Do you preserve food at home and have been doing so for the last 20 years?  If so Principal Investigator, Lisa Conley, is looking for your help.  She will be conducting interviews in order to fulfill a PhD in Sociology requirement.  Interviews should last only a hour and a small gift will be given as compensation.  If interested please contact Lisa Conley at lisa.conley@uky.edu.  Your help is appreciated!

Come out tonight to the UK market from 3pm-6pm to get your fair share of fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses, eggs, breads, jams, and more! Don't forget about our other great weekday markets, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7am-4pm on the corner of Maxwell and Broadway, and Food Cart located within the Government Building downtown from 11am-2pm every Thursday.

Radish Salad

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound radishes (about 25), topped, tailed and cut into large bite-sized pieces.
  • Smal handful basil leaves
  • Flaky Sea Salt
  • 2 1/2-ounce chunk of Parmesan, cut into slices, some thick and some thin.
  • 2 tablespoons fresh squeezed lemon juice, or to taste
  • 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 small handfuls arugula or mixed mustard greens
Directions:
  1. Just before you serve, combine the radishes, basil and 3 healthy pinches of salt in a big bowl.
  2. Grab a handful of the mixture at a time and smoosh the basil and salt against the radishes for about 30 seconds to release the basil's aromatic oils.
  3. Add the cheese and do some more smooshing with the radishes until some of the cheese goes creamy, some is in little chunks and some is still in larger dime-sized chunks.
  4. Add lemon juice and olive oil and toss well. Add the greens and toss. Taste and add more salt and lemon juice, to taste

" Fair Trade, certified organic, hand-crafted and utterly delicious"

 - The Lexington Herald-Leader

I pulled off the road but left the engine running. The soft, nurturing hum from the car motor was the sole relaxing element in my life now. Slumped in the passenger seat next to me was the famous author - sound asleep and giving off a faint, pleasant aroma of honeybees.  My mission was to get her, quickly as I could, across the border and into Mexico where we could permanently exchange our identities and, with time, our appearances. The cheery, blonde author snoring softly beside me in this desolate midnight roadside would appreciate the irony (?) of becoming a character in one of her own famous mystery novels.  Oh, that this were a fiction!  I
n a few moments, we'd be back on the road and taking back roads all the way to Juarez.  I recall so many sunny Saturdays at the Lexington Farmers Market where the delighted citizenry, shopping bags bulging, scurried or ambled amongst the smiling vendors. And all seemed peaceful. But underneath the top heavy fraction welded to the pavilion siding, much malevolent mystery was afoot.

To be continued.

BLEUGRASS CHEVRE
Clark/Fayette County

We'll have cheeses galore, and sorbet will make a reappearance this weekend. We will be experimenting on Thursday, then making more batches on Friday, and this week we have been  talking about ... are you ready?  Middle Eastern flavors.  Rose water, orange water, saffron, cardamon, cinnamon, pistachio. Chief sorbet maker Elaine will be in the "laboratory" figuring out how to make these exotic flavors dairy free and if we don't have an offering this week, it will be forthcoming.  Keep in mind we always have gluten-free and dairy-free flavors, and we only use arrowroot for texture. There's usually one flavor made with fresh chèvre.

For sure, we'll have strawberry-rhubarb, pineapple with smoked paprika, mango-lime, all made with Abigail's honey and market strawberries and rhubarb.  (Not to worry, we have 20 quarts of frozen strawberries, but now we need to start gathering up peaches, blueberries and raspberries.)

See you at the market!

GOOD SHEPHERD
Bath County

Lambing season is over here on the farm at Good Shepherd Cheese.  Our final total of lambs is 69.  35 ewe lambs and 34 ram lambs.  Our 51 momma ewes are back in the pasture now, spending their days munching on Orchard grass & Clover from our rich Kentucky soil here in the rolling hills in Bath County.  The orchard grass, clover & native flora all combine to give our sheep milk it's own distinctive flavor.  This flavor contributes a wonderful earthy, nutty and buttery taste to our Good Shepherd Cheese.

News Flash - Check out the June issue of Kentucky Monthly Magazine for a great article about Good Shepherd Cheese by Megan Smith.  Megan has done a wonderful job of capturing what life is like here on the farm.  She also lets her readers know just how we got into this crazy life of milking sheep and making cheese.

HILLSIDE HERITAGE FARM

Garrard County

Even though summer isn't officially here, our family calls it summer as soon as school is out! We're still busy - John is teaching a summer term, and Dorthy will begin teaching part-time in a summer program in June and July.  Clay has begun working part-time and is still seeking a teaching job in agriculture. Hannah is the only one who is somewhat free - if you don't count basketball practices and her farm chores.

It takes all of us as team to get everything accomplished in order to make it to the markets.  Our customers are definitely a part of our team, too.  If it wasn't for your loyalty, we wouldn't be successful.  Keep spreading the word about our delicious pork!

See you at the market!

LA PETITE CREPERIE

Fayette County

La Petite Crêperie brings a little taste of France to the Bluegrass.

The idea for opening a walk-up crêperie was hatched many years ago when I was a student in France.   After discovering crêpes they became a staple of my diet because as a hot, quick meal they fit right in with the poor student budget.  The best part was that they were never far away. Walk-up crêpe windows are like hot dog stands in New York; they are everywhere.

My husband Mark and I took many more trips to France and ate countless more crêpes.  We decided that the good people of Lexington should be able enjoy them here.  After years of tweaking batters and looking for just the right griddle, and after serving hundreds of crêpes to our friends, family and my French students, we think we've hit on a good combination.

La Petite Crêperie hopes to recreate the experience of ordering a French crêpe à emporter.  Half of the fun is watching, smelling, and anticipating how delicious it's going to be.  Our batter contains only eggs from the market, Weisenberger white and wheat flours, Kentucky produced whole milk, water, canola oil, sugar and salt. Our sweet crêpe fillings include honey and jam from Farmers' Market vendors, and the butter and sugar crêpes are made with homemade butter from the market. We also make a hearty breakfast crêpe with market eggs, cheese and vegetables. Our menu will vary as other fruits, berries and vegetables come into season.

La Petite Crêperie will be open most Saturdays at Cheapside from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm. and most Sundays at Southland from 10:00 until 2:00.  You can visit our website, www.petitecreperie.com to find out exactly where we will be and when.  Bon appétit!

GLEANING with Faith Feeds...

In 2011, Faith Feeds collected approximately 10,800 pounds of fresh food from our LFM members.  The food was donated to 14 emergency food agencies, faith ministries and others that feed the poor and hungry. In total, the volunteers of Faith Feeds have collected over 68,000 pounds of food in 2011. Add to this total the 37,500 pounds collected in 2010 and you have a grand total of 105,000 pounds of food!

Over forty volunteers give of their time and energy to make all this possible. Words cannot express the gratitude of the Faith Feed organizers.  Look for Faith Feeds at any of our given markets as they are hard at work harvesting for the hungry this summer!

If you are interested in participating in this unique ministry or you have a truck that you can make available from time to time, please contact Whitney at whitney@lexingtonfarmersmarket.com.

THE FAYETTE ALLIANCE

The Fayette Alliance is Lexington's ONLY land-use advocacy organization that regularly educates and lobbies local government for a sustainable growth model that benefits all of us.

We believe that preserving our signature Bluegrass landscape, creating a dynamic and equitable cityscape through infill redevelopment, and improving our natural waterways by fixing our sanitary sewer and stormwater systems are key components to achieving our economic and environmental promise here in Lexington-Fayette County.

We are an alliance of citizens from the entire community, including stakeholders from the agricultural, neighborhood, and infill sectors. We are a united voice for responsible growth, and only weigh-in on those land-use issues that have countywide implications. Together we can chart our future, and positively impact local zoning decisions-the very building blocks of our community.

WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.
