Question: Winter looks like its over and what component of your vehicle gets overlooked and the most abused in the winter?
Answer: Your transmission
Maybe you plow snow, pull snowmobile trailers..... or maybe you just got stuck in that heavy deep snow we got this year. Did you know that transmission fluid looses its lubricating quality after it reaches 200 degrees?
How do I know and what should I do?
If you have 30,000 miles since the last transmission SERVICE you should get it SERVICED. If you pull trailers or plow snow its best to put a temperature gauge on the transmission so you can monitor its temperature when using it in hard situations.
Why the emphasis on SERVICE instead of flushing?
Your transmission has very small passages the fluid has to pass through to make everything work properly. The filtration system is very important - almost even more important than the engine oil filtration. So where is the transmission filter located? Inside the transmission - and that is why I don't like or recommend just getting the fluid FLUSHED, you need to replace the filter also.
So have your transmisson serviced:
- every 30,000 miles for normal use
- 20,000 for extreme use
- or (with a gauge installed in the vehicle) service after 200 degrees has been reached
