NOT JUST ANOTHER PRETTY FACE:
GALA & AFTERPARTY

SATURDAY, JUN 11, 2011

GALA 6:00 - 9:00 PM

AFTERPARTY 9:30 PM - MIDNIGHT

AfterPartywhite-bar-spacerJoin us as we kick off our 80th Anniversary with the party of the year.  Our 2011 Gala will be a fantastic tented affair at Salt Lake Art Center with delectable food, High West Signature Lemonade, live auction, silent art auction, music and dancing.  Hosted by Chris Vanocur of ABC4.  Black Tie optional.

Attendees will also get a sneak peek at a major new exhibition, Fallen Fruit of Utah, a ground-breaking collaboration between L.A. artist collective Fallen Fruit (who have had their work featured around the world, from LA to Madrid, Chicago to Maastricht), nine major museums throughout the state of Utah, and ordinary residents of our pretty, great state.  Also opening that night, Not Just Another Pretty Face, a collection of more than 40 original commissions by patrons of the Art Center from top contemporary artists with ties to Utah, and the latest iteration of Looped, featuring video explorations of magic and mysticism through the work of artists such as Mark Wallinger, winner of the 2007 Turner Prize.

Come see why many are calling the Art Center "one of the hottest art venues in town!"

There is still a small handful of tables, seats, and AfterParty tickets remaining.  Get yours before they are all gone!

FALLEN FRUIT OF UTAH

FAMILY NIGHT PUBLIC OPENING

MONDAY, JUN 13, 2011, 6:00 PM

Fallen Fruit of Utahwhite space

The Art Center is offering a very special Family Night opening of its newest exhibition, Fallen Fruit of Utah, on Monday, June 13, 2011.  Bring the kids for an evening of exciting activities and explore the story of Utah through its fruit.  This exhibition creates a different kind of history of the pioneer expansion westwards across North America.

From 6:30 - 7:30 PM, guests will be invited to participate in Fruit Stories, a kind of personal biography through fruit, and throughout the evening the Art Center's Department of Youth Education will host a scavenger hunt for all ages.

Fallen Fruit of Utah is a collaboration with museums and individuals around the state about the role of fruit in Utah's history, led by artist collective Fallen Fruit.

"Nor shall you glean your vineyard, nor shall you gather the fallen fruit of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the needy and for the stranger."  Leviticus 19:10.

LOOPED: MAGIC AND MYSTICISM

JUN 1 - JUL 31, 2011

Magic of Thingswhite space

Emilie Halpern uses inventive physical effects to create whimsical tromp l'oeil within digital video, resulting in visual puns and illusions that portray a desire to assert control over the forces of physics, love and nature.

Inspired by her mother and the trends of new-ageism in the Southwest, Shana Moulton has made Whispering Pines, a series of performative videos that explore the culture and pseudo-magic of the self-help industry and the humorous and kitschy mechanisms through which we seek enlightenment and healing.

In The Magic of Things, Mark Wallinger revisits 70s TV classic series Bewitched, edits out all human characters, and stitches together scenes of telekenisis to create a universe in which inanimate objects are constantly moving on their own accord.

The Art Center is pleased to present the third annual Not Just Another Pretty Face exhibition, showcasing work resulting from the Art Center's 2011 Not Just Another Pretty Face Salon commissions.

This program encourages new and existing collectors of contemporary art to commission work from a select group of emerging and established artists. This process strengthens Utah's artistic community by building personal relationships between artists and patrons, while also supporting the Art Center's mission to exhibit engaging contemporary art and provide dynamic educational programming for our community.
