The Lexington Farmers' Market

June 20th, 2012

Happy Summer Solstice everyone!  Tonight at 7:09pm will mark the official start to summer and the longest day of the year filled with fresh summer sun.  Summer seems to brings a sense of nostalgia, lazy days, and late nights filled with good company, fresh food, and laughter.  If it is one thing we know here at the Market is the value of good, fresh, local food.  There is nothing in this world quite like that first bite into a freshly picked summer tomato or that first chomp into the sweet, crunchy summer corn.  Luckily for you all we have plenty of upcoming opportunities to get a taste of your favorite fresh summer produce.

Veggin' at the Pool is THIS Friday!  We would love to invited all our loyal market supporters to come out for a little swim and local food fun.  The event will be held at Southland Pool from 5:30pm- 7:30pm.  Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under and includes access to the pool and great local food.  Tickets are on sale now at every market, Good Foods Co-Op, and at Southland Pool on the day of the event.   We guarantee a pool splashin', local food fixin', good ole time!  Get your tickets today before they are all gone!

The annual First African Baptist Market will be held this Thursday, the 21st, from 4pm-7pm.  Come out to 465 Price Road to get all your favorite market goodies.  Can't make it on Thursday?

Come out to the UK market tonight from 3pm-6pm or, don't forget about our other great weekday markets, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7am-4pm on the corner of Maxwell and Broadway, and Food Cart located within the Government Building downtown from 11am-2pm every Thursday.

As always you can find us Saturdays at Cheapside Park from 7am-3pm. Follow us to Southland Drive on Sunday from 10am-2pm. Also remember that parking is FREE on Saturdays in the Financial Center garage across Main Street or anywhere on the streets in a designated spot.

Hope to see you at Market!

Try this salad from one of my all time favorite recipe sources, 101 Cookbooks. The title also couldn't be more appropriate.

Kale Market Salad

Ingredients:

Green Garlic Dressing:

  • 2 stalks green garlic (or scallions), rinsed and chopped (~1/4 cup)
  • 1/4 teaspoon fine grain sea salt, plus more to taste
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1/3 cup / 80 ml extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons ripe avocado
  • 1 teaspoon honey, or to taste
  • fresh pepper to taste

Salad:

  • 1/2 bunch kale, destemmed, torn into pieces
  • 1 cup / 5.5 oz cooked farro or wheat berries (semi-pearled or whole)
  • 4-5 farmers' market carrots, very thinly sliced
  • 1 small bulb of fennel, transparently sliced
  • 1 avocado, cut into small cubes
  • a big handful of almond slices, toasted
Directions
  1. Make the dressing by using a hand blender or food processor to puree the green garlic, salt, lemon juice, olive oil, avocado, honey, and pepper until smooth. Taste, and adjust with more salt, or honey, or lemon juice.
  2. Before you're ready to serve, combine the kale with about half of the dressing in a large bowl use your hands to work the dressing into the kale, softening up the kale a bit in the process.
  3. Add the farro, carrots, and fennel, more dressing, and a couple pinches of salt, and toss again.
  4. Taste, and add the last of the dressing if needed. This is a salad I like quite heavily dressed.
  5. Add the avocados and almonds and give one last gentle toss.

Serves 2-4.

Prep time: 10 min

 OLIVA BELLA
Fayette County

Balsamic is back! It decided it wanted to spend a few weeks in Italy (and who wouldn't), but the vacation is over and it's home at Oliva Bella where it belongs! Come visit us at the Saturday market and find out what our feature product of the week is. We started cooking last week featuring our Cipollini Agrodolce and I can still smell that amazing aroma... Don't miss your chance to taste our extra virgin olive oil, balsamic, and locally made sauces. You can also see who our chef of the week is... You never know who may stop by to cook up some great samples for us.

" nothing, something "
" and, he noticed you ? "
" well, I am the Queen Bee. Everyone buzzes around me. At the Lexington Farmers Market, there is always much activity: produce being unloaded, arranged and displayed for enticing attention. Cheeses and hand crafted foods and colorful people. There's so much going on all the time - no one is even aware, really, that they all are there to divert themselves with sensual pleasures. But, everything buzzes around me. He noticed. "
" and he spoke with you ? He stopped at your booth ? "
" no "

QUARLES DAYLILLIES AND FARM

Shelby County

Summer is starting with some higher temps and it's getting hot down on the farm.  Our daylilies are in full bloom and we're having open gardens for folks to have the opportunity to see and purchase plants from June 22 -July 22, Fridays and Sundays only from 10-5.  You can call us at

502-352-3790 for more information.

We got over 3 inches of rain this past weekend.  Maybe we didn't need that much but we'll take what we're given.  More vegetables are being planted and the onion crop will e harvested today and dried in the barn.  We should have Candy apples, both red and white available at all markets as well as some carrots, beets and Swiss chard.  People undervalue Swiss chard.  I personally think it tastes about as close to spinach as anything I've tasted.  Give it a try.  We'll have plenty.

We'll also have our coolers full of beef, lots of salsa, relish, jams and other canned items.  We'll also have our breads and cakes.  If you haven't tried our pumpkin chocolate chip bread, give it a try.  Warm it in the microwave until the chips are gooey and get your glass of milk.  Yum!

Check out our website at quarlesfarm.com or visit our Facebook page at  http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/Quarlesfarm    There's some pictures and videos of the cattle and the dogs.  Check out our all Angus ball team.   Too cute!

We're also harvesting BASIL for market.....Genovese, Thai and Lime, more of those beautiful ONIONS- sweets and keepers, and FRESH SHALLOTS.  We'll have a limited amount of KALE and PEA SHOOTS again this weekend and, of course our GARLIC POWDERS  and PEPPER POWDERS including some just ground CHIPOTLE.

GOOD SHEPHERD
Bath County

Lambing season is over here on the farm at Good Shepherd Cheese.  Our final total of lambs is 69.  35 ewe lambs and 34 ram lambs.  Our 51 momma ewes are back in the pasture now, spending their days munching on Orchard grass & Clover from our rich Kentucky soil here in the rolling hills in Bath County.  The orchard grass, clover & native flora all combine to give our sheep milk it's own distinctive flavor.  This flavor contributes a wonderful earthy, nutty and buttery taste to our Good Shepherd Cheese.

News Flash - Check out the June issue of Kentucky Monthly Magazine for a great article about Good Shepherd Cheese by Megan Smith.  Megan has done a wonderful job of capturing what life is like here on the farm.  She also lets her readers know just how we got into this crazy life of milking sheep and making cheese.

HILLSIDE HERITAGE FARM

Garrard County

Even though summer isn't officially here, our family calls it summer as soon as school is out! We're still busy - John is teaching a summer term, and Dorthy will begin teaching part-time in a summer program in June and July.  Clay has begun working part-time and is still seeking a teaching job in agriculture. Hannah is the only one who is somewhat free - if you don't count basketball practices and her farm chores.

It takes all of us as team to get everything accomplished in order to make it to the markets.  Our customers are definitely a part of our team, too.  If it wasn't for your loyalty, we wouldn't be successful.  Keep spreading the word about our delicious pork!

See you at the market!

LA PETITE CREPERIE

Fayette County

La Petite Crêperie brings a little taste of France to the Bluegrass.

The idea for opening a walk-up crêperie was hatched many years ago when I was a student in France.   After discovering crêpes they became a staple of my diet because as a hot, quick meal they fit right in with the poor student budget.  The best part was that they were never far away. Walk-up crêpe windows are like hot dog stands in New York; they are everywhere.

My husband Mark and I took many more trips to France and ate countless more crêpes.  We decided that the good people of Lexington should be able enjoy them here.  After years of tweaking batters and looking for just the right griddle, and after serving hundreds of crêpes to our friends, family and my French students, we think we've hit on a good combination.

La Petite Crêperie hopes to recreate the experience of ordering a French crêpe à emporter.  Half of the fun is watching, smelling, and anticipating how delicious it's going to be.  Our batter contains only eggs from the market, Weisenberger white and wheat flours, Kentucky produced whole milk, water, canola oil, sugar and salt. Our sweet crêpe fillings include honey and jam from Farmers' Market vendors, and the butter and sugar crêpes are made with homemade butter from the market. We also make a hearty breakfast crêpe with market eggs, cheese and vegetables. Our menu will vary as other fruits, berries and vegetables come into season.

La Petite Crêperie will be open most Saturdays at Cheapside from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm. and most Sundays at Southland from 10:00 until 2:00.  You can visit our website, www.petitecreperie.com to find out exactly where we will be and when.  Bon appétit!

GLEANING with Faith Feeds...

In 2011, Faith Feeds collected approximately 10,800 pounds of fresh food from our LFM members.  The food was donated to 14 emergency food agencies, faith ministries and others that feed the poor and hungry. In total, the volunteers of Faith Feeds have collected over 68,000 pounds of food in 2011. Add to this total the 37,500 pounds collected in 2010 and you have a grand total of 105,000 pounds of food!

Over forty volunteers give of their time and energy to make all this possible. Words cannot express the gratitude of the Faith Feed organizers.  Look for Faith Feeds at any of our given markets as they are hard at work harvesting for the hungry this summer!

If you are interested in participating in this unique ministry or you have a truck that you can make available from time to time, please contact Whitney at whitney@lexingtonfarmersmarket.com.

THE FAYETTE ALLIANCE

The Fayette Alliance is Lexington's ONLY land-use advocacy organization that regularly educates and lobbies local government for a sustainable growth model that benefits all of us.

We believe that preserving our signature Bluegrass landscape, creating a dynamic and equitable cityscape through infill redevelopment, and improving our natural waterways by fixing our sanitary sewer and stormwater systems are key components to achieving our economic and environmental promise here in Lexington-Fayette County.

We are an alliance of citizens from the entire community, including stakeholders from the agricultural, neighborhood, and infill sectors. We are a united voice for responsible growth, and only weigh-in on those land-use issues that have countywide implications. Together we can chart our future, and positively impact local zoning decisions-the very building blocks of our community.

WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.
