From the Station Manager - Berthold Reimers
Berthold Reimers

I would like to welcome Chris Hatzis, our new Program Director who is beginning at the station on June 1. I would also, at this time, like to thank Tony Bates, the Interim Program Director, for his hard work and commitment to WBAI. Tony lead us to meet all of our fund drive goals, brought in the voices of Occupy Wall Street as well as many popular new shows. He will leave the station as of June 15, and will be missed by many.

Chris Hatzis

From Chris Hatzis:

Hello everyone... I am very much looking forward to working at WBAI. I come from 20+ years of working in listener-supportedpublic radio in Australia, and, more recently, online radio here in New York. It's going to take a short while to get settled in and familiar with everyone, so in return I will allow a sanctioned week or so of "Crikey/Croc Hunter/Crocodile Dundee" jokes with no retaliation.

Seriously, though, I am very happy to be a part of the WBAI team. The station has an incredible amount of goodwill in the city of New York and a proud, even enviable history in spite of the hardships and internal/external struggles of maintaining a listener-supported independent media entity year after year. It's not easy; we know this all too well. It comes with the territory. But I'm here to help. I look forward to being part of the life of and conversation at WBAI.

The "FRENCH CONNECTION" film series features a selection of films that explore stories of people of color in France. • June 12, Tuesday, 7:30pm-9pm - NO NUKES 30th ANNIVERSARY RADIO DEMONSTRATION. Location:Tompkins Sq. Park. During the Vietnam war, many rallies and marches were covered ONLY by WBAI and in some cases, marchers were carrying radios tuned to 99.5FM because the speakers and musicians for the march were in the WBAI studio rather than on a stage. June 12 is the 30th anniversary of the largest demonstration in New York City history, 1.2 million people marching and rallying for nuclear disarmament.  There were many primary organizers and many secondary organizers and via the NYC SHAD Alliance, Ken Gale of WBAI's Eco-Logic was one of the latter. Organized by 3.11 Action NYC and the Occupy Wall St. Environmental Solidarity Working Group. Chris Williams, Alice Slater and Minori Nakamura will be in the WBAI studio on Eco-Logic, which is hosted by Ken Gale.  They will be making connections between nuclear power and nuclear weapons.  There will be live music by the NYC Metro Raging Grannies, recorded music by many others and energy & chants from the march itself. Bring your radio!

  • June 16 +17, Saturday + Sunday 11am-7pm - LIVE BROADCAST: Clearwater's Great Hudson River Revival will feature a number of superb storytellers and family-oriented entertainers as well as juried crafts, the Green Living Expo, the Working Waterfront with small boat exhibits and rides, environmental education displays and exhibits, and the Circle of Song where audience participation is the focus. Inspired by Pete Seeger's desire to clean up the river over forty years ago, the Great Hudson River Revival initially helped raise the funds to build the sloop Clearwater, which has since become a world-renowned floating classroom and a symbol of effective grassroots action. Today, Hudson River Sloop Clearwater is a non-profit organization that sails at the forefront of the nation's environmental challenges. The revenue raised by the Revival goes to support Clearwater's numerous educational programs and its work toward environmental and social justice-as well as keeping the Clearwater afloat. Entertainers include: Ani DiFranco, Martin Sexton, Bla Fleck, Dawes Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Arlo Guthrie & The Guthrie Family, Josh Ritter & The Royal City Band, Joan Osborne & The Holmes Brothers, Loudon Wainwright III, Toshi Reagon, Jill Sobule and scores of others.

Host Highlight: Jack Dourakos and the AF Sessions

Jack Dourakos

Jack Dourakos of The Artsy Fartsy Show (Tuesdays 2-3pm) is a first generation Greek-American from Baltimore. He is a graduate of NYU, where he hosted his first radio show on WNYU in 1993. He has been touring with bands since the early 90's with colleagues such as Mosest Mouse, TV On The Radio, Death Cab For Cutie, Interpol, The Dap Kings, Harvey Danger, Pretty Girls Make Graves, & Freelance Whales. Jack's current rock outfit, Poison Ivy League, is a fixture on the local music scene. Doukaros has an in-depth knowledge of not only the music business but its creative process. His unique ear for exceptional music is utilized as the curator of AF Sessions, one of the few live sessions in America, featuring selected bands that will emerge on the national spectrum.

Memorable features by Jack on the Artsy Fartsy Show: Rarely interviewed, Julia Cameron, Matisyahu, Black 47, Cowboys and Aliens Comic Book Co-Writer, Fred Van Lente, "A Spot of Culture" entitled the Marriage of the Band.

The Artsy Fartsy Show Music Contributor and AF Sessions Curator, Jack Dourakos sat down with WBAI to talk about his experience being a part of the WBAI Family and the upcoming AF Sessions concert.

WBAI: How would you describe your experience thus far at WBAI? Who have your favorite interviews been with?

Jack:
Both Julia Cameron interviews are my favorite. She's my hero and I consider her the Patron Saint of The Artsy Fartsy Show. Rev Jen was great one of the most fun guests we've had - she was hilarious. It was cool to meet Jesse Eisenberg. I enjoyed interviewing the lead singer of Black 47. Sometimes interviewing someone is a pleasure. He was one of the interviews that stick out because he made it entertaining for himself and us. And not to forget, sculptor Phillip Theis (former WWF wrestler Damien Demento) who almost started a fight. Just kidding It was a great interview - it had a confrontation which doesn't often happen on the Artsy Fartsy Show but it made for great entertaining radio.

WBAI: You are the curator of AF Sessions. What is AF Sessions?

Jack: The idea behind AF Sessions was inspired by my all-time radio hero the late, John Peel who was known for his eclectic taste in music. He was one of the first to play psychedelic rock, progressive music. He exposed people to reggae, punk, indie rock, hardcore, even death metal and dance music. So Peel Session on BBC Radio 1 was an exclusive recording session in the studio of 4 songs that were the first national exposure for the bands. His taste was impeccable -- all my favorite bands did a Peel Session -- and everyone wanted to hear the Peel Session. I want to find up-and-coming bands, have them play a few songs and though fans can  get the band's album, the AF Sessions' recording is a unique version of the song.

WBAI: Why move AF Sessions out of the WBAI performance studio?

Jack: It was difficult to get the bands and audiences into the studio on a weekday afternoon. We wanted to make sure that we are most accessible to our audience. So we are now doing AF Sessions at The Tank NYC in Times Square. It's going to be at night -- when musicians are awake. We select three bands to perform quarterly and we will still play a portion of the Session during the Artsy Fartsy Show once a month. So it's going to be more conducive to both those who want to participate with us live and those who want to participate by listening on-air.

WBAI has many friends besides our listeners. Many organizations and institutions have now been officially partnered with the station- which benefits all involved. We fulfill our mission to "educate, promote, and aid creative activities which serve the cultural welfare of diverse communities in New York City" by partnering with other complimentary not-for-profit organizations. Partnership endeavors can include, but are not limited to, providing live airing of partner's events, public service announcements, listing of events in our monthly e-Newsletter, recording and archiving of performances, space for meetings, links on our website, as well as opportunities for experimental use of the radio and other disciplines.

WBAI partners are requested to display the WBAI logo as a link on their website (noted as "Media Sponsor") as well as include the logo on event materials that WBAI supports with activities as noted above.
