud to have it in your community, then perhaps you'd like to a bigger part of making it successful! There are many ways to take part, from forwarding events to your friends or spreading flyers, to more specific expert service like PR or grant-writing... Be it with time, effort, energy, or skill, we could use your help!
We are also looking for a few teenage "interns" to help for a few hours each week with social media, program development, publicity and general support.
Thanks, everyone!

The Purple Crayon Diary
"..what a fantastic evening it was to see Dar Williams in Hastings... she is one of my favorites and I loved seeing her in such a wonderful and intimate location. The Purple Crayon was so nice - warm and relaxing and so perfect for that setting. I really enjoyed myself as did all the folks I came with - wishing you lots of success!" --Suzi Brunenavs
