The Lexington Farmers' Market

September 26th, 2012

A huge thanks goes out to, The Lexington Herald Leader for the fantastic write up in this past weekend's paper.  The Herald Leader featured an article on our most recent accomplishment of the American Farm Land Trust, favorite farmers' market contest where we placed #8 nationally and #1 in the state. Read it, here.  We are fortunate to have a local paper which understands the value of these accomplishments and the importance of local food within a community.  Thanks again and a special thanks to all our supporters who made this accomplishment possible with dedicated voting and continual support.  The LFM is fortunate to have such a strong following and support system.

Be sure to stop by market this Saturday to check out Chef Foster and the Sullivan University culinary students.  You never know what deliciousness they will be whipping up, so come on down and see!

September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month.  For more on what you can do to help, visit: www.letsmove.gov.

Apparently I am on a hummus kick with the Pumpkin Rosemary Hummus last week and now this Beet and White Bean Hummus.  I couldn't help not to put this recipe in the newsletter this week after an office neighbor made some. One taste and you'll see why I included it!

Red Beet and White Bean Hummus

Ingredients:

  • 1 medium beet
  • 1 15 oz can white beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 large garlic clove, unpeeled
  • juice of 1/2 lemon (about 1/2 tbsp)
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

2. Wash beet well and place with garlic clove on a sheet of foil. Bring up sides of foil and fold to make a packet leaving room for heat to circulate inside the packet containing the beet and garlic.

3. Bake for 45 minutes or until beet is tender when poked with a knife.

4. Remove skin off of the garlic and the beet (I use a zip lock bag on my hand and slip the skin off so my hand doesn't turn red).

5. Place all the ingredients in a food processor and puree until smooth.

6. Serve.

BLUE MOON FARM***Sustainably Grown***
Madison County

We are so proud of the Lexington Farmers' Market for being voted the #8 favorite market in the COUNTRY!!  Thanks to American Farmland Trust and to all of you who voted!  We've always thought our market is pretty special!  Even the weather celebrated this great news last weekend by giving us an absolutely PERFECT couple of days for market.  Hopefully there will be lots more like that this fall!

Some market farmers had their first frost last weekend, but we were lucky it missed us, so the FRESH CUT  BASILS continue on!  So many of you are buying big bunches to make pesto to freeze......it's like watching the squirrels scurry around collecting nuts for their winter stash!  Folks are stocking their freezers with all kinds of great MEATS for the winter too.....we've got lots of GRASS FINISHED STEAKS, and they're still on sale for 30% off, BURGER, ROASTS....even a whole BEEF TENDERLOIN for a special celebration.  BABY BACK RIBS and other PORK....CHOPS, ROASTS, BACON.....hopefully we'll be back up to speed on the SAUSAGES this week.  They've told us the sausage making machine is finally fixed!  KENTUCKY LAMB....Ground, or Stew Meat.

Homemade GARLIC POWDERS, and PEPPER POWDERS (Paprika, Chipotle, etc), FRESH GARLIC all sorts of ways...by the BULB, BAG or beautiful handmade GARLIC BRAID, on a FOCACCIA or BAGEL or in a GARLIC CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE!!  GARLIC SCAPE PESTO and garlicky (or as Leo would say, "garlicular"!) CHAMPAGNE DRESSING.

We'll have a nice selection of Kenny's KENTUCKY-MADE CHEESES, with a couple for you to sample, some wonderful SOAPS handmade by our friends on Stone Cross Farm, FRESH SHIITAKE and OYSTER MUSHROOMS from Bracken Co, lots of ARTISAN BREAD from Sunrise Bakery, our own FRESH CUT BASIL and ROSEMARY, lots of PEPPERS and EGGPLANT.  We're letting the KALE catch up this week, but it should be back next weekend.

We hope you'll come out and see why LFM is the #1 market in Kentucky and #8 in the nation!  Why not bring a friend who's never been, and make a nice morning of it?  You'll go home with bags and bags of delicious, nutritious food for your family!

Henkle's Herbs and Heirlooms

Jessamine County

If knowing the origin of what you consume is important to you, as it should be, then we are the folks to shop with.  EVERYTHING we offer is started from seed and grown by us just 15 miles away at our farm in Nicholasville.  We opt to use biological controls and to release beneficial insects like lacewings and lady beetles instead of spraying with pesticides that kill honey bees and other beneficial predators to create a pest management system that is friendly to the food we bring to market as well as the environment.

Check out this article about us from last month's Herald Leader at:http://www.kentucky.com/2012/08/03/2283120/integrated-pest-management-works.html

Look for us and our big box truck at the corner of Short and Upper on Saturday and at Southland Drive on Sunday.   All of our offerings are sustainably grown, Kentucky Proud, 100% homegrown, and pesticide free.  We are delighted to inform you that we do not sell anything that we do not grow.

We will have the following:

-Field grown heirloom and hybrid tomatoes, multiple colors

-Multi colored cherry tomato pints

-Assorted hot and sweet peppers

-Beautiful colored bell peppers

-Fresh cut Genovese and Thai Basil

-Fresh cut cilantro

-Eggplant, numerous varieties

-Lots of Roma tomatoes, great for making sauces and salsa

-Our popular uglies but goodies

We look forward to seeing you at the market!

BLEUGRASS CHEVRE
Clark County

The pawpaw season is just about over, so this weekend will probably be the last call for pawpaw sorbet, and we will be at the SUNDAY market only.  It has been a lot of fun experiencing customer's reactions as they taste pawpaws for the first time, but we can't say we'll miss cutting around all those big seeds from pounds and pounds of fruits. They make cutting up mangos a breeze.  However, pumpkin season is here, so you know what that means!  Here comes (No, not Honey Boo Boo!) PUMPKIN SORBET.  It's amazingly creamy, but still dairy, gluten and corn free.  Along with those flavors, we still have the perennial favorites - lemon, mango-lime and pineapple-coconut.

We're gearing up for hot drinks as soon as the weather cools down a bit - hot spiced cider, espresso, non-dairy cappuccino and chai - so stay tuned.  We know it doesn't make any sense that we wish for hot weather for sorbet, but cold weather for hot drinks!

What we are really waiting for is goat cheese - good in any kind of weather -  and it should be coming soon.  The "girls" rented a bus and went on a mountain vacation before going back to work again, but they are back home and refreshed.  New babies should be arriving any day, so we can start all over again with milking and cheese making.

QUARLES DAYLILLIES AND FARM

Shelby County

We'll have lots of breads, canned goods and some of the best beef around as well as some fine fresh vegetables.  We'll also have a selection of beverages, prepared brats and metts as well as some fine beef BBQ.  Come check us out and have lunch with us.

We carry a full selection of steaks: ribeyes, New York strip, T-bone, top sirloin.  All great on the grill along with hamburger patties, brats, cheese and smoked metts and jalapeno cheese metts.  Perfect for the family gatherings.  You can top off your gatherings with fresh baked goods that will have everyone satisfied when they leave the table.

Check out our website at quarlesfarm.com or visit our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/Quarlesfarm

We like to post pictures of the farm and the animals from time to time.  You never know what will show up!

Boone Creek Creamery

Handmade Artisan Cheese

Fayette County

Tomato season is still going strong so we will have our fresh handmade Mozzarella at the Markets from now until mid-September. Add a little of our Tuscan Sun, with organic sun dried tomatoes and basil, for a nice Italian flavor. We will also have a limited supply of one-year-old Parmesan available.

Our latest creation is our Mama Mia, similar to a provolone with Italian spices. It's been selling out at all of our markets, so stop by early. Fantastico.

We'll be downtown on Saturdays and Southland Drive on Sundays.

We also offer cheese making classes and supplies. For details, call or visit our website. See you at the Market.

LA PETITE CREPERIE

Fayette County

La Petite Crperie brings a little taste of France to the Bluegrass.

The idea for opening a walk-up crperie was hatched many years ago when I was a student in France.   After discovering crpes they became a staple of my diet because as a hot, quick meal they fit right in with the poor student budget.  The best part was that they were never far away. Walk-up crpe windows are like hot dog stands in New York; they are everywhere.

My husband Mark and I took many more trips to France and ate countless more crpes.  We decided that the good people of Lexington should be able enjoy them here.  After years of tweaking batters and looking for just the right griddle, and after serving hundreds of crpes to our friends, family and my French students, we think we've hit on a good combination.

La Petite Crperie hopes to recreate the experience of ordering a French crpe emporter.  Half of the fun is watching, smelling, and anticipating how delicious it's going to be.  Our batter contains only eggs from the market, Weisenberger white and wheat flours, Kentucky produced whole milk, water, canola oil, sugar and salt. Our sweet crpe fillings include honey and jam from Farmers' Market vendors, and the butter and sugar crpes are made with homemade butter from the market. We also make a hearty breakfast crpe with market eggs, cheese and vegetables. Our menu will vary as other fruits, berries and vegetables come into season.

La Petite Crperie will be open most Saturdays at Cheapside from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm.  You can visit our website, www.petitecreperie.com to find out exactly where we will be and when.  Bon apptit!

Remember to visit our website at http://www.lexingtonfarmersmarket.com for more information about the market.

THE FAYETTE ALLIANCE

The Fayette Alliance is Lexington's ONLY land-use advocacy organization that regularly educates and lobbies local government for a sustainable growth model that benefits all of us.

We believe that preserving our signature Bluegrass landscape, creating a dynamic and equitable cityscape through infill redevelopment, and improving our natural waterways by fixing our sanitary sewer and stormwater systems are key components to achieving our economic and environmental promise here in Lexington-Fayette County.

We are an alliance of citizens from the entire community, including stakeholders from the agricultural, neighborhood, and infill sectors. We are a united voice for responsible growth, and only weigh-in on those land-use issues that have countywide implications. Together we can chart our future, and positively impact local zoning decisions-the very building blocks of our community.

If you want a better quality of life for all of us, please join The Fayette Alliance today for free.  Visit www.fayettealliance.com for more information.

WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.
