Jazz Pioneers: The Two Rivers Ensemble
Two Rivers ensemble
Live! At the Purple Crayon is thrilled to bring the celebrated Two Rivers Ensemble to our stage for their first ever performance in Westchester! The sextet is led by trumpeter Amir ElSaffar, described by All About Jazz as "a virtuoso on the horn, but also an imaginative bandleader, expanding the vocabulary of the trumpet and at the same time the modern jazz ensemble." The sophisticated ensemble has played around the country and New York City, but this is your chance to travel the world and stay local at the same time with this haunting and provocative fusion of world music with modern jazz.

"This music celebrates the ability of great musicians to imagine unfamiliar territory, and navigate it in a way that makes for both intuitive understanding and compelling listening."

John Gorka Concert: "one of his best ever"!
At the beginning of this month we had the pleasure of presenting esteemed folk singer-songwriter John Gorka for the first performance of our Spring calendar, and it was truly a fantastic show! The lovely Julia Joseph opened the night with her rich, honey-hued voice. Then John Gorka treated us to a long set of his songs, spanning the history of his thirty-year career. John himself was funny, self-deprecating and ribald, peppering his set with stories as he moved back and forth between guitar and piano. But of course it was the music that really stood out; moving and joyful, every note rich and every word clear, the concert really was - as promised - an incredible experience. Long-time fans of John's in the audience told us afterwards that it was his best performance ever, and attendees from around the tri-state exclaimed about the amazing sound quality and intimacy of The Purple Crayon as a live music venue. All in all, a great kick-off to the season - more Live! at the Purple Crayon to come!

Fresh off a Spring on the Honkytonk Heartbreakers Tour, as well as opening for Loretta Lynn back in March, the charismatic Sweetback Sisters will be hitting our stage in May with what the Village Voice calls their "twisted blend of vintage twang." We guarantee you'll have a rollicking good time!
