BLUE MOON FARM***Sustainably Grown***
Madison County
Last weekend couldn't have been more perfect for the farmers' markets. The cool air felt so good after a long hot summer! We can always tell the change in the season by our customers buying choices......now we're moving into soups, stews, roasts, and chili! Sounds good to me! We love all the talk of menus and recipes at the market.....lots of good ideas being tossed around.
Last Sunday Leo made some pesto from our beautiful LIME BASIL and we used it to top mushroom ravioli from the "pasta guys" at Lexington Pasta. He added shrimp to it, and it was out of this world! A good reward for a weekend of work! As the night time temperatures keep going lower, the FRESH BASILS will not be happy! So if you still have plans to make some pesto for your freezer, now's the time! How nice it will be in January to fix a dinner for your family with pesto to bring back the smell of summer! We'll have GENOVESE, THAI, LIME, ARARAT and BIG LEAF ITALIAN BASILS for you this week. FRESH CUT ROSEMARY too! The farm manager at Colcord Farm missed his delivery of GRASS FINISHED BEEF to us last week because of the delivery of his twin babies!! We wish them all much happiness!! He has promised us that he will fill our freezer back up this week, so we should have good stock of STEAKS, ROASTS, and BURGER for you. Stone Cross Farm is still struggling with the sausage making machine, but has finally managed to get some sausages for us this week. Check the sign on our trailer door for availability. We know there will be BRATS! And if you're making a homemade lasagna, we have SWEET ITALIAN SAUSAGE in bulk (not in links).....CHORIZO too. We have some absolutely beautiful big, thick BONELESS PORK CHOPS, as well as thinner "breakfast chops", big ol' BONE-IN CHOPS, TENDERLOIN, SHOULDER (butt) and LOIN ROASTS, BABY BACK RIBS, and of course greatBACON and BREAKFAST SAUSAGE. A couple of new KENTUCKY-MADE CHEESES from Kenny's Cheese....their seasonal APPLE-CHEDDAR and "Reserve" CHEDDAR- aged over a year. Still have a couple of blocks of HERB HAVARTI too, as well as all your other favorites. Come try a sample! Beautiful HANDMADE GARLIC BRAIDS, bags of VARIETAL GARLIC, GARLIC SAMPLER BAGS as well as big single bulbs. We're the market's own little GARLIC FESTIVAL! Come taste our GARLIC SCAPE PESTO or garlicky CHAMPAGNE DRESSING, grab a GARLIC TOPPED FOCACCIA or GARLIC BAGEL (another New Yorker told me last week it was the best bagel he'd ever eaten! And New Yorkers know their bagels!!), or our exclusive GARLIC CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE!! Stock up for the winter with our own GARLIC POWDERS and PEPPER POWDERS. Our KALE should be back this week, and lots of PEPPERS and EGGPLANT. ARTISAN BREADS and PASTRIES from Sunrise Bakery including some with Blue Moon Farm herbs. The weather doesn't look as appealing for this Saturday, but we'll be in our spot, rain or shine, waiting for you!
Henkle's Herbs and Heirlooms
Jessamine County
If knowing the origin of what you consume is important to you, as it should be, then we are the folks to shop with. EVERYTHING we offer is started from seed and grown by us just 15 miles away at our farm in Nicholasville. We opt to use biological controls and to release beneficial insects like lacewings and lady beetles instead of spraying with pesticides that kill honey bees and other beneficial predators to create a pest management system that is friendly to the food we bring to market as well as the environment.
Check out this article about us from last month's Herald Leader at:http://www.kentucky.com/2012/08/03/2283120/integrated-pest-management-works.html
Look for us and our big box truck at the corner of Short and Upper on Saturday and at Southland Drive on Sunday. All of our offerings are sustainably grown, Kentucky Proud, 100% homegrown, and pesticide free. We are delighted to inform you that we do not sell anything that we do not grow.
We will have the following:
-Field grown heirloom and hybrid tomatoes, multiple colors
-Multi colored cherry tomato pints
-Assorted hot and sweet peppers
-Beautiful colored bell peppers
-Fresh cut Genovese and Thai Basil
-Fresh cut cilantro
-Eggplant, numerous varieties
-Lots of Roma tomatoes, great for making sauces and salsa
-Our popular uglies but goodies
Check out what's new at the farm on our Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/pages/Henkles-Herbs-and-Heirlooms/209284635797660.
We look forward to seeing you at the market!
BLEUGRASS CHEVRE
Clark County
The pawpaw season is just about over, so this weekend will probably be the last call for pawpaw sorbet, and we will be at the SUNDAY market only. It has been a lot of fun experiencing customer's reactions as they taste pawpaws for the first time, but we can't say we'll miss cutting around all those big seeds from pounds and pounds of fruits. They make cutting up mangos a breeze. However, pumpkin season is here, so you know what that means! Here comes (No, not Honey Boo Boo!) PUMPKIN SORBET. It's amazingly creamy, but still dairy, gluten and corn free. Along with those flavors, we still have the perennial favorites - lemon, mango-lime and pineapple-coconut. We're gearing up for hot drinks as soon as the weather cools down a bit - hot spiced cider, espresso, non-dairy cappuccino and chai - so stay tuned. We know it doesn't make any sense that we wish for hot weather for sorbet, but cold weather for hot drinks! What we are really waiting for is goat cheese - good in any kind of weather - and it should be coming soon. The "girls" rented a bus and went on a mountain vacation before going back to work again, but they are back home and refreshed. New babies should be arriving any day, so we can start all over again with milking and cheese making.
QUARLES DAYLILLIES AND FARM
Shelby County
We'll have lots of breads, canned goods and some of the best beef around as well as some fine fresh vegetables. We'll also have a selection of beverages, prepared brats and metts as well as some fine beef BBQ. Come check us out and have lunch with us.
We carry a full selection of steaks: ribeyes, New York strip, T-bone, top sirloin. All great on the grill along with hamburger patties, brats, cheese and smoked metts and jalapeno cheese metts. Perfect for the family gatherings. You can top off your gatherings with fresh baked goods that will have everyone satisfied when they leave the table.
We like to post pictures of the farm and the animals from time to time. You never know what will show up!
Boone Creek Creamery
Handmade Artisan Cheese
Fayette County
Tomato season is still going strong so we will have our fresh handmade Mozzarella at the Markets from now until mid-September. Add a little of our Tuscan Sun, with organic sun dried tomatoes and basil, for a nice Italian flavor. We will also have a limited supply of one-year-old Parmesan available.
Our latest creation is our Mama Mia, similar to a provolone with Italian spices. It's been selling out at all of our markets, so stop by early. Fantastico.
We'll be downtown on Saturdays and Southland Drive on Sundays.
We also offer cheese making classes and supplies. For details, call or visit our website. See you at the Market.

Come down, bring the dog and come see me for your dogs favorite treats! LA PETITE CREPERIE Fayette County La Petite Crêperie brings a little taste of France to the Bluegrass. The idea for opening a walk-up crêperie was hatched many years ago when I was a student in France. After discovering crêpes they became a staple of my diet because as a hot, quick meal they fit right in with the poor student budget. The best part was that they were never far away. Walk-up crêpe windows are like hot dog stands in New York; they are everywhere. My husband Mark and I took many more trips to France and ate countless more crêpes. We decided that the good people of Lexington should be able enjoy them here. After years of tweaking batters and looking for just the right griddle, and after serving hundreds of crêpes to our friends, family and my French students, we think we've hit on a good combination. La Petite Crêperie hopes to recreate the experience of ordering a French crêpe à emporter. Half of the fun is watching, smelling, and anticipating how delicious it's going to be. Our batter contains only eggs from the market, Weisenberger white and wheat flours, Kentucky produced whole milk, water, canola oil, sugar and salt. Our sweet crêpe fillings include honey and jam from Farmers' Market vendors, and the butter and sugar crêpes are made with homemade butter from the market. We also make a hearty breakfast crêpe with market eggs, cheese and vegetables. Our menu will vary as other fruits, berries and vegetables come into season. La Petite Crêperie will be open most Saturdays at Cheapside from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm. You can visit our website, www.petitecreperie.com to find out exactly where we will be and when. Bon appétit! MARKET HAPPENINGS THIS WEEK

DLC'S ARTIST MARKET:
The artist market has officially come to an end for the year. Many thanks to the DLC and the numerous artists who helped make the market possible.
SPECIAL GUESTS AT THE LFM...
Central Baptist Hospital will continue selling their cookbook, Beyond the Fence, at the Friends of the Farmers' Market table. Recipes from their cookbook will be featured in this year's farm dinner, Taste of the Farm!
KID'S ACTIVITIES AT THE LFM...
LFM kids' activities provided this year were great! Thanks to all the special organizations throughout town who brought all these interesting activities to market. We will see you again next year!
GLEANING with Faith Feeds...
Twice each week, on Monday and Friday mornings, I lead a group of Faith Feeds volunteers out to Reed Valley Orchard in Bourbon County to glean windfalls of fruit for distribution to the 20 Emergency Food Agencies whom we serve. It is always amazing to see how many apples and pears can be gleaned in less than two hours: in each of our four trips to the Orchard over the past two weeks, three Faith Feeds volunteers have collected 500 lbs of fruit! We delivered some of this bounty directly to God's Pantry Food Bank, and other portions were distributed to Lexington's two Hope Centers and other shelters, where the fruit was enjoyed in meals the very day that it arrived.
Reed Valley Orchard grows more than 50 varieties of apples and pears, and we are now entering the busiest part of our gleaning year. We need more helpers to cope with the increasing bounty at RVO. I would like to take six to eight volunteers to the Orchard each Monday and Friday, and I am asking you to sign up for at least one of the dates listed below for each month. We will be gleaning apples and pears over the next two months, and we add pumpkins and cushaws to our gleaning list in November.
September: Monday 24 Friday 21, 28
October: Monday 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 Friday 5, 12, 19, 26
November: Monday 5, 12, 19, 26 Friday 2, 9, 16, 23, 30
Here's the plan of action: I leave my home at 8:30 am to drive to the Orchard, and arrive there around 9:15 am. Contact me in advance if you want to meet at my house to carpool with other volunteers or follow me to the Orchard. If you want to go out to RVO on your own, see below for directions. The drive out there takes about 40 minutes, and we usually spend 2 hours gleaning. We use yard rakes to pull the windfalls from beneath the trees, and put the useable pieces of fruit in bags and boxes for delivery. This activity is lots of fun and the agencies who receive our gleaned fruit (church feeding programs, soup kitchens, shelters, etc.) truly enjoy the bounty of this lovely Orchard.
If you have any questions about Faith Feeds' gleaning activities at Reed Valley Orchard, please call or email me and I will answer them. You should wear comfortable clothing and a sun hat, and bring water to drink while we work. I will have extra collecting buckets, rakes, boxes, and other equipment in my truck.
I thank you for your interest in helping Faith Feeds provide fresh fruit to the hungry in central Kentucky!
With best regards, Mary Powell, RVO volunteer coordinator for Faith Feeds mary.powell@faithfeedslex.org

THE FAYETTE ALLIANCE
The Fayette Alliance is Lexington's ONLY land-use advocacy organization that regularly educates and lobbies local government for a sustainable growth model that benefits all of us.
We believe that preserving our signature Bluegrass landscape, creating a dynamic and equitable cityscape through infill redevelopment, and improving our natural waterways by fixing our sanitary sewer and stormwater systems are key components to achieving our economic and environmental promise here in Lexington-Fayette County.
We are an alliance of citizens from the entire community, including stakeholders from the agricultural, neighborhood, and infill sectors. We are a united voice for responsible growth, and only weigh-in on those land-use issues that have countywide implications. Together we can chart our future, and positively impact local zoning decisions-the very building blocks of our community.
If you want a better quality of life for all of us, please join The Fayette Alliance today for free. Visit www.fayettealliance.com for more information.
WUKY
WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.
