Tech Tip # 14 It's getting cold out did you remember to check your coolant?
This time of the year its important you have your coolant checked for its freezing point and for condition. Freezing point is very important!
A frozen system will cause multiple problems including:
*Heater not heating properly or at all
*Overheating because of circulation problems
and, of course
If it freezes solid enough...
*You can break cylinder heads or the engine block among other items in the system!
How do I test my system?
Option #1: There are different testers on the market, you can use the float style that you count the balls to determine freezing point and those are fine to use. Option #2: Test strips are another style and I would recommend using every other year as they test the reserve alkalinity and the ph qualities of the the coolant. or
Option #3: Call your friends at Cassill Motors Service Department for an appointment! 319-396-2698
Why am I concerned of the alkalinity and ph?
They are there as the anticorrosion and lubrication the cooling system needs to give maximum life and reduce break downs.
Now the most important part of this whole procedure
NEVER OPEN THE COOLING SYSTEM when HOT without properly releasing the pressure in the system first. Failure to do this WILL result in very severe burns.
