SALT LAKE ART CENTER PRESENTS SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL NEW FRONTIER

FRIDAY, JANUARY 21 - FRIDAY, MARCH 25

NEW FRONTIERwhite-bar-spacerHighlighting work that pushes the boundaries of storytelling and the moving image, New Frontier celebrates the convergence of film, art, and new media technologies as a hotbed for cinematic innovation. New Frontier presents media installations, multimedia performances, transmedia experiences, panel discussions, feature films, and more. Salt Lake Art Center presents New Frontier in Salt Lake City for the first time ever. Take One, January 21 - 29, will include five transmedia works from New Frontier, and Take Two, February 4 - March 25, will add seven additional works to the mix.  More details will be available on the Salt Lake Art Center website in early January. The Art Center is buzzing with EVE activities! We are FREE and easy to find (in between the Temple Square Trax stop and the Salt Palace, just outside the paid boundaries of EVE).  So come to sing karaoke, exchange gifts with a stranger, intervene in an image, or offer your New Year's resolutions up for transformation by the crowd, with the results projected onto the face of the Art Center for all to see.

NEW FRONTIER EVENTS


DISCUSSION AND COMIC BOOK SIGNING: LYNN HERSHMAN LEESON ON RAW/WAR

MONDAY, JANUARY 24, 6:30 PM, SIGNING AT 7:30 PM

 

RAW/WARwhite spaceLynn Hershman Leeson employs transmedia storytelling to create a seminal history of the American Feminist Art Movement. Expanding the scope of her documentary !Women Art Revolution, RAW/WAR is a live, user-generated, community-curated video archive that documents the achievements of women artists. RAW/WAR reconceives history as an ongoing project of collaborative authorship where participants enter an interactive environment to upload new material and use Wii-powered virtual flashlights to illuminate invisible histories. RAW /WAR is created by Lynn Hershman Leeson in collaboration with Alexandra Chowaniec, Brian Chirls, and Gian Pablo Villamil.


PERFORMANCE: MYTH AND INFRASTRUCTURE BY MIWA MATREYEK

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 26, 7:00, 8:00, AND 9:00 PM


Mythwhite spaceBrimming with elevated visions of the ways the human body interacts with its surrounding environment, award-winning animator Miwa Matreyek integrates her own shadow into her whimsical, handcrafted, animated worlds. Her breathtakingly beautiful images mix with dreamy original music sung by Anna Oxygen to create glistening realms of enchantment. Myth and Infrastructure expands the scope of the connections to the environment as a whole.

Three's Company The Dramawhite spaceCapping off the first week of New Frontier's celebration of creativity at the Art Center, join us for an evening with the artist James Franco as he discusses his interpretation and re-presentation of the ultimate pop-culture happy show.  This event is subject to confirmation.  Please visit the Art Center website before attending.

Current SLAC Artist Wins SECA Award from SFMOMA

Go West artist Colter Jacobsen recently won a SECA Award from SFMOMA and was featured in the Fall 2010 issue of The Paris Review.  Jacobsen's work can still be seen at the Art Center through Jan. 8, 2011.  Don't miss it!
