MEET THE ARTIST: Join Alex Israel at 7 PM for an Art Talk about the talk show you've been waiting for...
For AS IT LAYS, Israel interviewed 30 quintessentially Southern Californian characters including Melanie Griffith, Quincy Jones, Oliver Stone, Christina Ricci, and Bret Easton Ellis.
Beyond the din of flashbulbs and paparazzi, Israel's talk show format and style of questioning bring the camera into a focus that levels the mystique of fame to the everyday existentialism of defining the self through Coke vs. Pepsi queries.
A graduate from Yale, Israel also received his MFA from USC in 2010.

ALEX ISRAEL: AS IT LAYS
AUG 3-SEP 29, 2012
Los Angeles-based artist Alex Israel uses Hollywood as a material to produce videos, objects, performances, and installations. AS IT LAYS, 2012 employs the television talk-show format as a platform to produce contemporary portraits.
Creating sets from his own flat and backdrop artworks, Israel has interviewed some of Hollywood's most fascinating personalities in a manner that is uncomfortably blank and stoic.
In each episode, Israel, in the role of TV host, peppers his guest with randomly selected questions. The result is a tour de force of absurdity as celebrities from Marilyn Manson to Rosanna Arquette to Vidal Sassoon respond to questions such as: "Have you ever thrown a party when your parents were out of town?", "What are the key ingredients for your dream salad?", and "Have you ever been arrested?".
AS IT LAYS is the talk show you've been waiting for...and UMOCA is proud to present nearly five hours of this portraiture of celebrity culture. More |

JUL 6-OCT 20, 2012

The cutest dog in the world has come to Salt Lake City!

For 10 years, award-winning documentary photographer Regan worked with Mr. Winkle as her muse. Creating hundreds of photographic tableaux with Mr. Winkle as the star, her images draw influence from 19th century portrait photography and 20th century art practices.More

CHRISTIAN JANKOWSKI: CASTING JESUS
JUN 5-JUL 28, 2012

For nearly two millennia, artists who have depicted Jesus Christ in their work have made difficult decisions about the appearance of the person playing that role. In Casting Jesus (2011), Christian Jankowski allows the viewer to become a fly on the wall, observing a distinguished panel of representatives from the Vatican engage in the process of casting actors for the role of Jesus Christ.
By contrasting the acknowledged earnestness and religious faith of the jurors with a selection process that borrows heavily from pop culture mainstays such as American Idol, Casting Jesus thoughtfully explores the difficulties and absurdities in human efforts to encompass the divine.More |
MARK HEDENGREN: THE INVINCIBILITY FABLE
MAY 4- AUG 18, 2012
