ROBERT FONTENOT: THE PLACE THIS IS

MEMBERS' OPENING: FRI, APRIL 1, 6:00 - 8:00 PM

PUBLIC OPENING: FRI, APRIL 1, 8:00 - 10:00 PM

BEAR LAKE MONSTERwhite-bar-spacer

Robert Fontenot addresses notions of place, history and perception in this engaging mixed media exhibition that includes bread dough renderings of over

100 iconic Utah landmarks and symbols; watercolor portraits of Utah politicians and culturati; and embroidered texts from voices in American history. The works in this show question how psychological and physical distance affect our impressions and recollections of things we have experienced first-hand, and those that have been mediated for us.  Fontenot's meticulously crafted artworks fuse beauty and cynicism to question how and why certain objects and events become memorialized in culture and history.

Attendees at the members' reception will have a special opportunity to meet the artist and have him sign their copy of An Introduction to the Glorious State of UtahMore

Many years ago the tall windows on the north end of the Art Center's Main Gallery were painted black, blocking the public's view into the gallery from the sidewalk. Now, as the Art Center re-imagines its relationship to the community as part of its 80th Anniversary festivities, artist-in-residence Lenka Konopasek will reopen the gallery space to the outside by scraping images and viewing portals into the blackened windows, allowing daylight to enter once again.  Working with the newly exposed rays of light, the artist will also create a three-dimensional installation in the gallery space.

Visitors are encouraged to meet and talk with the artist during open studio hours, and to participate by adding elements to the sculpture while the artist is working.

The Art Truck Rides Again!

Recognized as the best art education program in Utah in 2009, the all-new 337 Project Art Truck brings the very best in contemporary art directly to students from elementary school through college.

In this latest iteration, BYU Art Professor Peter Everett transforms the interior of our old vegetable truck into a stunning multimedia exploration of Utopia, a paradise on earth.  Everett's creation grows from his own childhood associations with freight vans as he recalls his family frequently moving from town to town, always headed for "a better place."

Art Truck visits are accompanied by a teaching guide and a professional educator who will walk students through the experience.   The Art Truck is always FREE.
