With the annual dinner behind us and Labor Day coming up it is a sure sign that Fall is upon us. Hard to believe that the cool air breeze of Fall is finally starting to make its way to the Bluegrass. I am not complaining... Fall is my favorite time of the year! Bring on the football, jeans and sweatshirts, apples, winter squash, pumpkins, gourds, cool weather greens, and all the spiced apple concoctions you can think up. With that being said, I hope all of you enjoy your three day weekend and the slow start to the Fall season!
HELP! The LFM needs your votes.
- American Farmland Trust posted the latest voting results from their contest to find America's favorite Farmers' Markets. The LFM has fallen to #9 in the Large Market Category. We want to move into the top 3 and need your help.
Come visit us during the week! Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7am-4pm on the corner of Maxwell and Broadway, and The Food Cart located within the Government Building downtown from 11am-2pm every Thursday.

BLUE MOON FARM***Sustainably Grown***
Madison County
Friday brings us the last "Blue Moon" until 2015!! Unfortunately, Hurricane Isaac may prevent us from getting even a tiny glimpse of it, but I'm guessing we'll know it's there by how bright the sky is even with the clouds! We found some beautiful moon photos and posted them on our Facebook page......have a look! www.facebook.com/bluemoongarlic
We've been busy making more of our beautiful handmade GARLIC BRAIDS this week, and will also have LOTS of other GARLIC! At least four varieties by the bag, and of course big SINGLE BULBS too. For those who'd rather have GARLIC POWDER, we make our own that is nothing like store bought! It comes with a recipe for out-of-this-world oven baked GARLIC "FRIES". Not enough garlic for you yet? How about our own GARLIC SCAPE PESTO? The perfect pasta dressing (great with Lexington Pasta's offerings), seasoning for mashed potatoes, topping for pizza, sandwich spread, and anywhere else your imagination takes you! GARLIC BAGELS, GARLIC-TOPPED FOCACCIA, GARLIC CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES!!!
We are sorry to say that the delicious ROMAINE LETTUCE has been usurped by our resident deer. It's disappointing because they don't even likeit, but they bite it off and spit it out! Bluegrass Chevre Clark County
It's pawpaw season, and you know what that means. Pawpaw sorbet! This humble fruit with the exotic melon-pineapple-banana flavor is so creamy, we have managed to make our version dairy free with the silky mouth feel of rich ice cream. Come by our Sorbet Cafe booth and see what we mean. You can't get any more local than this. We have hung up our cheese making hat for a few weeks to give "the girls" a break and to get ready for fall kidding. We should have cheese again soon and all through the winter.
Henkle's Herbs and Heirlooms

CaffeMarco
Introducing Caffe Journey, the richest and smoothest cup of coffee you will ever experience. Honestly, when my great grandfather, Pino Caffemarco, founded the family coffee roasting business in Paris, Kentucky before the turn of the 20th century, he was offering a solid product at a fair price. We have continued that tradition with the Black Bag and the Gold Bag for over one hundred years in the Bluegrass.
Now, it's time to offer Total Luxury. Surrender, this is a journey that you want to never end. This is velvet upon velvet, seated in first class.
Available now at the Saturday Farmers Market.

Tomato season is still going strong so we will have our fresh handmade Mozzarella at the Markets from now until mid-September. Add a little of our Tuscan Sun, with organic sun dried tomatoes and basil, for a nice Italian flavor. We will also have a limited supply of one-year-old Parmesan available.
Our latest creation is our Mama Mia, similar to a provolone with Italian spices. It's been selling out at all of our markets, so stop by early. Fantastico.
We'll be downtown on Saturdays and Southland Drive on Sundays.
We also offer cheese making classes and supplies. For details, call or visit our website. See you at the Market.

Lambing season is over here on the farm at Good Shepherd Cheese. Our final total of lambs is 69. 35 ewe lambs and 34 ram lambs. Our 51 momma ewes are back in the pasture now, spending their days munching on Orchard grass & Clover from our rich Kentucky soil here in the rolling hills in Bath County. The orchard grass, clover & native flora all combine to give our sheep milk it's own distinctive flavor. This flavor contributes a wonderful earthy, nutty and buttery taste to our Good Shepherd Cheese.
News Flash - Check out the June issue of Kentucky Monthly Magazine for a great article about Good Shepherd Cheese by Megan Smith. Megan has done a wonderful job of capturing what life is like here on the farm. She also lets her readers know just how we got into this crazy life of milking sheep and making cheese.

LA PETITE CREPERIE
Fayette County
La Petite Crêperie brings a little taste of France to the Bluegrass.
The idea for opening a walk-up crêperie was hatched many years ago when I was a student in France. After discovering crêpes they became a staple of my diet because as a hot, quick meal they fit right in with the poor student budget. The best part was that they were never far away. Walk-up crêpe windows are like hot dog stands in New York; they are everywhere.
My husband Mark and I took many more trips to France and ate countless more crêpes. We decided that the good people of Lexington should be able enjoy them here. After years of tweaking batters and looking for just the right griddle, and after serving hundreds of crêpes to our friends, family and my French students, we think we've hit on a good combination.
La Petite Crêperie hopes to recreate the experience of ordering a French crêpe à emporter. Half of the fun is watching, smelling, and anticipating how delicious it's going to be. Our batter contains only eggs from the market, Weisenberger white and wheat flours, Kentucky produced whole milk, water, canola oil, sugar and salt. Our sweet crêpe fillings include honey and jam from Farmers' Market vendors, and the butter and sugar crêpes are made with homemade butter from the market. We also make a hearty breakfast crêpe with market eggs, cheese and vegetables. Our menu will vary as other fruits, berries and vegetables come into season.
La Petite Crêperie will be open most Saturdays at Cheapside from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm. You can visit our website, www.petitecreperie.com to find out exactly where we will be and when. Bon appétit!

THE FAYETTE ALLIANCE The Fayette Alliance is Lexington's ONLY land-use advocacy organization that regularly educates and lobbies local government for a sustainable growth model that benefits all of us. We believe that preserving our signature Bluegrass landscape, creating a dynamic and equitable cityscape through infill redevelopment, and improving our natural waterways by fixing our sanitary sewer and stormwater systems are key components to achieving our economic and environmental promise here in Lexington-Fayette County. We are an alliance of citizens from the entire community, including stakeholders from the agricultural, neighborhood, and infill sectors. We are a united voice for responsible growth, and only weigh-in on those land-use issues that have countywide implications. Together we can chart our future, and positively impact local zoning decisions-the very building blocks of our community. If you want a better quality of life for all of us, please join The Fayette Alliance today for free. Visit www.fayettealliance.com for more information. WUKY WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY. |
