HERE'S A BIT OF WHAT YOU'LL FIND AT THE MARKET THIS WEEK...

ABIGAIL'S

Fayette County

It looks like the Locust Trees did not bloom long enough to make a large locust crop of honey but we still have three more hives to harvest, so they may hold the golden liquid.  We will be doing our major harvest in several weeks, so we might find some.  So far the fields are just covered with white clover which makes an excellent summer honey.

Parked my car in the drive way and saw a turkey hen with nine chicks just walking through.  I stayed in the car until they were well on their way into the woods.  I didn't want to frighten the chicks.  Also last night a raccoon ventured onto our back patio when a friend was enjoying the evening.   The raccoon likes to eat birdseed dropped by birds eating out the feeders.  When the friend decided this was too close of a nature encounter, he made a beeline for the backdoor with the furry critter skedaddling right behind him, hoping to come in too.

It's amazing what wildlife will hang around your house, when you don't mow everything and leave animal habitats.  If you have 10 acres or more, leave a large portion of your land unmowed so the wild animals can thrive.  Mowing everything in sight is considered bad land management any more even though it looks nice to you.

HONEY

Have spring Clover and might have Black Locust Honey this Saturday.   Also have a dark Wildflower Honey from last fall.  This is a very robust and thick honey.  Put any honey that is showing signs of crystalizing on the dashboard of your car on a sunny day for 1 hour.

QUARLES DAYLILLIES AND FARM

Shelby County

We'll be stocking the coolers with plenty of grilling meat for your Memorial Day festivities Saturday and Sunday.  We'll have cheese mettwurst, smoky mettwurst, cheese jalapeno mettwurst as well as plenty of steaks and burgers.  The T-bones we had for supper Sunday night were absolutely superb.  And since we eat the from the same food that we bring to market for you, I have no doubt that the steaks that you get from us will be just as tasty.

We'll have some sugar snap peas to go along with your grilled items.  Put them in some foil and cook them over the grill.  Fresh and tasty as food was meant to be.  We'll also have some beets, Swiss chard and a bit of spinach and lettuce.  The breads table will be full with plenty of goodies to finish off your celebration and our salsas, and other canned goods can fill in the gaps.  Try our green tomato relish or zucchini relish on a hamburger or hot dog.  I think you'll like it!

Check out our website at quarlesfarm.com or visit our Facebook page at  http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/Quarlesfarm    We post some of our favorite recipes from time to time and you'll find a few pictures of what's going on during the season.

HILLSIDE HERITAGE FARM

Garrard County

The Hillside Heritage Farm family is looking forward to our first Wednesday market today!  The truck is ready to roll with a full stock of our ASH-free, locally grown, pasture-raised pork.

Even though summer isn't officially here, our family calls it summer as soon as school is out! We're still busy - John is teaching a summer term, and Dorthy will begin teaching part-time in a summer program in June and July.  Clay has begun working part-time and is still seeking a teaching job in agriculture. Hannah is the only one who is somewhat free - if you don't count basketball practices and her farm chores.

It takes all of us as team to get everything accomplished in order to make it to the markets.  Our customers are definitely a part of our team, too.  If it wasn't for your loyalty, we wouldn't be successful.  Keep spreading the word about our delicious pork!

See you at the market!

BLEUGRASS CHEVRE
Fayette/ Clark County

It's a holiday weekend and the official beginning of cookout season, so celebrate with our creamy goat cheese medallions smothered in jalapeo pepper jelly.  And a forecast of 92 degrees for Saturday means something cool will hit the spot ... sorbet, of course, so come by for a scoop!  We'll always have at least one dairy-free flavor, everything is gluten-free, and we only use arrowroot for texture - none of those gummy additives.   We'll have strawberry-rhubarb (with fruit from the market) and pineapple with bourbon smoked paprika and Abigail's honey (you won't believe this one!), plus chocolate with chvre and most likely coffee with Marco's java.

Cheers,

HENKLE'S HERBS AND HEIRLOOMS

Jessamine County

If knowing the origin of what you consume is important to you, as it should be, then we are the folks to shop with. EVERYTHING we offer is started from seed and grown by us just 15 miles away at our farm in Nicholasville. We opt to use biological controls and to release beneficial insects like lacewings and lady beetles instead of spraying with pesticides that kill honey bees and other beneficial predators to create a pest management system that is friendly to the food we bring to market as well as the environment.

Look for us and our big box truck at the corner of Short and Upper on Saturday and at Southland Drive on Sunday.  All of our offerings are sustainably grown, Kentucky Proud, 100% homegrown, and pesticide free.

We look forward to seeing you at the market!

Check out three of our cheeses that were recently in the World Cheese Championships.

-Kentucky Derby - A cheddar infused with Woodford Reserve to give this cheese a nice oaky finish.

-Sassy Redhead - An American style cheddar with whole peppercorns and red pepper flakes, then dusted with red paprika on the top to give it a distinctive "red head". Spicy, but not flaming hot, it leaves a nice glow in your mouth.

LA PETITE CREPERIE

Fayette County

La Petite Crperie brings a little taste of France to the Bluegrass.

The idea for opening a walk-up crperie was hatched many years ago when I was a student in France.   After discovering crpes they became a staple of my diet because as a hot, quick meal they fit right in with the poor student budget.    The best part was that they were never far away.   Walk-up crpe windows are like hot dog stands in New York; they are everywhere.

My husband Mark and I took many more trips to France and ate countless more crpes.  We decided that the good people of Lexington should be able enjoy them here.   After years of tweaking batters and looking for just the right griddle, and after serving hundreds of crpes to our friends, family and my French students, we think we've hit on a good combination.

La Petite Crperie hopes to recreate the experience of ordering a French crpe emporter.  Half of the fun is watching, smelling, and anticipating how delicious it's going to be.  Our batter contains only eggs from the market, Weisenberger white and wheat flours, Kentucky produced whole milk, water, canola oil, sugar and salt. Our sweet crpe fillings include honey and jam from Farmers' Market vendors, and the butter and sugar crpes are made with homemade butter from the market.   We also make a hearty breakfast crpe with market eggs, cheese and vegetables.   Our menu will vary as other fruits, berries and vegetables come into season.

La Petite Crperie will be open most Saturdays at Cheapside from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm. and most Sundays at Southland from 10:00 until 2:00.  You can visit our website, www.petitecreperie.com to find out exactly where we will be and when.  Bon apptit!

GLEANING with Faith Feeds...

In 2011, Faith Feeds collected approximately 10,800 pounds of fresh food from our LFM members.  The food was donated to 14 emergency food agencies, faith ministries and others that feed the poor and hungry. In total, the volunteers of Faith Feeds have collected over 68,000 pounds of food in 2011. Add to this total the 37,500 pounds collected in 2010 and you have a grand total of 105,000 pounds of food!

Over forty volunteers give of their time and energy to make all this possible. Words cannot express the gratitude of the Faith Feed organizers.  Look for Faith Feeds at any of our given markets as they are hard at work harvesting for the hungry this summer!

If you are interested in participating in this unique ministry or you have a truck that you can make available from time to time, please contact Alexa at [email protected].

THE FAYETTE ALLIANCE

The Fayette Alliance is Lexington's ONLY land-use advocacy organization that regularly educates and lobbies local government for a sustainable growth model that benefits all of us.

We believe that preserving our signature Bluegrass landscape, creating a dynamic and equitable cityscape through infill redevelopment, and improving our natural waterways by fixing our sanitary sewer and stormwater systems are key components to achieving our economic and environmental promise here in Lexington-Fayette County.

We are an alliance of citizens from the entire community, including stakeholders from the agricultural, neighborhood, and infill sectors. We are a united voice for responsible growth, and only weigh-in on those land-use issues that have countywide implications. Together we can chart our future, and positively impact local zoning decisions-the very building blocks of our community.

If you want a better quality of life for all of us, please join The Fayette Alliance today for free.  Visit www.fayettealliance.com for more information.

WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.
