The Lexington Farmers' Market

June 6th, 2012

MOOOOOOOOO! Despite the abrupt cow noise, we are not turning into Cows here at the Lexington Farmers' Market, we are just excited to support dairy month in Kentucky throughout June.  We support local economies here at the LFM and what better way to support dairy month then to buy direct from your local dairy farm.  Take the dairy month challenge and buy all your dairy items locally for the month of June (and beyond).  The LFM can help, with our wide selection of cheese, eggs, and milk.  For more information and upcoming events about dairy month check out the Governor's Office of Agriculture Policy website at: http://agpolicy.ky.gov/kcade/education.shtml.

Come out tonight to the UK market from 3pm-6pm to stock up on your dairy goods, and don't forget about our other great weekday markets. Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7am-4pm on the corner of Maxwell and Broadway and the newly open Food Cart located within the Government Building downtown from 11am-2pm.

As always you can find us Saturdays at Cheapside Park from 7am-3pm. Follow us to Southland Drive on Sunday from 10am-2pm. Also remember that parking is FREE on Saturdays in the Financial Center garage across Main Street or anywhere on the streets in a designated spot.

Hope to see you at Market!

HERE'S A BIT OF WHAT YOU'LL FIND AT THE MARKET THIS WEEK...

ABIGAIL'S

Fayette County

Nothing is sweeter than honey to eat other than a good book to read.  "Death By Bridle" the third in the Josiah Reynolds mystery series, is out.  Come by my booth and get a copy.

Abigail's is proud to be part of Natasha's "Farmers' Market Sunday Brunch" for honey.  If you are looking for a place to eat on Sunday, try downtown's Natasha's where they purchase from local farmers for you.   Support local businesses that purchase local.

HONEY

Have spring Clover and might have Black Locust Honey this Saturday.   Also have a dark Wildflower Honey from last fall.  This is a very robust and thick honey.  Put any honey that is showing signs of crystalizing on the dashboard of your car on a sunny day for 1 hour.

SOAP

Will have Supermoist, Honey Facial, Mint Julep, French Vanilla, Sierra Dusk,  Sahara,  Bee Pollen, Oatmeal Body Scrub and Seafoam.  Have recently made Aqua and Hyacinth plus Sandalwood and Orange Blossom.   Will be making more soap this week!!!!!

BALMS

Will have all my moisturizing balms as well as lip balms.  Helps to keep your skin fresh and smooth.

SOUTHLAND

I will NOT be at Southland this year.  If you just go to Southland Market and need something, email me before a Thursday atabigailshoney@windstream.net.  I will leave your needed items with a farmer going to Southland the next Sunday.

RECYCLING

I have decided to go green  as much as possible and use recycled bags and boxes.  They don't look as good but it helps the planet stay healthier.

BOOKS

I will have copies of my books at LFM.  Summer is a good time to read mysteries.

QUARLES DAYLILLIES AND FARM

Shelby County

Summer is bearing down on us and you can tell by the increase in food choices at the market.  It won't be too long and you'll be seeing local tomatoes, green beans and corn on the tables.  We'll have sugar snap peas probably one more week as well as Swiss chard and beets.  We're starting to pull carrots and may have some of the bigger onions on the tables this weekend.  Our coolers will be well stocked with a variety of beef cuts.  We have an extra large brisket available for anyone that needs to feed a large crowd.  Just give us a call and we'll make sure it's on the truck.

We continue to have a good selection of breads and cakes as well as other value added products.  You'll see some fine jams and jellies as well as salsas and relishes at our table.  Remember, we will also have ready to eat brats as well as jumbo hot dogs and BBQ made with our beef.  The BBQ is available by the sandwich.  We'll also have lemonade and sweet tea if you're thirsty.

Join us Wednesday afternoons at Commonwealth Stadium for a pleasant afternoon market.  It's a great way to break up the week and restock your supply of local food.

Check out our website at quarlesfarm.com or visit our Facebook page at  http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/Quarlesfarm. We post some of our favorite recipes from time to time and you'll find a few pictures of what's going on during the season.

BLUE MOON FARM***Sustainably Grown***
Madison County

A plea for help!  We use plastic half-gallon milk jugs, filled with water and frozen, to keep our produce fresh and cold in our coolers at the markets.  The manufacturers have started using a much lighter weight plastic for most of the jugs, so they aren't holding up for as long as they once did.  As a result, we are in great need of a bunch of these things!  If you use anything that comes in a 1/2 gallon plastic jug, and are putting the empties in your recycling bin, please consider bringing them to us at one of our markets.  We will use them over and over, until they split, and then we will recycle them....we promise!  Thanks so much!

For you early birds on Saturday, we'll have our first PEA SHOOTS of the year!  Very limited quantity, so if you've been waiting for them, early is the key!  LETTUCES, KALES, SPINACH, MIXED FRESH ONIONS, FRESH SHALLOTS, lots of FRESHLY HARVESTED GARLIC!!  FRESH CUT BASIL and CILANTRO!!
Garlic harvest is in full swing here, and life is as out-of-control as it gets!  Try not to poke fun at the exhausted farmers you'll find at our booth this week!  :-)  In addition to 3 markets a week, we're also making GARLIC SCAPE PESTO every chance we get.  If you've never tried a sample, please stop by at any market....we've always got it to taste and to take home for an easy pasta topping, seasoning for veggies, dip, or sandwich spread!  CHAMPAGNE DRESSING too, which makes a wonderful potato salad or coleslaw dressing as well as being great on your salad!

PASTURE RAISED PORK from Stone Cross Farm, GRASS FINISHED BEEF from Colcord Farm (and the STEAK SALE continues), KY MADE CHEESES from Kenny's Cheese, and lots of ARTISAN BREADS and PASTRIES from Sunrise Bakery, including the best GARLIC BAGELS in Lexington!  Keep up with last minute news on Facebook www.facebook.com/bluemoongarlic , special orders garlic@bluemoongarlic.com ,  and our website is www.bluemoongarlic.com

Come see us Wednesday 3-6PM behind Commonwealth Stadium, corner of Alumni and University; Saturday downtown behind the Lexington History Museum (old courthouse) on Short St., and Sunday on Southland Drive in front of Goodyear.

GOOD SHEPHERD
Bath County

Lambing season is over here on the farm at Good Shepherd Cheese.  Our final total of lambs is 69.  35 ewe lambs and 34 ram lambs.  Our 51 momma ewes are back in the pasture now, spending their days munching on Orchard grass & Clover from our rich Kentucky soil here in the rolling hills in Bath County.  The orchard grass, clover & native flora all combine to give our sheep milk it's own distinctive flavor.  This flavor contributes a wonderful earthy, nutty and buttery taste to our Good Shepherd Cheese.

News Flash - Check out the June issue of Kentucky Monthly Magazine for a great article about Good Shepherd Cheese by Megan Smith.  Megan has done a wonderful job of capturing what life is like here on the farm.  She also lets her readers know just how we got into this crazy life of milking sheep and making cheese.

HENKLE'S HERBS AND HEIRLOOMS

Jessamine County

If knowing the origin of what you consume is important to you, as it should be, then we are the folks to shop with.  EVERYTHING we offer is started from seed and grown by us just 15 miles away at our farm in Nicholasville.  We opt to use biological controls and to release beneficial insects like lacewings and lady beetles instead of spraying with pesticides that kill honey bees and other beneficial predators to create a pest management system that is friendly to the food we bring to market as well as the environment.  Look for us and our big box truck at the corner of Short and Upper on Saturday and at Southland Drive on Sunday.  All of our offerings are sustainably grown, Kentucky Proud, 100% homegrown, and pesticide free.

Check out what's new at the farm on our Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/pages/Henkles-Herbs-and-Heirlooms/209284635797660.  We look forward to seeing you at the market!

HILLSIDE HERITAGE FARM

Garrard County

Even though summer isn't officially here, our family calls it summer as soon as school is out! We're still busy - John is teaching a summer term, and Dorthy will begin teaching part-time in a summer program in June and July.  Clay has begun working part-time and is still seeking a teaching job in agriculture. Hannah is the only one who is somewhat free - if you don't count basketball practices and her farm chores.

It takes all of us as team to get everything accomplished in order to make it to the markets.  Our customers are definitely a part of our team, too.  If it wasn't for your loyalty, we wouldn't be successful.  Keep spreading the word about our delicious pork!

See you at the market!

Check out three of our cheeses that were recently in the World Cheese Championships.

-Kentucky Derby - A cheddar infused with Woodford Reserve to give this cheese a nice oaky finish.

-Sassy Redhead - An American style cheddar with whole peppercorns and red pepper flakes, then dusted with red paprika on the top to give it a distinctive "red head". Spicy, but not flaming hot, it leaves a nice glow in your mouth.

-Tuscan Sun - A taste of Italy with organic sun dried tomatoes and basil.

We also offer cheese making classes, supplies, and equipment. For details, call or visit our website. See you at the Market.

LA PETITE CREPERIE

Fayette County

La Petite Crêperie brings a little taste of France to the Bluegrass.

The idea for opening a walk-up crêperie was hatched many years ago when I was a student in France.   After discovering crêpes they became a staple of my diet because as a hot, quick meal they fit right in with the poor student budget.  The best part was that they were never far away. Walk-up crêpe windows are like hot dog stands in New York; they are everywhere.

My husband Mark and I took many more trips to France and ate countless more crêpes.  We decided that the good people of Lexington should be able enjoy them here.  After years of tweaking batters and looking for just the right griddle, and after serving hundreds of crêpes to our friends, family and my French students, we think we've hit on a good combination.

La Petite Crêperie hopes to recreate the experience of ordering a French crêpe à emporter.  Half of the fun is watching, smelling, and anticipating how delicious it's going to be.  Our batter contains only eggs from the market, Weisenberger white and wheat flours, Kentucky produced whole milk, water, canola oil, sugar and salt. Our sweet crêpe fillings include honey and jam from Farmers' Market vendors, and the butter and sugar crêpes are made with homemade butter from the market. We also make a hearty breakfast crêpe with market eggs, cheese and vegetables. Our menu will vary as other fruits, berries and vegetables come into season.

La Petite Crêperie will be open most Saturdays at Cheapside from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm. and most Sundays at Southland from 10:00 until 2:00.  You can visit our website, www.petitecreperie.com to find out exactly where we will be and when.  Bon appétit!

GLEANING with Faith Feeds...

In 2011, Faith Feeds collected approximately 10,800 pounds of fresh food from our LFM members.  The food was donated to 14 emergency food agencies, faith ministries and others that feed the poor and hungry. In total, the volunteers of Faith Feeds have collected over 68,000 pounds of food in 2011. Add to this total the 37,500 pounds collected in 2010 and you have a grand total of 105,000 pounds of food!

Over forty volunteers give of their time and energy to make all this possible. Words cannot express the gratitude of the Faith Feed organizers.  Look for Faith Feeds at any of our given markets as they are hard at work harvesting for the hungry this summer!

If you are interested in participating in this unique ministry or you have a truck that you can make available from time to time, please contact Whitney at whitney@lexingtonfarmersmarket.com.

VOLUNTEER WITH THE LFM!

Looking for a way to contribute to the local food movement in Lexington?  We are always in need of volunteers at our markets! Send an email to whitney@lexingtonfarmersmarket.com if you're interested!

PARKING is always FREE at all of our markets if you know where to look!

On Saturday it's as easy as parking for FREE on the street and we can validate tickets for the Victorian Square Garage. We appreciate your patronage, so support the LFM year round!

THE FAYETTE ALLIANCE

The Fayette Alliance is Lexington's ONLY land-use advocacy organization that regularly educates and lobbies local government for a sustainable growth model that benefits all of us.

We believe that preserving our signature Bluegrass landscape, creating a dynamic and equitable cityscape through infill redevelopment, and improving our natural waterways by fixing our sanitary sewer and stormwater systems are key components to achieving our economic and environmental promise here in Lexington-Fayette County.

We are an alliance of citizens from the entire community, including stakeholders from the agricultural, neighborhood, and infill sectors. We are a united voice for responsible growth, and only weigh-in on those land-use issues that have countywide implications. Together we can chart our future, and positively impact local zoning decisions-the very building blocks of our community.

If you want a better quality of life for all of us, please join The Fayette Alliance today for free.  Visit www.fayettealliance.com for more information.

WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.
