OPENING RECEPTION FOR FINAL LIGHT: V. DOUGLAS SNOW IN RETROSPECT
WEDNESDAY, AUG 31, 2011
5 - 8 PM
Join us on the evening of August 31 for the co-opening of Final Light: V. Douglas Snow in Retrospect, both at the Art Center and at Utah Museum of Fine Arts, which are co-exhibiting the work of Doug Snow. Take TRAX nearly door to door!
Organized by guest curator Frank McEntire, Final Light presents defining works from Snow's career, featuring more than 35 paintings from private and public collections across the West. A painter, printmaker, and professor, Snow lived and worked in Utah's red rock country for over half a century. After studying at Columbia University and the Cranbrook Academy of Art, Snow returned to his home state of Utah to paint Capitol Reef's mountains and mesas. Snow became a nationally recognized artist at the age of 30 when he was featured in Life magazine and his work is included in major collections including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, the Springville Museum of Art, and the Museum of Art at Brigham Young University.

LOOPED: MAGIC AND MYSTICISM
ENDS AUG 27, 2011

The third iteration of Looped in the foyer gallery showcases three prominent contemporary video artists including Turner Prize-winner, Mark Wallinger.
Emilie Halpern uses inventive physical effects to create whimsical tromp l'oeil within digital video, resulting in visual puns and illusions that portray a desire to assert control over the forces of physics, love and nature.
Inspired by her mother and the trends of new-ageism in the Southwest, Shana Moulton has made Whispering Pines, a series of performative videos that explore the culture and pseudo-magic of the self-help industry and the humorous and kitschy mechanisms through which we seek enlightenment and healing.
In The Magic of Things, Mark Wallinger revisits 70s TV classic series Bewitched, edits out all human characters, and stitches together scenes of telekenisis to create a universe in which inanimate objects are constantly moving on their own accord.

To find out, join us for an evening of creative consumption at the Art Center's first edition of Art Nosh; a playful mishmash of art, food, and drink.
