Winter Driving Q and A
How do I know if I have anti-lock brakes, and how do they work?
Anti-lock brakes, or ABS, can be identified by an amber light on the dash when first turning key to the ON position. Anti-lock brakes work by releasing the pressure to the wheel that is LOCKING UP and lets the other 3 brakes assist in stopping safely - that is the "buzzing, ratcheting" sound you hear when you are in slick conditions, or on loose surfaces. That sound, along with a brake pedal ratcheting feel, are the signs that your ABS system is doing it's job. Don't be alarmed when you feel and hear these symptoms when you are on slick or loose surfaces. Don't let up or "pump" the brake pedal, keep pressure on the brake pedal and let the ABS system do the job it was designed to do - stop you safely.
Is it ok to slip my vehicle into neutral when approaching a corner? With front wheel drive and/or vehicles with ABS brakes it is not necessary to put the vehicle in neutral. In rear wheel drive vehicles with out ABS systems it can help you slow down because it takes the power from the rear wheels that are trying to push you.
Why do some people put weight into the back of their vehicles? Weight is applied to the rear of rear wheel drive vehicles to get extra traction to the rear wheels.
Does my tire pressure affect the way my car drives in the winter? Yes, tire pressure can affect traction. Please consult the specific Tire Manufacturer for their recommendations as some manufactures engineering is different. What should I look for in snow tires, and does Cassill Motors have them? Snow tires or all weather tires come in all styles and brands please consult Dan, Danny or myself (Jay Cassill) for what tire we would recommend for Your specific needs, and yes we sell and install all tires. How can I be best prepared for an accident, what should I do? If you should have an accident make sure FIRST everyone is OK - people ARE more important than ANY vehicle. Cassill Motors has a full service collision center and takes the worry and headaches out of repairing your vehicle, have your vehicle towed to Cassill Motors Body Shop and let Lowell handle the rest. Darrahs towing number is 363-7900, Cassill Motors Body Shop phone number is 396-2698. If you ever have questions please feel free to call me and I would love to answer ANY questions you would have. -JAY CASSILL

| October Recipe - Slithering Snakewich (for Jay) |
1 16-ounce loaf frozen bread dough, thawed
4 ounces sliced mozzarella cheese, diagonally cut in half
4 ounces sliced cheddar cheese, diagonally cut in half
1 3.5-ounce package sliced pepperoni
1 8-ounce can pizza sauce
1/2 cup red, green, and/or yellow sweet pepper strips
1 strip roasted red sweet pepper
2 pimiento-stuffed olives
Directions 1. Place thawed bread dough on a lightly floured surface. Roll into a 22-inch long rope. Place on a large greased baking sheet forming a "snaky S" shape. Let rise in a warm place for 1-1/2 to 2 hours or until double in size. Bake in a 350F oven for 20 minutes or until lightly browned and bread sounds hollow when lightly tapped. Remove from baking sheet to a wire rack. Cool to room temperature.
2. Hollow out the center portion of the loaf about 1-inch deep and 1-1/2-inches wide, leaving about 2-inches on each end of the loaf. Layer cheeses down the center of loaf, pressing cheese slices down into the hollowed portion of the loaf. In a medium bowl, stir together the pepperoni and pizza sauce. Spoon atop the cheese. Top with the strips of sweet pepper. Place on a greased baking sheet and bake in 350F oven for 15 to 20 minutes or until heated through and cheese is melted.
3. Make a slit in the front of the loaf and insert a roasted red pepper strip for a tongue; insert two pimento stuffed olives with toothpicks for eyes. Makes 8 servings. |
