7 ways to SAVE on Gas this month!

It happens every year.  Just in time for summer travel, prices at the pump start going up.  Here are some simple tips to save you some green this summer...

1. Keep it Steady  Sounds simple, but over aggressive driving can quickly reduce your gas mileage.  Take caution to accelerate and brake at a steady rate and you can reduce your mileage dramatically.

2. Keep the right Pressure  Improperly inflated tires will decrease your gas mileage by almost 4%. Properly inflated tires are not just more efficient -- they'll last longer, too.

3. Watch your speed  In addition to the cost of the ticket, the efficiency of your vehicle decreases for most cars over 60 mph.  Admittedly "slower" isn't in the Cassill vocabulary, but in the discussion of gas mileage it is great advice! J

4. Regular Maintenance  Remember, you are driving a mechanical object.  Change oil regularly, replace fluid levels, keep the engine clean, and stay up-to-date on tune-ups. Fixing major problems, such as a faulty oxygen sensor, can improve your mileage greatly!

5. Small vs Big  Smaller engines need less fuel than larger engines (for example, a 4-cylinder will require less than a V-6 or V-8), and turbochargers can help make up the difference in power. So if you're choosing between a 4-cylinder and a V-6 and gas mileage is an issue, go small.

6. In Town Trips  Remember Grandma planning her "trips to town"?  Of course in a rural setting it was a necessity.  City life offers the convenience of having every store close by, but you may still want to plan your trips like Grandma did.  Several short trips taken from a cold start can use as much as twice the amount of gas as one longer trip made when the engine is warm, according to the Department of Energy.  Combine errands into one trip and save yourself some time and money.

7. Lose the extra cargo  Every additional pound of weight in your car requires more power to propel.  So empty your trunk and back seat of anything you don't absolutely need to carry, take down the bike rack, and remove the trailer when you don't need it.

Beef Kabobs

From: Taste of the South
Servings:
6 kabobs
Total: 4 hrs 20 mins

Ingredients:
1/2 cup salad oil
1/2 cup soy sauce
2 tablespoons apple-cider vinegar
2 small onions, chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
3 tablespoons chopped candied ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
3 pounds rump roast or sirloin-tip roast, cut into 2-x-2-x-1/2 -inch pieces
2 large green bell peppers, cut into chunks
1 large sweet onion, cut into chunks

Directions:
1. In a bowl, combine all ingredients except meat and vegetable chunks.
2. Place meat in a shallow dish. Pour sauce over meat to coat. Cover dish with plastic wrap. Marinate in the refrigerator for 4 hours, or overnight. *tip:  you may want to set aside some of the marinade to use as basting while grilling
3. Preheat grill to Medium (300 to 350 degrees F). If using wooden skewers, soak in water for 5 to 10 minutes.
4. Place meat on skewers, alternating with chunks of bell peppers and onions. Brush kabobs with remaining marinade.
5. Grill kabobs, covered with lid, over direct heat for 10 to 15 minutes per side until desired doneness is reached, turning occasionally and brushing with additional marinade during cooking time. (Do not brush cooked meat with marinade that has come in contact with raw meat. Such marinade should be boiled for at least 1 minute before using on cooked meat.)
