Thank you to 101 Cookbooks for yet another fabulous recipe (and the gorgeous picture):

Heirloom Tomato Salad Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 pounds tomatoes ( a mix of small heirlooms & cherry tomatoes), halved
  • 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar or maple syrup
  • Couple pinches of fine grain sea salt
  • 1/3 cup toasted almond slices
  • 2 tablespoons capers, fried in a bit of oil
  • 6 oz good mozzarella, torn into chunks
  • A handful of torn lettuce leaves
  • Generous drizzle of lemon olive oil or chive oil*
  • Chive (or herb) flowers or minced chives, to serve

Directions

  1. To start, you're going to roast about 1/2 of the tomatoes. Preheat the oven to 350°F, and adjust the oven rack to the top third of the oven.
  2. Toss the tomatoes in a bowl along with the olive oil, sugar, and salt. Arrange them in a single layer, cut side up, on a rimmed baking sheet.
  3. Bake, without stirring, until the tomatoes shrink a bit and start to caramelize around the edges, 45 to 60 minutes. Set aside to cool.
  4. When ready to serve, gently toss the roasted and raw tomatoes with a bit of chive or lemon oil, most of the almonds, the capers, the mozzarella, and the lettuce. Taste and season with a bit more salt if needed.
  5. Serve topped with the remaining almonds, and any herb flowers you might have.

"Local Raw Honey" by NICK and BEV NICKELS

Fayette County

We will be at the following Lexington Farmers Markets this week if it doesn't rain:
Downtown at Cheapside Park, Saturday, August 4th (opens at 7am)
Southland Drive, Sunday, August 5th (10am-2pm)

See you at one of the markets!.

We will not be at the Lexington Farmers Market at the University of Kentucky on University Drive, Wednesday, August 1st (3:00-6:00pm)

You may purchase honey, pollen, and/or beeswax candles from us anytime from our home at 1909 Nicholasville Road in Lexington. Call us first at 859 276-0258, and we will put what you want on our back porch for you to pick up. You may also call to make an appointment to look at Bev's candle selection.

Out home is located one block north (toward downtown) of the intersection of Southland Drive and Nicholasville Road. Turn on Goodrich Avenue and take the first driveway on your right, and you will be in our back yard. There will be a silver travel trailer (Airstream) under an awning directly in front of you. Your honey will be on the back porch. If we are not home, just leave the money on the counter.  There is change in a small jar on the counter if you need some.

Abigail's
Fayette County

This has been a wonderful summer!  I hope it has been for you.  There is plenty of time left in the season to get such yummy treats like goat cheese from Bluegrass Chevre, which is next to me.  Perhaps you need some garlic from Blue  Moon Farm or pawpaws from the PawPaw Plantation to make pawpaw ice cream.  Now if you need fresh honey, you know where to come - Abigail's!!!!!

HONEY -  I have a nice locust/clover blend.  It is a very light mild honey. Very smooth.  A beautiful table honey.  My husband is going to take off work this month and we are going to do one last sweep of the hives.  Maybe there might be some honey or not.  We will see.

SOAPS - They may look clunky but they work.  They leave your skin feeling refreshed and moisturized.  Compare them with commercial soaps.  You can't beat soaps with olive oil, canola oil, coconut oil, palm oil, Vitamin E and honey.  You just can't!!!!!

"Death By Bridle"  is the third installment in the Josiah Reynolds mysteries.  I have two left but I have ordered more.  "Death By Bourbon"  will be out in a month.  Have your fingers  crossed that I make the deadline.  All books are available at the LFM -  Josiah's market of choice.

Talks -  Will be happy to talk with your group.  Just email me several months before the event.  If I can make it - I will.

BLUE MOON FARM***Sustainably Grown***
Madison County

Some years ago, one of the landmark restaurants in Lexington was Stanley Demos' Coach House on South Broadway (where Casanova's is today).  It was the place to see and be seen, to celebrate after the races, birthdays, anniversaries, etc.  They were famous for their CHAMPAGNE DRESSING, and we feel privileged to be able to offer you this tasty dressing, made from Mr. Demos' recipe, using our garlic!  We have been out of it for the past couple of weeks, but this weekend IT'S BACK!!  We'll bring a sample....ask for a taste!  It's not only a great salad dressing, but also makes a terrific cole slaw,  potato or pasta salad, or an addition to devilled eggs.  Try it on a sandwich in place of mayo!

Another great sandwich topper is our GARLIC SCAPE PESTO, made from the flower stems ("scapes") of the hardneck garlic plants in the spring.  We always have samples for you to try!  There are just so many ways to use it!  More than a few customers tell us they stand in front of the fridge and eat it right out of the container with their spoon!  :-))

We are your garlic connection!!  We'll have GARLIC in different varieties, by the BULB or BAG, some of our handmade GARLIC BRAIDS, our homemade GARLIC POWDER, GARLIC FOCACCIA, GARLIC BAGELS, and our locally famous GARLIC CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES!  We'll have the first of our UZBEKISTAN garlic, a limited quantity variety with an awesome garlic flavor.

KALE will be back this week, GREEN and RED RUSSIAN, lots of BASIL....SWEET, THAI and LIME, ONIONS and GREEN ONIONS.

From Bracken County FRESH MUSHROOMS, from Bourbon County GRASS FINISHED BEEF (the steak sale continues- 30% off), from Spencer County all kinds of PORK including BACON for your BLT's!  Sunrise Bakery will supply the ARTISAN BREADS and PASTRIES.  Kenny's CHEESES from Barren County too.  Two new ones this week- CHIPOTLE COLBY and CRACKED PEPPER CHEDDAR!

Special orders, garlic@bluemoongarlic.com, stay in touch on Facebook, www.facebook.com/bluemoongarlic , or visit our website www.bluemoongarlic.com

QUARLES DAYLILLIES AND FARM

Shelby County

We've got a bit of much welcome rain over the last two weeks.  It's made the beans, squash and cucumbers sprout which is good.  Now if we can just get the carrots and beets to sprout.  It may not be meant to happen but we'll keep our fingers crossed.  Right now our zucchini, yellow squash and cucumbers are doing well and we'll have plenty at both markets in addition to onions.

We'll also have plenty of beef in the coolers.  Steaks, brats, metts, roasts. hamburger patties.  Lots of variety.  For those of you that want organ meat, we should have plenty of liver soon.  We'll also have several other varieties of organ meat.  Just drop us a line and we'll let you know what we have left.  We'll also have beef BBQ ready to eat as sandwiches or heat and eat at home.  Good for nights you don't really feel like heating up the kitchen.  Sweet tea and lemonade is also available for those dying of thirst during their shopping ventures.

Lots of breads will grace the table, just right for family gatherings or lunch box treats.  Buy several, take them home, slip them in a freezer bag and enjoy them throughout the week.

Check out our website at quarlesfarm.com or visit our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/Quarlesfarm   There's a few pictures of our newest aquisitions, hair sheep.  We've bought four feeder lambs and four replacement yearling ewes so life should be entertaining for a while.  Sheep have returned to Quarles Farm for the first time in over 40 years.  We think it's about time.

Bleugrass Chèvre
Clark County

We're busy slicing peaches, cutting up watermelons, peeling mangos and squeezing lemons for Saturday's sorbet!  There have been a lot of questions from customers about ingredients, so here's the "scoop."

We always use fresh seasonal fruit from the market, but obviously we have to purchase the tropical fruits elsewhere.  A few flavors (such as roasted strawberry with goat cheese) contain a small amount of coconut or hemp milk for creaminess.  One teaspoon of arrowroot per batch is the only ingredient we use for texture.

Our ingredients are dairy-free, gluten-free and corn-free, but we will always have one flavor with goat cheese.  The ingredients are usually very simple: pureed fruit, water, sugar and honey from the market.  Elaine is practically a chemist now from reading stacks of ice cream and sorbet books and experimenting to get a proper "mouth feel" while using only healthy ingredients.  So stop by for a scoop of what we feel is a pretty unique and delicious product.  And we hope to have pints available before the end of the summer.

Of course we'll have cheeses, as well.  If the weather doesn't cool down soon, we're going to have to feed the goats sorbet to cool them off!

Cheers,
Susan and Elaine

BOONE CREEK CREAMERY

HANDMADE ARTISAN CHEESE

Fayette County

Tomato season is in full swing so we will have our fresh handmade Mozzarella at the Markets from now until mid-September. It always sells out, so stop by early. If you're making Caprice Salads add a little of our Tuscan Sun, with organic sun dried tomatoes and basil, for a nice Italian flavor. We will also have a limited supply of one-year-old Parmesan available.

Our Scandinavian Bread Cheese is also wonderful on tomatoes and salads. There's no bread in it. This is a toasted cheese with a grilled flavor. When served warm, this Scandinavian delicacy is absolutely amazing.

Our Blackberry Serenade is an alpine Gruyere infused with blackberry wine. A little sweet with a nice Summer flavor. Try it with a little Blackberry Jam. Mmm... So good you might want it for dessert.

We'll be downtown on Saturdays, Southland Drive on Sundays, and Alumni Drive on Wednesday afternoons.

We also offer cheese making classes, supplies, and equipment. For details, call or visit our website. See you at the Market.

GOOD SHEPHERD
Bath County

Lambing season is over here on the farm at Good Shepherd Cheese.  Our final total of lambs is 69.  35 ewe lambs and 34 ram lambs.  Our 51 momma ewes are back in the pasture now, spending their days munching on Orchard grass & Clover from our rich Kentucky soil here in the rolling hills in Bath County.  The orchard grass, clover & native flora all combine to give our sheep milk it's own distinctive flavor.  This flavor contributes a wonderful earthy, nutty and buttery taste to our Good Shepherd Cheese.

News Flash - Check out the June issue of Kentucky Monthly Magazine for a great article about Good Shepherd Cheese by Megan Smith.  Megan has done a wonderful job of capturing what life is like here on the farm.  She also lets her readers know just how we got into this crazy life of milking sheep and making cheese.

LA PETITE CREPERIE

Fayette County

La Petite Crêperie brings a little taste of France to the Bluegrass.

The idea for opening a walk-up crêperie was hatched many years ago when I was a student in France.   After discovering crêpes they became a staple of my diet because as a hot, quick meal they fit right in with the poor student budget.  The best part was that they were never far away. Walk-up crêpe windows are like hot dog stands in New York; they are everywhere.

My husband Mark and I took many more trips to France and ate countless more crêpes.  We decided that the good people of Lexington should be able enjoy them here.  After years of tweaking batters and looking for just the right griddle, and after serving hundreds of crêpes to our friends, family and my French students, we think we've hit on a good combination.

La Petite Crêperie hopes to recreate the experience of ordering a French crêpe à emporter.  Half of the fun is watching, smelling, and anticipating how delicious it's going to be.  Our batter contains only eggs from the market, Weisenberger white and wheat flours, Kentucky produced whole milk, water, canola oil, sugar and salt. Our sweet crêpe fillings include honey and jam from Farmers' Market vendors, and the butter and sugar crêpes are made with homemade butter from the market. We also make a hearty breakfast crêpe with market eggs, cheese and vegetables. Our menu will vary as other fruits, berries and vegetables come into season.

La Petite Crêperie will be open most Saturdays at Cheapside from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm. and most Sundays at Southland from 10:00 until 2:00.  You can visit our website, www.petitecreperie.com to find out exactly where we will be and when.  Bon appétit!

With relentless persistence she brought her concerns to town meetings to warn her fellow citizens that the chemicals they were putting on their lawns posed severe health risks and had unknown side effects on the environment.

WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.
