Try this awesome bean salad recipe from 101 Cookbooks while the beans are still plenty.

 Yellow Bean Salad

Ingredients:

  •  1 pound / 16 oz yellow runner beans
  • 1 serrano chile, stemmed and seeded
  • 5 green onions, green parts trimmed & reserved
  • Big handful of cilantro
  • 1 clove garlic, peeled and smashed
  • 3/4 teaspoon fine grain sea salt
  • 1 tablespoon sunflower oil
  • 1 cup coconut milk, well mixed
  • 1- 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice, or to taste
  • 2 big handfuls / 1/2 cup toasted pepitas
  • 1 1/2 cups tiny pan-fried tofu cubes, optional
  • Basil flower garnish, optional

Directions:

  1. Cut the beans into 1-inch segments on a deep bias. Cook in a pot of well-salted water for just 30 seconds, drain, and run under cold water to stop cooking. Drain, and aggressively shake off as much water as possible. Set aside.
  2. To make the dressing, pulse the chile, onions, cilantro, garlic, salt, and sunflower oil into a paste with a food processor. Pulse in the coconut milk in two additions, before adding the lemon juice to taste, a half tablespoon at a time.
  3. Place the beans in a large bowl with most of the pepitas and tofu cubes (if you're using them). Toss well with a generous amount of the dressing (you'll have plenty of leftover), even so, as I mention up above, this is one of those salads that benefits from over-dressing versus under.
  4. Serve in a bowl or platter topped with the remaining pepitas and tofu, and basil flowers if you happen to have them.

Serves 4-6.

ABIGAIL'S

Fayette County

HONEY - Just harvested fall honey.  Fresh, fresh, fresh.  Did I say fresh?
A lovely yellow honey with a smart taste.  You'll love it.

SOAPS - Still have plenty of Lemongrass.  Plenty of other soaps too.

BOOKS - Even though it is not October 1st for "Death By Bourbon" release date, I have copies.  So if you want an advance copy, stop by my booth and get yours.

Website store - I will be dismantling Abigail's store (honey, soap, lotions) from my website after October.  It is just not cost-effective to run it since most of my customers purchase in person.  So if you need to stock-up, do so before October 30th.  Of course, if you need something after the store has been dismantled, just email me.

Need to get in touch - [email protected]

BLUE MOON FARM***Sustainably Grown***
Madison County

If only the market was starting when we were ready to go home last Saturday!  It turned into a beautiful afternoon/evening, but it sure started out lousy!!  As always, we appreciate our steadfast customers who braved first the rain, then cold breeze, to do their weekly market shopping!

Lately we've been hearing a pair of screech owls communicating across our hollow here at the edge of dark.  Wish I knew what they were talking about!  Sometimes they sound like crazy ladies laughing!

We'll have lots more FRESH CUT BASIL this week, but we're going to let the KALE rest for a week.  FRESH CUT ROSEMARY, GREEN ONIONS, lots of PEPPERS, EGGPLANT, and of course GARLIC!!  The selection of beautiful HANDMADE GARLIC BRAIDS is great right now...they make such a nice gift for a wedding, house warming, birthday, thank you, or most any occasion!  Even if the recipient doesn't cook, a braid makes a terrific kitchen decoration, and lasts for years!  We'll have BAGGED GARLIC, BIG SINGLE BULBS, and our "Chef's Delight"- a GARLIC SAMPLER bag containing 8 varieties.  GARLIC POWDERS, GARLIC BAGELS, GARLIC TOPPED FOCACCIA, GARLIC SCAPE PESTO, garlicky CHAMPAGNE DRESSING, and the famous GARLIC CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES!

I'm working of replenishing our stock of PEPPER POWDERS, PAPRIKA and CHIPOTLE hopefully for the weekend!

Have you tried our TEA yet?  We call it "Sunday Tea" as it has been a Sunday morning staple here on the farm for over 20 years!  It's an Earl Grey base (either green or black) with LAVENDER and ROSEMARY.  Really nice.

Handmade SOAPS from Stone Cross Farm, from whom we also get PASTURED PORK of all sorts including BACON, CHOPS, SAUSAGE etc.  We've got a few beautiful racks of BABY BACK RIBS too!

GRASS FINISHED BEEF (beef which is totally grass fed....never any grain) from Colcord Farm like STEAKS (30% off), ROASTS, BURGER.
Kentucky LAMB BURGER or STEW MEAT, and one package of LAMB RACKS.
We have a couple of new Kenny's KY MADE CHEESES...Herb Havarti, Apple Cheddar, and "Reserve" Cheddar (aged over a year).  All your regular favorites too.
ARTISAN BREADS from Sunrise Bakery, and their great PASTRIES too, including those wonderful CINNAMON BUNS.

Rain or shine you'll find us Saturday behind the old courthouse on Short Street between 7:30AM and around 2:30PM, Sunday on Southland Drive in front of Goodyear 10AM-2PM.

Henkle's Herbs and Heirlooms

Jessamine County

If knowing the origin of what you consume is important to you, as it should be, then we are the folks to shop with.  EVERYTHING we offer is started from seed and grown by us just 15 miles away at our farm in Nicholasville.  We opt to use biological controls and to release beneficial insects like lacewings and lady beetles instead of spraying with pesticides that kill honey bees and other beneficial predators to create a pest management system that is friendly to the food we bring to market as well as the environment.

Look for us and our big box truck on Thursday at Broadway and Maxwell, at the corner of Short and Upper on Saturday and at Southland Drive on Sunday.

All of our offerings are sustainably grown, Kentucky Proud, 100% homegrown, and pesticide free.  We are delighted to inform you that we do not sell anything that we do not grow.

QUARLES DAYLILLIES AND FARM

Shelby County

School has started in Shelby County and our garden and farm help have returned to high school and it's very noticeable around the place.    Regardless of school starting, market is still in full swing with lots of wholesome selections.  We'll have lots of breads, canned goods and some of the best beef around as well as some fine fresh vegetables.  We'll also have a selection of beverages, prepared brats and metts as well as some fine beef BBQ.  Come check us out and have lunch with us.

We carry a full selection of steaks: ribeyes, New York strip, T-bone, top sirloin.  All great on the grill along with hamburger patties, brats, cheese and smoked metts and jalapeno cheese metts.  Perfect for the family gatherings.  You can top off your gatherings with fresh baked goods that will have everyone satisfied when they leave the table.

Check out our website at quarlesfarm.com or visit our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/Quarlesfarm

We like to post pictures of the farm and the animals from time to time.  You never know what will show up!

Bluegrass Chevre
Clark County

It's pawpaw season, and you know what that means. Pawpaw sorbet!  This humble fruit with the exotic melon-pineapple-banana flavor is so creamy, we have managed to make our version dairy free with the silky mouth feel of rich ice cream.  Come by our Sorbet Cafe booth and see what we mean.  You can't get any more local than this.

We have hung up our cheese making hat for a few weeks to give "the girls" a break and to get ready for fall kidding.  We should have cheese again soon and all through the winter.

CaffeMarco

Bourbon County

Introducing Caffe Journey, the richest and smoothest cup of coffee you will ever experience. Honestly, when my great grandfather, Pino Caffemarco, founded the family coffee roasting business in Paris, Kentucky before the turn of the 20th century, he was offering a solid product at a fair price. We have continued that tradition with the Black Bag and the Gold Bag for over one hundred years in the Bluegrass.

Now, it's time to offer Total Luxury. Surrender, this is a journey that you want to never end. This is velvet upon velvet, seated in first class.

Available now at the Saturday Farmers Market.

Boone Creek Creamery

Tomato season is still going strong so we will have our fresh handmade Mozzarella at the Markets from now until mid-September. Add a little of our Tuscan Sun, with organic sun dried tomatoes and basil, for a nice Italian flavor. We will also have a limited supply of one-year-old Parmesan available.

Our latest creation is our Mama Mia, similar to a provolone with Italian spices. It's been selling out at all of our markets, so stop by early. Fantastico.

We'll be downtown on Saturdays and Southland Drive on Sundays.

We also offer cheese making classes and supplies. For details, call or visit our website. See you at the Market.

LA PETITE CREPERIE

Fayette County

La Petite Crperie brings a little taste of France to the Bluegrass.

The idea for opening a walk-up crperie was hatched many years ago when I was a student in France.   After discovering crpes they became a staple of my diet because as a hot, quick meal they fit right in with the poor student budget.  The best part was that they were never far away. Walk-up crpe windows are like hot dog stands in New York; they are everywhere.

My husband Mark and I took many more trips to France and ate countless more crpes.  We decided that the good people of Lexington should be able enjoy them here.  After years of tweaking batters and looking for just the right griddle, and after serving hundreds of crpes to our friends, family and my French students, we think we've hit on a good combination.

La Petite Crperie hopes to recreate the experience of ordering a French crpe emporter.  Half of the fun is watching, smelling, and anticipating how delicious it's going to be.  Our batter contains only eggs from the market, Weisenberger white and wheat flours, Kentucky produced whole milk, water, canola oil, sugar and salt. Our sweet crpe fillings include honey and jam from Farmers' Market vendors, and the butter and sugar crpes are made with homemade butter from the market. We also make a hearty breakfast crpe with market eggs, cheese and vegetables. Our menu will vary as other fruits, berries and vegetables come into season.

La Petite Crperie will be open most Saturdays at Cheapside from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm.  You can visit our website, www.petitecreperie.com to find out exactly where we will be and when.  Bon apptit!

Remember to visit our website at http://www.lexingtonfarmersmarket.com for more information about the market.

THE FAYETTE ALLIANCE

The Fayette Alliance is Lexington's ONLY land-use advocacy organization that regularly educates and lobbies local government for a sustainable growth model that benefits all of us.

We believe that preserving our signature Bluegrass landscape, creating a dynamic and equitable cityscape through infill redevelopment, and improving our natural waterways by fixing our sanitary sewer and stormwater systems are key components to achieving our economic and environmental promise here in Lexington-Fayette County.

We are an alliance of citizens from the entire community, including stakeholders from the agricultural, neighborhood, and infill sectors. We are a united voice for responsible growth, and only weigh-in on those land-use issues that have countywide implications. Together we can chart our future, and positively impact local zoning decisions-the very building blocks of our community.

WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.
