The Lexington Farmers' Market

June 27th, 2012

Let me start with a quick thanks to all those that made the Veggin' at the Pool event last week a great success!  We could not have pulled it off without the help of Good Foods Co-Op, Lexington Parks and Rec, Southland Pool, the Tweens coalition, and the numerous friends and volunteers who came together to make it happen. A huge round of applause goes out to you!  Thanks as well to those who attended the event and we hope to see you again next year.

One event down and another big one to go.  Mark your calendars now for our annual Taste of Farm in the City Dinner, Saturday August 25th.  See you there!

While perusing the news last week I came across this article in the New Yorker I'd like to share.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/21/opinion/lets-add-a-little-dirt-to-our-diet.html?_r=1&smid=fb-share

Foodies, enjoy this great article about getting back to our food roots and mixing a little dirt with it.

Come out to the UK market tonight from 3pm-6pm or, don't forget about our other great weekday markets, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7am-4pm on the corner of Maxwell and Broadway, and Food Cart located within the Government Building downtown from 11am-2pm every Thursday.

As always you can find us Saturdays at Cheapside Park from 7am-3pm. Follow us to Southland Drive on Sunday from 10am-2pm. Also remember that parking is FREE on Saturdays in the Financial Center garage across Main Street or anywhere on the streets in a designated spot.

Hope to see you at Market!

Summer corn has arrived!  Try it out in this 101 Cookbooks recipe.

Summer Corn Salad

Ingredients:

  • 6 ears of corn
  • 1 large shallot, minced
  • 1/3 cup fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine grain sea salt
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons sunflower oil
  • 3/4 cup / 4 oz / 115g toasted pepitas
  • 3/4 cup / 4 oz / 115g toasted sunflower seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Mexican oregano
Directions

  1. Shuck the corn and use a knife to cut the kernels from the cobs.
  2. Place the kernels in a medium bowl with the shallot while you make the dressing.
  3. Combine the lemon juice, salt, and sugar in a small bowl or jar. Gradually add the oil, whisking vigorously until the dressing comes together. Taste, and adjust with more lemon juice, salt or sugar, if needed. This dressing should be on the sweet side, not overly tangy.
  4. Just before serving, add the seeds to the bowl of corn along with 2/3 of the dressing. Toss well, really get everything well coated. If you want more dressing, add more to taste. Crush the oregano between your palms and let it shower down on to the salad. Toss one more time and serve.
  5. Serves 6 or more.

Prep time: 10 min

BLUE MOON FARM***Sustainably Grown***
Madison County

What does "sustainably grown" mean?  On Blue Moon Farm we grow the same way we did when we were "certified organic".....actually the same way we did even before that!  We eat what we grow too, so there are NO petrochemical fertilizers or herbicides on the farm....EVER.  We use the same insect sprays which are allowed under organic rules ("OMRI approved"), and use chicken compost and fish emulsion as our fertilizers.  The abundance of big fat earthworms in our gardens is evidence of how healthy the soil is!

We are sorry to say that our lettuces, spinach and pea shoots are done for the summer.  We will hope for more again in the fall.  The BASILS don't mind the heat so much, but sure could use a nice slow all-day rain!  With as much breeze as there has been lately, the water we give them doesn't last long.  That said, we will have more of that yummy KALE, SHALLOTS, ONIONS and FRESH CUT BASILS (sweet, Thai and Lime) this weekend.

The GARLIC harvest is done!!!  About 2 weeks early!  What a relief to have it hanging safely in the barn!  The dry, dry weather is about perfect for garlic curing, so we are close to having bagged garlic and braids.....maybe some bags this weekend! (and of course we'll have big single bulbs too!)   It's always fun for us to bring the first of our "Music" garlic to market and watch the excitement it creates!  Who'da thunk a bulb of garlic could be such a big event? :-)
As many of you know, Leo and Jean have been off making GARLIC SCAPE PESTO for the past few Sundays.  We got done with that project and have a good supply to carry us til the scapes come back next spring.  We're glad to be back at the market again on Sundays, and to give our helpers Geraldine and Heather some well deserved days off!

We still have some HERB SETS available, but are not carrying them all to market at this point.  If there is something in particular you need, please drop us an email and we'll be happy to bring it for you.  garlic@bluemoongarlic.com
Our own freshly ground CHIPOTLE POWDER, PAPRIKA, and the hot and fruity AJI AMARILLO powder, our own GARLIC POWDERS, regular and smoked, Blue Moon Farm SUNDAY TEA, with rosemary and lavender, CHAMPAGNE DRESSING made using Stanley Demos' recipe from the old Coach House Restaurant only with our garlic!  Great for salads, crudites, or as a dressing for cole slaw, potato salad, pasta salad etc.

From Stone Cross Farm in Spencer County we'll have all kinds of PORK products, great for grilling!  Assorted European SAUSAGES like Italian, Knockwurst (Hotdogs) or Chorizo, CHOPS, ROASTS, BACON.  We also carry their handmade SOAPS with wonderful scents like LAVENDER or PATCHOULI.

Colcord Farm in Bourbon County supplies us with GRASS FINISHED BEEF....GROUND BEEF  to STEAKS and ROASTS, and the steaks are still 30% off!  Think about your 4th of July celebrations!

Kenny Mattingly in Bracken County is our cheesemaker.  Kenny's Farmhouse Cheeses are famous all over the state in the finest restaurants!

Come on by and see all the delicious offerings we have for you!  Wednesdays (except July 4) behind Commonwealth Stadium 3-6PM, Saturdays behind the Lexington History Museum 7:30AM-2PM, Sundays in front of Goodyear on Southland Drive 10AM-2PM.

Keep in touch on Facebook www.facebook.com/bluemoongarlic or visit our website www.bluemoongarlic.com

GOOD SHEPHERD
Bath County

Lambing season is over here on the farm at Good Shepherd Cheese.  Our final total of lambs is 69.  35 ewe lambs and 34 ram lambs.  Our 51 momma ewes are back in the pasture now, spending their days munching on Orchard grass & Clover from our rich Kentucky soil here in the rolling hills in Bath County.  The orchard grass, clover & native flora all combine to give our sheep milk it's own distinctive flavor.  This flavor contributes a wonderful earthy, nutty and buttery taste to our Good Shepherd Cheese.

News Flash - Check out the June issue of Kentucky Monthly Magazine for a great article about Good Shepherd Cheese by Megan Smith.  Megan has done a wonderful job of capturing what life is like here on the farm.  She also lets her readers know just how we got into this crazy life of milking sheep and making cheese.

LA PETITE CREPERIE

Fayette County

La Petite Crêperie brings a little taste of France to the Bluegrass.

The idea for opening a walk-up crêperie was hatched many years ago when I was a student in France.   After discovering crêpes they became a staple of my diet because as a hot, quick meal they fit right in with the poor student budget.  The best part was that they were never far away. Walk-up crêpe windows are like hot dog stands in New York; they are everywhere.

My husband Mark and I took many more trips to France and ate countless more crêpes.  We decided that the good people of Lexington should be able enjoy them here.  After years of tweaking batters and looking for just the right griddle, and after serving hundreds of crêpes to our friends, family and my French students, we think we've hit on a good combination.

La Petite Crêperie hopes to recreate the experience of ordering a French crêpe à emporter.  Half of the fun is watching, smelling, and anticipating how delicious it's going to be.  Our batter contains only eggs from the market, Weisenberger white and wheat flours, Kentucky produced whole milk, water, canola oil, sugar and salt. Our sweet crêpe fillings include honey and jam from Farmers' Market vendors, and the butter and sugar crêpes are made with homemade butter from the market. We also make a hearty breakfast crêpe with market eggs, cheese and vegetables. Our menu will vary as other fruits, berries and vegetables come into season.

La Petite Crêperie will be open most Saturdays at Cheapside from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm. and most Sundays at Southland from 10:00 until 2:00.  You can visit our website, www.petitecreperie.com to find out exactly where we will be and when.  Bon appétit!

THE FAYETTE ALLIANCE

The Fayette Alliance is Lexington's ONLY land-use advocacy organization that regularly educates and lobbies local government for a sustainable growth model that benefits all of us.

We believe that preserving our signature Bluegrass landscape, creating a dynamic and equitable cityscape through infill redevelopment, and improving our natural waterways by fixing our sanitary sewer and stormwater systems are key components to achieving our economic and environmental promise here in Lexington-Fayette County.

We are an alliance of citizens from the entire community, including stakeholders from the agricultural, neighborhood, and infill sectors. We are a united voice for responsible growth, and only weigh-in on those land-use issues that have countywide implications. Together we can chart our future, and positively impact local zoning decisions-the very building blocks of our community.

WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.
